FIX: Unable to Install .NET Frameworks 4.

0 on Windows 7
Posted by Shyam Sasindran, MVP on February 15th, 2011 You might encounter different of error codes while trying to install .NET Frameworks 4.0. Most of the times it comes with the Windows update sometime it comes with a Program your trying to install. Here I would suggest few steps to resolve such issues. 1, Fixing MSI software update registration corruption issues: Sometime the software update registration might causes issues in applying update from Windows Update. Microsoft has a Microsoft Fixit tool that would resolve such issues. To fix this problem automatically, click the Fix it button or link. Click Run in the File Download dialog box, and then follow the steps in the Fix it wizard. Click the image to download.

2, Run the System Update Readiness Tool: System update readiness tool would check System resources, such as file data, registry data, and even in-memory data, can develop inconsistencies during the lifetime of the operating system would try to resolve it. Download for x86-based versions : Download the update package now. Download for x64-based versions : Download the update package now. 3, Run .NET Cleanup Tool for .NET Frameworks 4.0: Yes I know there is no .NET Frameworks installed on PC but the failed install would have some left over files. Most of the time these left over files would create problems when you try to reinstall the Frameworks. So by running this tool will make sure it would remove all the left over files. Download: NET Cleanup Tool.zip 4, Run System File Checker: The SFC /SCANNOW command (System File Checker) scans the integrity of all protected Windows 7 system files and replaces incorrect corrupted, changed, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible.
1. Click on Start and under search type in CMD 2. Right Click on CMD and Run as administrator 3. Then type in SFC /SCANNOW

If all these steps failed then the best option is to do a Repair Install

I'm hoping to avoid having to manually uninstall all the .NET stuff. I did it a while back and remember it was pretty tedious. Any help?

I note these are all Net Framework Updates, did you ever install the originals which you can do from "Optional Software" at the Windows Update site?

All of the above were done "Manually", by going directly to the MS website. __________________

download the dotnetfix cleanup tool. Uninstall all versions of .NET and restart the computer then download them all again in the proper order through Windows Update.

Thanks spunk.funk for the suggestion. I had to run the tool several times before it did the trick. There was some weird problem with .NET 3.5. I'd run the tool, go to Windows Update, 3.5 would fail, I'd run the tool again, etc... Several iterations of this before I finally decided to stop running the "Uninstall All" option, and selectively pick only .NET 3.5. Windows Update fully installed all the other .NET versions (including 4.0), then when I uninstalled 3.5 for the last time, and went to Windows Upate (yet again) it didn't even WANT to install 3.5. I'm wondering if I didn't have a duplicate install that needed to be uninstalled more than once, or if 4.0 supercedes 3.5 in some way making it unnecessary. Posted all of that in case someone else is in the same situation. It failed the first 2 or 3 times, but I kept after it and eventually it wound up getting fixed. Not sure how, but at least it's fixed. Thanks again. __________________

Hi Rich, Thank you for your post. Based on your description, it seems that .NET Framework 4.0 could not be installed successfully during VWD 2010 installation. Thus, I would suggest you to try installing .NET Framework 4.0 separately from VWD 2010 installation. To install .NET Framework 4.0, you could try the following steps for further troubleshooting. 1. Download .NET Framework 4.0 Standalone installer Note: You can try some download manager software to help downloading. 2. Use Cleanup tool to clear the failed installation of .NET Framework 4.0 3. Run the installer to install .NET 4.0 with Administrator Privilege Note: Right-click the installer >> "Run as Administrator"

4. If any problem occurs during the installation, use Collect tool to collect the log files for further troubleshooting. The steps to collect the log: - Try to clean your "%temp%" folder (Start Menu >> Run >> Type "%temp%") - Install .NET Framework 4.0 Standalone installer - Collect the logs from "%temp%" folder Collect tool: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
