Descendants of William Deacon Hopper

Generation No. 1

1. Sr. William Deacon1 Hopper was born 1707 in Bertie Co., NC, and died 1772 in Matrimony
Creek, Rockingham Co., NC. He married Mary Ann Wright Abt. 1729. She was born Abt. 1710, and
died 1747.

Notes for Sr. William Deacon Hopper:

Served as a Quartermaster Sergeant in Revolutionary War from 9-28-1776 to June 14-1778. Settled on
Matrimoney Creek around 1762, with a grant from the Earl of Granville. per Robin Taylor
(robinlt@airmail.net)

GCu6383302@aol.com says: The Hopper family of Leaksville, North Carolina by Ruby Huber
Robertson as told to her by Judge Henery Lane of Leaksville and her aunt Maudis Roberts who owns
and lives on the old Hopper Home 3 1/2 miles from Leaksville.

The Hoppers came from England to the West Indies, then to Carolina and on to Leaksville. William
came to North Carolina in 1752, surveying land with Shurton, Chief surveyor of Lord Granville, who
owned this part of North Carolina by grant of Charles II of England.

Lewis M. Owens, Our Kentucky Kinfolks, 2824 Dan Patch Dr., Lexington KY 40511 says:
They first lived on Matrimony Ctreek, a branch of the Dan River, in NC and later some lived on Smith
River in Henry Co., VA. Matrimoney Creek begins in Henry Co., VA and flows south into
Rockingham Co., NC. It empties into the Dan River near the western city limits of Eden, NC. It was
given its name in 1728 by a member of William Byrd's survey party, as they were establishing the VA-
NC border. Several small branches that flow into it along the way are known as Matrimony creek as
well. There are a Lot of Hopper's in this area.

William surveyed in Rockingham Co., then Rowan Co., in 1753. In 1761 he obtained a grant of 710
acres. An Additional grant of 510 acres from the Earl of Granville on May 10, 1762 was confirmed. In
1773 he signed a petition against moving the courthouse in Guilford Co.

SOURCE: History of Missouri by Goodspeed Publishing Co., of Chicago, 1888, p. 936.

According to the 1888 Goodspeeds history of Lawrence Co., MO, Thomas Hopper was born in NC in
1790, and Mary Penn, who at the time of her marriage was living in TN. Thomas Hopper spent his
youth in Grainger Co., Tn and received such education as the schools of that county afforded. There

3
he was married when about twenty-three years of age, as soon after located in Bedford Co.

In partnership with two other men he purchased some land, his share amounting to 160 acres. Upon
this he located and spent the remainder of his life, passing away at the age of eight-seven years. The
portion of Bedford Co., in which he settled was afterward mapped out as Marshall Co. From family
tradition we learn that Mary Penn is a distant relative of the famous William Penn. She also lived and
died on the old homestead in TN, and was eighty five years of age at the time of her death. The record
of our subject's family in both lines is remarkable for longevity.

Thomas Hopper and wife were the parents of ten children of whom Pass (Mrs. Henry Hay of
Tennessee) and James F., William H., and Elizabeth J. (Mrs. Thomas Baxter, of Tennessee) are living.
Those dead are John R., Charles, Joshua, Jackson, Richard and Rufus. This information was fiven to
Goodspeed by James F. Hopper.

John and Frank not born yet.

Nell Logue (Helen Shugart, grandaughter of Emma Alice Williams) believed that John B's Father was
named John and his Mother was either Martha or Kessiah. But she couldn't find where she had read
that information.

The 1850 Census for Bedford Co, Pg 95, 2nd Civil Dist, lists a John W and Kipiah Williams:

John W Williams 37 M Sadler b TN

Kipiah 36 F b TN
Lucy A 13 F b Alabama
Hugh S 8 M b TN
John B 4 M b TN
Robert S 1 M b TN
Elizabeth Thomas 26 F b NC
Joseph Bishop 17 M Apprentice b TN

There are 2 J B Williams in 1891 in Marshall Co, TN Voters List. One in Dist 7 and one in Dist 8. I have
not seen these records. The problem with this record is that Ida Mae said they moved from
Farmington to Texas when she was 9 years old. She was born in 1879 so the move was in 1888. JB
could have still held property and that is why he was on the Voters List.

His profile in the Grayson Co Platt Books states he was a Confederate Veteran.

Searches of the CSA records turn up 1 John B Williams who joined Co K, 5th Inf Reg Kentucky on Dec
14, 1861 and was elected Lt 1st Class and mustered out in Oct 1862. This seems an unlikely candidate
for our John B. Young men joined the service but it seems unlikely a 16 year old would be elected 1st
Lt.

The other is J B Williams who enlisted Sept 15, 1863 in Co B, 12th Cal Reg KY. No further information
on him.

There has been discussion on What the "B" stands for. Amy Clark (grandaughter of Lula Williams)
had been told the B stood for Benton. Betty Jo Arnold (daughter of Ida Mae Williams) says it was
Benjamin. To date, nothing has been found that has anything but a "B".
