Edition 2 February 2012

Storey Arms
Welcome to the second edition of our school newsletter. This half term has been an extremely busy one, with concerts, trips, extra-curricular activities and of course our annual Sports festival. Glantaf News will be published every half term to keep you up to date about the exciting events here at Glantaf. If you would like to contribute to the newsletter please e-mail mp@glantaf.cardiff.sch.uk.
After eating so much over Christmas, a group of year 9 and 10 pupils went for a week of adventure to the Storey Arms Centre in the Brecon Beacons. Despite the wind and the rain we enjoyed four fantastic days jam packed with activities day and night. Activities such as, caving, night time walking, gorge walking, waterfall walking, canoeing and following ropes through the forest in the darkness. The highlight of the trip much to everyones amusement was when Herr Evans got wedged between two rocks in a claustrophobic cave, with a lot of pulling and pushing, the instructor eventually managed to get him out! This was a great start to the New Year and I highly recommend booking your place early for next year. By Anna Lawson (Year 10)

Sports Festival
Our annual Sports festival was held during the last week of the Autumn term. As the Sports facilities have vastly improved at Glantaf we decided to hold the festival at school instead of at Sophia Gardens. On Friday Dec 13th years 7, 8 and the Sixth Form enjoyed a day of competing in a variety of sports such as football, netball, basketball, hockey, table tennis, rowing and badminton. Unfortunately, due to poor weather conditions, the rugby was forced to be cancelled. It was the turn of years 9,10 and 11 on the Wednesday. Hundreds of pupils enjoyed the competing and taking part to try and earn as many points for their house as they could. Despite the weather, once again this years Sports Festival proved a roaring success. Dewi won the day with Teilo a close second, Illtud and Dyfrig finished 3rd and 4th respectively. Well done to all that took part! A huge thank you to all the staff who made this day run so smoothly.

Hockey
Glantaf first team recently had the unique opportunity to play against a team from Argentina. With a well-taken short corner, the team from Buenos Aires opened the scoring early in the first half. Glantaf fought back hard, with excellent individual skill from Alys Smith who weaved her way through the Argentinian defence to pass the ball to captain Amie Fletcher who neatly slotted the ball over the line making the half time score 1-1. As a result of Amies inspirational team talk at half time the girls came out fighting in the second half. Alys Smith and Lara Durrani scored a goal a piece to put Glantaf comfortably in front. The final score was Glantaf 3, Andrew Scott School 1. An outstanding individual performance by Catherine Hughes in defence won her the man of the match award. Well done to everyone who took part. Congratulations to Alys Smith and Elinor Mahoney who have been selected to take part in trials for the Welsh under 18 hockey team.

February 2012

Thank You Glantaf!

Head to Heart would like to thank Ysgol Glantaf for helping us to raise a huge sum of money for the Childrens Heart Unit for Wales and the Neurosciences Specialist Rehabilitation Unit in Wales. With the help of Glantaf pupils, parents, teachers, families and friends we have managed to raise over 35,000 an amazing amount! This money will go far to improve the quality of life for many young people throughout Wales. Not only have we raised a huge amount of money, but also we have had great fun doing so. The sponsored fun run and fancy dress in October was brilliant and approximately 15,000 was raised from this event alone. Thank you to everyone who made this day a great success. Another major event was the Gala Evening. Many talented people generously gave up their time to entertain us and join us for an evening of fun and celebration. This event enabled us to bring together the school community and the medical teams; who have both been so supportive of our families. The Gala was a fitting tribute to the hard work and dedication of the medical units and also to the bravery shown by Rory and Alaw and others alike. Throughout the year, many of you have organized events to help us raise money. To raise awareness of our charity the 6th form rugby teams, coached by Blues stars Xavier Rush and Paul Tito played in a charity match, which was refereed by none other than international referee Nigel Owens. Some of you have busked, donated signed football shirts, made and sold cakes, run marathons, played gigs amongst many others. The year ended with a beautiful carol concert, which raised almost 500. We will never forget the past year or the support that you at Ysgol Glantaf have given our families and us. We are very proud to be part of Ysgol Glantaf. Thank you from Cian, Osian, Rory, Alaw and families.
