Strand Episode Three "Shiver" By Amanda Cole

INT. LIVING ROOM-DAY Dara hurries into the living room, beads of sweat on her upper lip, wild look in her eye, holding Jamess shoes and a kitchen knife. She shoves them into a bag. Rae sits up quick, thumb still in mouth. Dara looks at her and laughs a little insanely. DARA Dont worry about any of this. Your dad said I could take some stuff... Dara grabs a small, ornate, useless hand mirror and holds it up, looking at her reflection in surprise. She shoves it in her pants, then grabs a radio off the table, turns and scans the room with savage movements. She locks eyes on Rae, then lunges. Dara rips a filthy coverlet off the couch beneath Rae and Rae falls off the couch. Dara tears out of the room, back out through the bedroom door. Rae leans forward and peaks after her. Silence. She turns and peers through the kitchen door. She sees her dads unmoving legs laying on the floor. INT. KITCHEN-DAY Rae kneels down next to her dad, thumb still in mouth. She shakes him. James doesnt move. Rae crawls over James lifeless body and peers down into his face. She turns his head towards her and sees a fresh bloody dent in his forehead. She pats his face lightly. No response. She smacks him harder. Nothing, She sighs, lays down next to him and closes her eyes. INT. KITCHEN-LATE DAY Late day light comes in through the window. James groans and sits up. Rae, asleep, falls off onto the floor. She wakes with a thud, sits up, a sore look on her face.

James stands up, dizzy. He walks to the sink filled with the dirty crusty dishes, reaches for the tap, then remembers, pulls his hand away. James walks intoINT. LIVING ROOM-LATE DAY -then walks through, intoINT. BEDROOM-LATE DAY -where he wobbles, registering Marthas dead body on the bed. Flies linger around now thickened, crusted neck wound. James folds the dirty plastic sheet over Marthas lifeless body, blood pooled inside the plastic beneath her. He looks back. Rae lingers in the shadows of the doorway, standing in socked feet. James drops his head into a hand. James turns and scoops up Rae. He hoists her over Marthas dead body. As she passes over, Rae looks down at Marthas lifeless face, her blue-ish pallor and dull eyes. James shoves Rae out the window. EXT. INDUSTRIAL BACK STREET-EARLY EVENING James walks ahead as Rae trails behind. Darkness ricochets off abandoned warehouses looming overhead. Rae kicks a rock and glares at her father. James looks back. JAMES Dont glare at me like that. Rae looks down, shivering.

Rae looks up and around. James looks back at her. JAMES Youre shivering... and what are you looking at? James looks around, suspicious. EXT. HIGH ABOVE WAREHOUSES-EARLY EVENING The Orb hovers high above, waiting, watching, shifting from side to side. EXT. INDUSTRIAL BACK STREET-EARLY EVENING James spots something to the side of the road, and dashes off. JAMES Stay there. A few DEAD BODIES lay in dead brush among abandoned allies. James starts to undress himself, peeling off his bloody clothes. He yanks off a boot, loses his balance, and sits down hard. JAMES Stay there, Rae. Dont come over here. He gets up and looks over at a young woman dead in the weeds. He kneels down, starts to unhook the buckles of her coat. EXT. {FLASHBACK} OUT DOOR CAFE-DAY James takes a nip out of his pocket and pours the contents out into his glass. Other FOLKS sit around outdoor tables with Oracles hovering above. JAMES I created all... this. Carolyn sits back and surveys him, a little bored.

CAROLYN Oh, all of this? Rae takes a silver ball out of her pocket and whispers something into it. It ignites into a glowing black orb. She tosses it up into the air. James snatches it out of the air and raises it to his lips. JAMES Off. CAROLYN James. JAMES No Oracles at the table. CAROLYN James, give Rover back. Rae tugs on his arm. JAMES I dont like what were teaching her. I need a break. CAROLYN Shes just doing what every other kid is doing, every other human being. JAMES Shes not every other kid, shes my kid. CAROLYN I love how it always somehow goes back to you. Dont listen to him Rae, hes just a bitter old fart. JAMES Put it away. Rae takes her Oracle back and slips it in her pocket, shrugs and goes back to sipping her drink. CAROLYN He used to be quite sharp. Under the table, Carolyn and Rae intertwine matching white, high heeled boots.

EXT. INDUSTRIAL BACK STREET-DAY Rae finds some small heeled shoes on the street and puts them on her feet. James hurries over with a black coat and drapes it around Raes shaking shoulder. It drags on the ground. She looks down at the hem line scraping the ground. JAMES Take those off. James picks her up and rips the heels off her feet. Rae kicks and thrashes. He puts her down. Energy swirls around Rae like a small tornado. JAMES Rae... keep it inside! Rae disappears inside a swirling mass of energy. JAMES Fine, if you want it that way, youre on your own! James turns and walks. EXT. INDUSTRIAL BACK STREET, FURTHER DOWN-DAY James slows down, curses beneath his breath. He turns and walks back. EXT. INDUSTRIAL BACK STREET-DAY James looks around. JAMES Rae! No response. He looks about again. JAMES RAE! Again, nothing. He runs down the road, looking this way and that.
