:NYE 2 Remember
It isnt News Years without over 300 of your closest friends, at a hotspot, on a catwalk, with a glass of champagne and the paparazzi. It was Hollywood meets Milan in the LC for a NYE bash the attendees will not soon forget. And when I say closest friends, I mean facebook friends, best friends, friends of friends, friends with benefits, old friend, new friends, words with friends, neighborhood friends, childhood friends and FOM (Friends of Marie). Everyone who is anyone made it to this soiree! The Loft (located inside Nylo Hotel-Las Colinas) brought the money to the table for their version of that age old transition into another chance at getting it right New Years Eve. Many guests were regulars who invited friends to see their favorite hangout location. A big number too, were facebook friends and then our friends from local corporate office buildings came out in force, said Kirk Richard, FB Manager-NYLO. And so many more were local Las Colinas residents and NYLO continues to grow its local fan base through fresh new and exciting events. Continued from Front Page carpet atmosphere, and those flashbulbs gave way to flashy clothes with flashy smiles when the guests started to show up. Once you hit the front doors at NYLO, the first stop was The Brugal Rum Lounge. Everyone was offered a Brugal rum cocktail to lossen up before their turn on the runway. When it was time, champagne in-hand, they strutted, strolled, sashayed and struck poses on the catwalk. Many came back and walked it again and had fun with the crowd that gathered next to the stage to see the show. We were able to transform the entire property into one huge fashion event. Every area had a different feel, but still tied into the event, said Kirk. NYLOs edge showed, the Loft is not just a bar, its an experience. We are very fortunate to have such a beautiful canvas to work with. The main bar was dressed to the T with Lamarca, Ultimat, and one of our main sponsors, Patron. Heineken sponsored and decked out the library with green lighting in Heineken fashion. The outside patio and bar had its own smooth vibe going. Guests lounged on the new patio furniture and beside the water, and

at one point it was standing room only poolside. Each corner of the pool was lit with large columns that blew in the cool breeze. Someone said it reminded them of a winter night in South Beach, cool, but not cold. The focus of the night took place in the ballroom. Sofa suites with umbrella lights stayed filled all night. There was crazy energy on the dance floor when DJ Fishr threw out the music, and one of the coolest features was the back drop. It showed the Dallas NYE live count down and the crowd was ready. Lamarca Prosecco D.O.C. Sparkling Wine sponsored the bubbly and provided party favors at 11:30pm. Once 12am neared, the music went off, the countdown started, the room filled and everyone did the countdown together. then the entire group sang Auld Lang Syne. Couples shared moments, friends hugged and celebrated the gift of a brand new year. The goal of all our parties are to give guest something to remember, something that makes them say, this was a night I will never forget, said Kirk. That was the intent of this event, and we nailed it.

1/20 - 2/4/2012 2:30 & 8 p.m. Woman in Mind ICT MainStage Dupree Theater by Alan Ayckbourn What would happen if your dreary, everyday life was suddenly replaced with a wonderfully exciting, romantic life? Neglected housewife, Susan, is married to boring cleric, Gerald. One day she gets knocked out by stepping on the tooth end of a garden rake. She experiences hilarious hallucinations in which her oppressive everyday life is replaced by a fantasy in which she is an ideal wife and mother with an ideal family. While her real family treats her with condescension and apathy, her fantasy family dresses in lovely white, always drinks champagne, lives in a stately home and tells her that she is wonderful. Eventually, however, the fantasy family becomes nightmarish, and Susan begins to realize that she is going mad. This excellent, dark, witty and surreal comedy is considered to be one of Ayckbourns best. Directed by Alan Hanna $5-20

I know its terribly cliche, but I would have to say God. So many questions about the meaning of life and what happens after. Then probably my 90 year old self. I would want to know the things I should and shouldnt do to make it that far. What things to take seriously and what I should blow off and not worry about. Since inviting my own self would save a seat (we could share), I guess I would have room at the table for one more. Therefore I would invite my 62 year old son Nolan, so he could meet God without having to die first.

The GREENLight
GREENPower to the People
Once again, Greenlighters, weve gotten through another year. Weve put 2011 behind us and were looking to the future of 2012. Now, assuming the world is not coming to an end next December, lets look towards the future of green technology. Forget all the repackaged fossil fuel boondoggles. There is no such thing as clean coal, natural gas is only cleaner in relation to other fossil fuels and carbon sequestration is only putting all that nasty stuff down where it can get into our precious water supply. Lets look at things that will really make our world a better place. Things like solar cells. Several companies are now printing solar cells on thin sheets of aluminum and have gotten the manufacturing price down from a couple of dollars per watt of electricity produced to under a dollar and predictions are around 30 cents a watt in the near future. They inkjet the solar electricity producing products onto the sheet like a printer. The cost is coming down and even a conservative Glen Sovian source like Forbes magazine says solar is Contributing fossil fuels. http:// competitive with Writer www.forbes.com/sites/alexknapp/2011/04/06/thecost-of-solar-power-is-expected-to-decline-50over-the-next-decade/ Predictions for onshore windmills make its price similar to nearly every fossil fuel and that is not factoring in the health and environmental cost of fossil fuels. www.ucsusa.org/clean_energy/ technology_and_impacts/energy_technologies/ coal-vs-wind-power-you-be.html

Fuel the Future

Information provided by Keep Irving Beautiful

Whats the big drawback? You cannot use only one source to provide all the energy we need for this country. Of course we dont use one source now. We also need to completely overhaul our transmission system. It is getting old and is a big roadblock to any energy plan no matter the source. It will also take a lot of will-power and effort to do what it takes to stop our inertia on fossil fuels and start this country down a path to a clean, renewable energy future. But if we dont start now, we run the risk of, at best, falling behind the rest of the world in energy creation. That would mean economic problems and job losses and, at worst, the global climate change scenarios coming true. We all know we need to do this. If not now, when? If you are thinking globally and acting locally its a no-brainer. See you next month, Greenlighters

How to Create a New YOU in the New Year

Its that time of year! Time to take an honest assessment of where you are in life, and decide what youd like to achieve this coming year. Its a sad fact that the majority of folks NEVER see those resolutions come to fruition. Thats why today, Id like to share with you a few tips that will help you stick with your resolutions, no matter whatcreating a NEW YOU in 2012! The major reason people dont follow through on their resolutions is FEAR. Change is scary, and committing to change is a scary endeavor, to be sure. But follow these tips and you should be able to nip fear in the bud and actually accomplish what you set out to achieve in 2012! 1) Be specific. You may have heard this a million times, but all too often people make nonspecific resolutions like I want to get fit. Instead, drill down to exactly what you want. Try a resolution like, By March 31st 2012, I will be 20 pounds lighter. The specificity makes it more realistic and gives you a marker of success that lets you know youve ARRIVED at your goal. 2) Baby steps. The fact that youre making a resolution implies that youre trying to change something in your life thats pretty big. Youve been unhappy with it for some time, which is why youre resolving to change it. Therefore, most resolutions tend to be HUGE changes. Getting fit, getting out of debt, etc...are all BIG goals. In order to achieve them, youre going to have to break them down into itty-bitty steps. Its like the old adage, How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. So break down your resolution into mini resolutions that will serve as stepping stones to the bigger goal you want to achieve (i.e. I will walk around the neighborhood for 20 minutes every day. I will eat only 1,700 calories for the next 30 days, etc.) 3) Dont resolve to change what you cant control. This is a biggie. But make sure your resolutions are things that are directly under your control. For example, a resolution to get a raise at work is something that is ultimately beyond your control. Instead, make the resolution to start my own part-time online business to give MYSELF the raise I want. 4) Share your resolutions. Let others know what youre planning. Doing so will give you a sense of accountability that will help push youespecially during those times where you dont feel like doing the actions you KNOW will get you to your goals. 5) No fear. Finally, dont let fear get in the way of what you really want. Instead of dwelling on what ifs, take action. Action, no matter how small, will help give you the momentum you need. And once youve started taking action, youll have a better understanding of what you need to do to get to your final destination. So this year, set some resolutions and follow through until youve achieved them!

Irvings Our Lady of the Shoes Statue The City of Leon in Mexico has long been considered the shoe capital of the world. With a metropolitan area population of about 2 million, it is the largest city in the State of Guanajuato, situated near the center of Mexico. Irving established a Sister Cities relationship with Leon in 1996. In recognition of the friendship, cultural and trade ties that were formed, Leon Mayor Jorge Obregon-Serrano presented a gift in 1999 to then Irving Mayor Morris Parrish in the form of a statute: Our Lady of the Shoes. This statue is located and displayed in a prominent place in the lobby of Irvings Human Services Building on Nursery Avenue and Irving Blvd., as noted in the photos. The work of art was, no doubt, inspired by both the proud view of a modest but honorable tradition and legacy that Leon boasts in its leather and shoe industry, as well as Mexicos sacred and widely venerated patron virgin, Our Lady of Guadalupe. prospered, with countless examples to date of cultural exchanges and trade activities. Leon is a city with a rich history, extensive cultural heritage and tremendous trade potential, all of which serve Irving well in this relationship. The Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce is proud to continue seeking and promoting trade potential for positive economic impact for both communities, and representing the City of Irving in its Sister Cities relationship with Leon.

MIXED MEDIA BRANDING Glory House Catering, FigDesign, and Elemental Methods
announced the launch of their collaborative effort gloryhouse 2.0, the next generation of marketing initiatives from Glory House Catering. And Irving-Las Colinas Chamber Business Mixer held at Glory House on Main Street in Irvings Heritage District, served as the perfect launch site...pun intended. Joann Goin, owner of Glory House Catering, explained that gloryhouse 2.0 is the incorporation of branding with new seasonal logos, a refreshing web site and an updated iPhone app to create the next generation in restaurants and catering. And by partnering with other chamber members, their businesses create an atmosphere that promotes the fabric of economic growth in their community.

The Irving Chamber provides a supportive business atmosphere that allows mutually beneficial relationships among member companies, said David Fiegenschue with FigDesign. FigDesign appreciates the level of activity and interest thats found at Chamber events and looks forward to continuing to participate in Chamber programs. FigDesign helped Glory House with concept, strategy and visual rebranding. The current logo was modified and redesigned with a flexible letter O to represent different seasonal events, such as Valentines Day and Mothers Day. Then they refreshed the web site. The responsive design adapts to display appropriately on desktops, tablets and smart phones. You can get your daily tweets, as well as more detailed information about catering and receptions. They supported the brand by using consistent graphics for the Glory House iPhone app. Elemental Methods updated the Glory House iPhone app, which is available through the iTunes Store, and made the app simpler and easier to check the daily Bistro menu, get estimates on catering and receptions, and includes an interactive map to Glory House, Mike Christopher with Elemental Methods said. As a provider of Technology and Innovation services, Elemental Methods helps businesses implement solutions to reach more customers and compete in todays global economy. The collaboration between Fig Design, Elemental Methods and Glory House (all fellow Chamber members) brings a powerful, innovative marketing technique to Glory House. said Joann.... No wonder Irving sets the stage for small business on a national level!

CALENDAR OF EVENTS 2012

photos by george! by M.Marie Raym It was an amazing grand opening at the Las Colinas Country Club. when the newly reinvented Carpenters Members Bar & Grill hosted its first party to a record number of guests. Named after Ben Carpenter, who started it all here in Las Colinas, the Bar & Grill now has a fantastic wrap around bar, inviting lounge area with comfortable cushions and a big screen for the big games and plenty of table seating for a nice meal overlooking the golf course. After ICTN and the rest of the media, got their interviews and covered the ribbon cutting, the party spilled into every area of the Club it seemed. With mini bars set up along corridors, dinner served in the Grand Ballroom, the bar bustling with celebration and people mingling on the outdoor patio next to the recently installed fire pits. Inside, cans and cash were collected for Irving Cares, which received $1,180 in donations of cash and checks and 6 bins of donated food. We can use the donations to provide over 4,100 pounds of groceries, and that will feed 50 Irving families for a week, said Teddie Story, CEO of Irving Cares. TALK OR TEXT?
By Mark B Hall, 2012

http://markbbhall.blogspot.com/

Talk or text???? This is written for all you youngsters than have to live with some electronic device in your hand. As the late Andy Rooney would say something like, I remember when we thought a TV would destroy the world some said we would stop talking with each other or even stop other things if the TV was brought into the bedroom. Now we have these little hand held things called cell phones. The latest crave seems to be talking on the cell phone all the time especially while driving. Most states have enacted legislation to fine us for talking on the phone while driving in a school zone like that stops anyone. Now the discussions by law makers is of taking the fines to the next level - no phones while driving. This sounds almost reasonable until you look at this younger generation. They dont even talk on the darn thing; they seem to always be typing or in some rare cases, playing some game. Have you ever stopped at a red light and looked around to see ALL the other drivers talking or typing? I have. Makes me wonder how everyone got so important that they have be talking all the time or maybe they are just too insecure. What ever happen to just listening to the radio, 8-track, cassette tape, CD, MP3 player? I guess on the positive side if you are texting, at least no one would hear your expletives when that driver ahead cuts you off you do know that your conversations/texts are being broadcast over the cellular air waves and of course all those messages are being recorded? I wonder how many FCC guys are laughing about listening and reviewing such nonsense. Recently, I saw an article in the New York Times that mentioned that 55% of the technicians monitoring the bypass machines during heart surgery admitted to talking or texting during surgery. So if those guys can handle it, I know I can. Of course, what started the study was some neurosurgeon was sued for leaving a guy paralyzed and was found to have made 10 personal calls during the operation. I digress. I think, passing a law prohibiting talking or texting while driving would make the roads much safer for all of us. But, I would want an exclusion provision for me, as I dont think I abuse this technology. Wait a minute my phone just beeped, it is the wife texting me to bring home milk and bread yes, I can cut across these three lanes of traffic to pull into the store parking lot. Bye now! btw-dont text and drive behind me at least be in front of me so I can watch out for you.

Local, family owned brewery chooses local, family owned distributor Franconia Brewing Company has appointed Ben E. Keith Beverage Distributors distribution rights for the state of Texas. The McKinney, Texas brewery will continue to self distribute in its home town. Franconia Brewery was established in McKinney, Texas in March of 2008 fulfilling the life-long dream of owner and head brewer, Dennis Wehrmann. Dennis comes from a family with real brewing history. He grew up in an area surrounded by several historic breweries and his great grandfather owned the brewery Franken Braeu in Tanna Germany. A majority of his family members work in the brewing industry so you can really say it is in the blood. After graduating from Brewmaster School in Munich, Dennis quickly set his sights on moving to the U.S. and starting his own brewery true to his heritage, and in 2008 he did just that. We are very proud to become partners with Franconia and appreciate Dennis confidence in Ben E. Keith

Beverages, said Kevin Bartholomew, president of Ben E. Keith Beverage Distributors. Dennis brews fantastic beers and we are privileged to have them in our portfolio. We look forward to working with the Ben E. Keith team, said Dennis Wehrmann, owner and brew master of Franconia Brewery. Over the past 4 years, we have witnessed their professionalism, and we believe this partnership will allow us to move forward in our endeavors as well as help us keep our promise to our customers. Ben E. Keith will begin distributing Franconia Wheat, Franconia Lager, and Franconia Dunkel kegs this month throughout the state of Texas. Limited amounts of seasonal beers will be available throughout the year. For more information about Franconia visit www.franconiabrewing.com.

A Saint for Shoes! PAGE 13

Have you taken a stroll around Heritage Crossing recently? You may be surprised at what all is available. We suggest you begin your tour at the Chambers Heritage Crossing office 135 S. Jefferson, across from the Heritage Senior Center, where you may pick up information about sites to visit within Irving. This is also the home of the Irving Hispanic Chamber. Taking a brisk walk down Irving Boulevard, you will want to stop at Big State Drug Store (100 E. Irving Blvd) to get your prescription filled or have one of their world famous milk shakes and hamburgers (see D Magaizine archives). If you want a more formal place for lunch, check out Glory House Catering (109 S. Main) where you can select from a great salad bar, have homemade soup, and a choice of entres for lunch, or even plan your wedding from the location to the reception. Or try Villas Grill at 137 S. Main, for Brazilian barbecue that rivals the expensive places in Addison. Other places in Heritage Crossing to stop for lunch include Scooter Beans, 142 W. Irving Blvd, a great place to sit under the canopy and enjoy a delicious barbecue sandwich and an ice tea. Or visit Burger King or McDonalds for an all-time favorite. Just a little further down Irving Boulevard is Joes Coffee Shop with home-cooked meals and pies to die for. While on Main Street, dont forget to shop at Fabulously Frugale, 105 S. Main Street, for the latest fashions and jewelry. Office Products Warehouse, 135 S. Main, Continued on page 15
