SCIENCE UNIT Stage One

WEEK 1

Learning Activities
Place a variety of toys out the front of the room. Generate a class description of what is a toy and record it in their workbooks Ask some children to come out the front and groups their toys into different categories and explain the categories that they have chosen. Place a few about five toys on each groups desk and ask the children to separate the toys into two categories and write in their books the explanation of the categories they have chosen and include pictures. Discuss the difference between rolling and sliding and complete first page of booklet Demonstrate that it is easier to roll heavy objects than to slide them Complete experiment on second page of the booklet and get children to record the result on the data page

Resources
Variety of different toys Slide and roll page

Eval

2 cardboard boxes, 1 small, 1 large 1 m of string 1 packet of drinking straws Several marbles of different weights 6 wooden blocks

Discuss and list how many times a day you push and pull eg. Lifting, throwing and writing.

Write this in books: We make things move by pushing and pulling them. We force them to move Create a class definition of the word force and write in books Play a drama game where children act out force movements and children guess what they are doing Children make a friendly frog Discuss and demonstrate why things fall. What pushes them down?

Workbooks Coloured paper Friendly frog task card

Introduce the concept of gravity throw a ball into the air), discuss and define gravity at a class level and record into their books, gravity is the invisible pull on the earth Some things push against gravity to fly, the shape of objects depends how much more gravitational force acts upon them, heavier things drop quicker Demonstrate items dropping from a desk Make paper aeroplanes and discuss what works better Explain that heat is caused by resistance when two things rub together, rub hands together to demonstrate If a car stops suddenly the tyre become very hot because theres more resistance Friction page Explain that different surfaces offer different levels of resistance Build a wind vehicle and try on different surfaces Complete sheet in books

Workbook Items for gravity demonstration

Friction page in workbooks

Experiment page in books Box with a small hole at one end Balloons Straws Sticky tape

Revise the meaning of force Introduce magnets through play how can we use them?

Write a description of magnetism in their books the force created by the attraction of electrically charged materials. Demonstrate how magnetic force can attract (pull) or repel (push) Record data on worksheet Create and enact the experiment on the same page for children to see

10

Explain that the pulley is a load lifting mechanism eg. Fishing rod It works by changing the direction of the force applied to the load Demo the pulley in Gizmo gears on the white board Discuss how the pulley makes lifting easier Discuss everyday pulleys Write a description of a pulley and record in their workbooks Complete pulley sheet Introduce the lever and explain its use Define parts of the lever, the arm and the fulcrum Draw a picture of the lever in their workbooks and write an explanation of what it can do Discuss everyday levers Lever page in books Have a variety of toys out the front Complete the two pages on toys Free play with toys if time revising key concepts

Magnetism page in books A variety of magnets Magnetic Georello kit Magnet page Strong cardboard Strong magnet Small metal ball Marking pen scissors Gizmo gears Workbook Pulley sheet in workbooks

Materials to demonstrate a lever Workbooks Lever sheet
