Kohler Civic Club to seek Village Board approval of veterans memorial

Hopes to kick off fundraising campaign immediately if granted approval
The Kohler Civic Club will go before the Village Board to seek approval to begin construction of a veterans memorial in the Kohler cemetery. Club members hope the memorial will be completed in time for the 2012 Memorial Day commemoration. The site will be located where the United States flag currently flies, and where the annual Memorial Day ceremonies are held. Plans include replacement of the flag pole, which will be surrounded by a circular design formed by decorative paver stones. Within the paver circle will be granite monuments representing all the branches of the armed forces, as well as granite benches placed around the circle. The public will be offered a chance to purchase paver stones, which will be engraved with the names of men and women who served our country. Corporate donors will also be recognized at the site. The cost of the project is estimated to be approximately $140,000. The project will first go before the Cemetery Committee and possibly the Plan Commission. Upon approval, the Civic Club hopes the project will go before the Village Board for consideration at its meeting in either September or October, so construction work can begin as soon as possible in the fall, and continue in the spring with completion in time for the 2012 Memorial Day ceremony. All Village Board meetings are open to the public, and residents interested in hearing more about the memorial are encouraged to check the September and October agendas to determine the date and time when the presentation will be given to the board. Look for more information in future issues of The Kohler Villager. To learn more about the Kohler Civic Club, contact President Rich Balge, 920694-1918.

Kohler student to hold walk-a-thon to earn Scout award

Kohler High School senior Melyssa Louwagie will be completing her Girl Scout Gold Award by holding a walk-a-thon at the Kohler High School track called Walk a Mile Without Shoes. Every day, in countries across the world, people have no choice but to walk wherever they need to go. It is essential that they have shoes to protect them from injury, disease, and, in some cases, to allow them to attend school. Sadly, in many third world countries, such as Haiti, many people cannot afford to buy shoes. This walk gives you a chance to change that. Participants are invited to come with a new pair of shoes to donate to needy families in Leogane, Haiti. Then, if youre able, see what its like to be a Haitian for a little while: Walk a Mile Without Shoes. The first annual event will take place Saturday, October 1, 2011 at the high school track located at Ebben Field in Kohler. Sign-in will begin at 8:15 a.m. Pairs of shoes will be collected at the event, during sign-in. Only new pairs of shoes can be accepted, preferably still in the box or with tags still at-

Participants are encouraged to walk without their shoes, but it is not required. Snacks and water will be provided. All of the shoes will be sent to Mission E4, an American based mission in Haiti. The mission is located in the city of Leogane, the epicenter of the infamous earthquake that ripped through Haiti in 2010. Mission E4 runs several

schools, a girls orphanage, and a one-room store in Leogane and its surrounding villages. The shoes will be distributed to the village schoolchildren and their families, and given to the little girls living at the orphanage. Any remaining shoes will be sold at their store, which sells goods to missionaries in the area and helps to fund the orphanage. For a registration form, email cherilouwagie@gmail.com.

Kohler resident turns passion for snowshoeing, hiking into new business
By Mary Struck Tim White of Kohler wanted to spread his passion for snowshoeing and hiking by offering expert advice and quality products, so in January, 2011 he launched Snowshoe Gear. From Whites home business at 565 E. Riverside Drive in Kohler, he provides premium snowshoe and hiking equipment, sales and rentals, and professional advice. His line of products includes snowshoes by Northern Lites, Dion, and Black Diamond, as well as Black Diamond trekking poles, LED headlamps and lanterns, gaiters, and more. Products can also be purchased online at www.snowshoegear.com. White pre-tests the equipment to make sure its of the highest quality, sometimes enlisting his wife, Monica, as the couple go snowshoeing together while pulling their two little girls, Molly, age 3, and one-year-old Madison on a sled. All the snowshoes sold by Snowshoe Gear are made in the USA by hand, and come with lifetime warranties. White says his quality snowshoes should be the last pair you'll ever have to buy. Snowshoes are not just for walking, either. Sometimes White heads to his favorite trails where he straps on his snowshoes and goes for a run to train for snowshoe races. (His product line includes some of the lightest snowshoes in the world, and have superior bindings and traction). When Whites favorite season (winter) is over, he takes to the hiking trails to test his trekking poles. At 9.5 ounces, theyre light enough to run with. Working long hours at Kohler Co. as a senior staff engineer and raising two young daughters doesnt leave him a lot of daylight for exercising, so he often straps on one of his LED headlamps to test while going on a night jog. Those who are passionate about snowshoeing realize the importance of preserving the outdoors, so White promises to pledge ten percent of all profits from the equipment sales to foundations that support environmental preservation or the sport of snowshoeing. He has also organized a Snowshoe Basics clinic for this upcoming December at Maywood Environmental Park, and plans to help with a candlelight snowshoe hike at Maywood, tentatively set for January, where rentals will be available. White offered me a chance to give his snowshoes a try this winter. As one who likes to walk outdoors all winter, but often find myself limited by the hazards of ice-covered sidewalks, I just might take him up on that offer. Experienced snowshoe enthusiasts and interested beginners are invited to visit snowshoegear.com or call 920-547-4500.

Elizabeth Zurich, DO joins Sheboygan Internal Medicine Associates

Dr. Elizabeth L. Zurich is the newest physician to join the independent group of primary care medical providers of Sheboygan Internal Medicine Associates. Zurich comes to the area from the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago where she was a hospitalist. She is currently welcoming new patients. Dr. Zurich earned an undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia where she majored in biology. She then earned a Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in Downers Grove, Illinois. Dr. Zurich is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Patients accustomed to seeing a MD designation with a physicians name may wonder about the DO designation for Dr. Zurich. Both a DO, doctor of osteopathy, and MD, medical doctor, have similar education, training, and pass rigorous testing to obtain a medical license. A DO Dr. Elizabeth L. Zurich has received additional training in the muscular and skeletal system. Immediately after earning her doctorate, Dr. Zurich began a three-year residency at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. She followed that in the hospitalist position when she specialized in the care of patients in the hospital allowing her to see a broad range of health concerns. My husband and I have family in the area so its great to be here, says Dr. Zurich. The diversity of age range in the patients at Sheboygan Internal Medicine allows me to best utilize my education and prior experience. Sheboygan Internal Medicine Associates is an independent group of four primary care physicians and five nurse practitioners. Their offices are located in the Medical Arts Building at 2920 Superior Avenue. They welcome patients from young adult through seniors and address all health care needs ranging from general physical exams through continued care for chronic conditions and also offer same day urgent care. Their state certified onsite lab and x-ray department allow blood work, tests, and x-rays to be done onsite with immediate results available to the medical staff. Plymouth Foam accepts recycled styrofoam

Submitted by guest contributer Thomas McCann You have just set up your brand new flat screen and are cleaning up. The cardboard box gets broken down to be recycled at the curb. But what about that big pile of styrofoam? Unfortunately, the Village of Kohler does not offer styrofoam recycling. Also known as expanded polystyrene foam, styrofoam usually ends up in landfills, where it makes up an estimated that 30 percent of the total solid waste volume. Polystyrene takes an incredibly long time to break down in the environment, may be eaten be animals resulting in death, or may end up in the ocean. There is actually an area of the north Pacific ocean called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, where for every pound of plankton found, there is an estimated 6 pounds of plastic garbage. So what is a person to do? Well, when we lived in Detroit there was a local drop off station. Last year on a return visit to Michigan I brought a SUV full that I had accumulated. This year I was looking for a more convenient solution when I found Plymouth Foam, Inc. Plymouth Foam manufactures rigid and soft foam products for building insulation and protective packaging applications. But, better yet, they accept styrofoam! Located at 1800 Sunset Drive in Plymouth, they accept drop off of styrofoam at shipping and receiving from 7 a.m. - 11 p.m. The only styrofoam they do not accept is food containers such as leftovers, meat, or eggs. To get there take Highway 23 west toward Elkhart Lake. Exit north on County Road C and you will see the shipping and receiving on your right.

A golden era for Kohler High School athletics: 1969 through 1972
By Kevin Struck Thanks to Ron Hummitzsch for providing articles and photos. While there have been several periods of excellence for the Kohler High School athletics down through the years, there are few, if any, that can rival the achievements of the boys teams, individuals, and their coaches of the period beginning in the spring of 1969 and ending in the spring of 1972. For those not familiar with the history of Kohler High School, it can be surprising to learn of Kohlers dominance at the conference level and its acclaim statewide. Although it was a small school then, as it is now, and almost always found itself up against larger schools, Kohlers best teams invariably prevailed. The glorious run began when the 1969 Track Team, coached by the legendary Glenn Funk, finished second at the state Class C track meet in Monona Gove, June 6-7. In the process, members of the team set two state records. The 1969 edition of Kohlers 880-yard relay team, featuring Ken Dankwardt, Tom Gordon, Rich Hummitzsch, and Steve Ehren, made it an astonishing five state titles in a row with their victory, running a record 1:32.4. Not satisfied with one state record, Tom Gordon also became the best long-jumper in Class C history, leaping 22 2 . (Gordon had set the Class C state record in the low hurdles the previous spring.) In the summer of 1969 the Chicago Cubs were blowing a large lead to the New York Mets perhaps they could have used the pitching of Kohlers Mike Ehren. Although just a freshman and competing in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference against the likes of Plymouth and New Holstein, Ehren fired two no-hitters during the season. Older brother Steve Ehren and Randy Shaw were allconference caliber players on coach Ted Frostmans team. In the fall 1969, with the onset of football, Kohler continued to shine. The Bombers won the first ever Central Lakeshore Conference title (the CLC was brand new), despite being the smallest school (167 enrollment). As proof of its dominance, Kohler not only beat the second, third, and fourth place teams, it didnt even allow them to score a single point! Kohler filled 8 of a possible 22 spots on the CLCs all-conference football team with Tony Desmond, Mark Berlin (both offense and defense), Warren Wedepohl (both), Bob Maki, Rich Hummitzsch, and Dave Regan. Head coach Dale Johnson was quoted in The Sheboygan Press as saying Were not very big, but weve made up for it in desire, speed, and cohesiveness. All of the boys love football and contact work. They play the game as its supposed to be playedhard, but clean. I want good football players, but I also want gentlemen. Besides, many of them have played together since they were in seventh grade. 1970 proved to be even more special than the previous year. In the spring, the track team didnt settle for second placethis time it won the Class C state title (its fourth crown in six years). Rich Hummitzsch placed second at state in the 440-yard run and third in the 100-yard dash. John Funk won a state title in the high jump by reaching 6 3; Joe Kleefisch also jumped 6 3 but lost a jump-off to Funk. How many teams could say they had not only the best in the state at a certain event, but the two best? The fall 1970 football season was one for the ages. The Bombers again won the CLC, outscoring opponents by a whopping 314-20. Unfortunately, there was no playoff system in those days, so Kohler had to settle for finishing #2 in the statewide Associated Press small schools poll, as voted by a group of sports writers from throughout the state. Speedy and elusive running back Rich Hummitzsch was selected First Team All-State, a rare honor for a Kohler athlete. Hummitzsch scored 15 rushing touchdowns in that special 1970 season and averaged an amazing 12.3 yards every time he ran the ball. Not content with simply running for scores, Hummitzsch had another five touchdowns receiving, ran back three punts for TDs, and even threw a touchdown passall of this despite sitting on the bench almost half the time due to the lopsided victories. In one special game, a 53-0 shellacking of JFK Prep, Hummitzsch scored five touchdowns, including a 46-yard pass from standout quarterback Bob Maki; a 3-yard run; a 24-yard run; a 45-yard run; and 46-yard punt return. For good measure, he also threw a pass for a 42-yard completion. The late Dwight Pelkin (former Sheboygan Press Sports Editor) wrote that He [Hummitzsch] was an amazing breakaway threat, frequently cutting loose on long TD runs of more than half the field. Head coach Dale Johnson also earned Pelkins praise as one of the best coaches around. Of course, any great team has more than one standout player, and this Kohler team was no exception. In one of his columns, Pelkin wrote, quite possibly the best back in the areaand that includes the City of Sheboygan as wellis Kohlers Bob Maki who happens to be a superlative quarterback on a club that is so beautifully balanced that his own strong arm and running potential is subordinated to the operation of the team as a unit. A great leader. With great attitude. The momentum from the superlative football season carried over to the following spring. The Bombers tied Peshtigo for the 1971 state title. Joe Kleefisch set the Class C state record with a spectacular high jump of 6 6. John Funk was fourth at 6 3. No longer having to concern himself with avoiding tacklers, Rich Hummitzsch blazed to a first place finish in the 440. David Haack took a strong fourth in the mile run, and the 880 relay team came home with third place medals. In the summer 1971 baseball season, Mike Ehren, now a junior, was up to his old tricks again, this time striking out 21 batters in a 20 shutout of Howards Grove. Just like that it was fall again, and the 1971 edition of the Blue Bombers football team was master of the gridiron once more, winning its third straight CLC championship. The seniors on that team had not lost a single game the past three seasons! Hummitzsch finished his career with a total of 2,349 yards (10 yds. per carry), 33 TDs running, 12 more TDs receiving, 3 on kickoffs, and 4 on punts. As if all of this excellence wasnt enough, this special era was capped off in the spring of 1972 with another state track championship. Kohler qualified 20 team members for state, led again by the exploits of Joe Kleefisch, who had added dominance in the high and low hurdles to his high jump prowess. (Editors note: The Kohler boys basketball teams were also noteworthy during this period. See page 13 of the April 2011 issue of The Kohler Villager for mention of the basketball successes.)

HOLIDAY TRASH PICK-UP: When a holiday falls on a Monday all garbage pick-ups will be one day later than scheduled. For example, Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 5th; therefore garbage pickup for that week will be on Wednesday, Sept. 7th. REPORTING OF ILLICIT DISCHARGE: It is a requirement in the Village of Kohler Storm water permit with the DNR to educate the Public on illicit discharges to the storm water system. An illicit discharge would be the dumping of any chemical, pet waste, or hazardous substance into the street or a storm basin inlet. The substance would eventually make its way into the Sheboygan River causing a pollution hazard. To report an illicit discharge, please call the Public Works office at 459-3881. Have you wondered where you might be able to dispose of household hazardous waste or agricultural chemicals that are no longer usable? Sheboygan County and Wisconsins Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and Natural Resources have teamed up to establish two collection sites for disposing of hazardous waste. Hazardous waste, if not disposed of properly, can create a potential health risk to people and can threaten our environment, eventually contaminating our groundwater, rivers, and lakes. Farms, greenhouses, nurseries, and related green businesses are also able to dispose of agchemical wastes directly at the collection site. Unused, damaged or banned ag-chemicals found in old farm out-buildings should also be disposed of at one of the collection facilities located in Sheboygan or Plymouth. For information on State programs visit: http://www.datcp.state.wi.us/arm/agriculture/pest-fert/pesticides/cleansweep/index.jsp. counselors include; Aidan and Conner Hogan, Katie Lindow, Megan Conklin, Emery Edmunds, Courtney Rutten, and Lindsey Griswold. LPGA Championship Planning: Next year July 2nd-8th, Blackwolf Run will be the host of the Womens LPGA Championship. I was not in Kohler in 1998 during the previous womens tournament, but am aware of some of the issues. The Kohler Police Department has already been involved in planning this upcoming event. We will take every step possible to make hosting this upcoming event as seamless and enjoyable as possible. Obviously traffic and parking are a major concern and that will be one of our main focal points during this planning process. School is back in Session: Now that school is back in session, please remember to drive carefully on the streets around the school. The speed limit is 15 mph when children are present in the school zones. There is no stopping or standing of vehicles for the westbound traffic on School St. Also, parents that drop children off in the morning should do so close to the crosswalk so the students can be helped across the street. Students that are crossing in mid-block amongst the vehicles are harder to see and are not as safe. Also remember that students can now be dropped off on the north side under the canopy to avoid the traffic.

Actions taken by the Village Board during their meeting on July 11, 2011: Approved animal variance for Randy Brotz, 902 Mulberry Lane, for five cats. Approved Operators Licenses. Approved May & June 2011 Revenue & Expense Reports, Bank Account Reconciliation and Journal Entries. Re-appointed Brian Post & Lynn Rousse to the Tourism Promotion & Development Committee. Authorized Laurie Lindows attendance at the 2011 Academy for Civic & Public Affairs 7/25-7/28. Approved Ordinance 2011-3, Enacting a Temporary Moratorium on Wind Energy Systems.

Kohler Schools Ready for a New Year

Kohler Public Schools will open its doors for students on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. The graduating class of 2012 will be the group of young people to complete their high school education in Kohler Schools. Over the summer months several projects were completed to maintain the school facilities. The large gym floor was refinished, a temperamental elevator was repaired, the jungle gym was fixed and ready, and all of the outdoor play equipment was refreshed with 100 yards of wood chips. The building interior is gleaming, and teachers are already all over campus preparing classrooms for the students. The first official day back for teachers is Tuesday, August 30th. This day will be dedicated to team building and to analyzing progress from the past few years in order to focus on continually improving results. The 2011-2012 school year will be an exciting year as Kohler Schools introduces a number of new efforts. Kohler High School is launching a new College and Career Planning Program with the generous support of Kohler Company. Through this program all students will receive expert advice focusing on college advising and planning. The ultimate goal is for all graduates to be matched and admitted to the right college or career opportunity. The new school year will include full implementation of our High School Advisory model. Each of the students will meet twice each month with their advisor to build community, monitor progress, and participate in important character development conversations. The High School Community Service Graduation Requirement is fully prepared for implementation as well. Students are required to participate in community service as part of meeting graduation requirements. Students are encouraged to engage in ten-hour projects in established not-forprofit agencies. They not only give back to their communities but develop important leadership skills as well. Starting this year, seniors will participate in ropes and challenges experiences and in very unique leadership-learning experiences. These experiences are designed to make senior year a powerful developmental experience, connect seniors to one another in new ways, and position seniors to be leaders in the school, in their advisory groups, and in their lives beyond Kohler Schools. In addition to the new programs being implemented, the coming school year will also include installation of building-wide wireless internet access. Kohler Schools will see the first use of individual student laptops and tablets in our classrooms. This opportunity will come later in the year as the system is installed and training is provided for teachers and students. Kohler Schools will continue the work of Kind Matters which was planned by students, teacher, and parents. Kind Matters is an effort to build a more caring school and community. Last year, support from Kohler School Friends and the Kohler Schools Foundation allowed for the implementation of the Kind Campaign and Challenge Day. The overall mission of Kind Matters will continue through team-building activities, work to honor and include all students in school life and through other events planned by the steering committee. Kohler Schools is proud to continue the rich tradition of excellence and reminds all community members to be watchful on school days as students take to the streets on bikes and on foot traveling to and from campus. The 2011-2012 school year will see exciting changes coming to Kohler Schools. Please join the teachers and staff as Kohler Schools work to inspire, engage, and support all students as they pursue their dreams.

Children with disabilities procedure

The school district must locate, identify, and evaluate all children with disabilities, including children with disabilities attending private schools in the school district, regardless of the severity of their disabilities. The school district has a special education screening program to evaluate all children with suspected disabilities and are at least three years old. Upon request, the school district will screen a child who has not graduated high school to determine whether a special education referral is appropriate. A request may be made by contacting Jackie Schira, Special Education Director at 459-2920 x1200.

Kohler School District Annual Notice of Special Education Referral and Evaluation Procedures
Upon request, the Kohler School District is required to evaluate a child for eligibility for special education services. A request for evaluation is known as a referral. When the district receives a referral, the district will appoint an Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to determine if the child has a disability, and if the child needs special education services. The district locates, identifies, and evaluates all children with disabilities who are enrolled by their parents in private (including religious) schools, elementary schools and secondary schools located in the district. A physician, nurse, psychologist, social worker, or administrator of a social agency, who reasonably believes that a child brought to him or her for services, is a child with a disability, has a legal duty to refer the child, including a homeless child, to the school district in which the child resides. Before referring the child, the person making the referral must inform the childs parent that the referral will be made. Others, including parents, who reasonably believe a child is a child with a disability, may also refer the child, including a homeless child, to the school district in which the child resides. Referrals must be in writing and include the reason why the person believes the child is a child with a disability. A referral may be made by contacting Jackie Schira, Director of Special Education, Kohler School District, at (920) 459-2920 or by writing her at 333 Upper Road, Kohler, WI. 53044

Savor the Date for the 11th Annual Kohler Food & Wine Experience, October 20-23, 2011
One of the Most Delicious Destinations in the Midwest boasts culinary delights, wine and spirits galore, educational seminars and special events during its annual celebration
Every October for more than a decade, the quaint Village of Kohler transforms into one of The Most Delicious Destinations in the Midwest as it hosts the annual Kohler Food & Wine Experience. This years celebration, held October 20-23, 2011, will include nationally renowned Chefs Alexandra Guarnaschelli, Jacques Torres, Charlie Trotter and Andrew Zimmern, in addition to a strong line-up of regional restaurateurs, wine experts and mixologists. The highly anticipated annual fest, co-sponsored by Bon Apptit Magazine, promises more than 60 fine wine and spirits, 20 cooking demonstrations and seminars, and dozens of premier events that take place throughout The American Club Resort, the Midwests only AAA Five-Diamond resort-hotel. Experts from across the nation will mingle with food and wine enthusiasts, host wine, spirits and beer tastings, and share their epicurean expertise. We are thrilled to share this years line-up of celebrity chefs, presenters and top wine experts in the industry, says Teo Zagroba, Beverage Manager for The American Club Resort. The variety of wine, spirits, cooking demos and culinary experiences to choose from allows our guests to learn more about pairing options in an enjoyable, interactive environment. We are extremely proud of the range of wine and spirits we are offering this year, giving people the chance to enjoy something new or revisit a favorite. An exciting addition to the 11th annual festival is Pig Cheese Cocktail on Saturday evening ($52.50), hosted by Deaths Door Spirits. Based in Madison, Wisconsin, Deaths Door uses the spent grains and organic dairy from the spirits to raise Swabian Hall Swine. Chef Paul Smitala of Blackwolf Run will prepare a delectable pork-themed menu, while guests feast on cheese pairings from the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board and enjoy featured cocktails. Savor delicious bites and sips at the 11th annual Kohler Food & Wine Experience. The schedule of events, tickets and hotel packages are now available at www.KOHLERfoodandwine.net or 1-800-344-2838. Ticketed event prices start at $21 and many events and tastings are complimentary. Events sell out quickly so it is advised to make reservations early to help ensure best selection and availability.
