Amy riley, master of gastronomy and author of Romancing the Stove, has come to the rescue to tell you everything you need to know about aphrodisiacs. They are basically a food that has a relationship with romance and sparking romance and libido, riley says. There are skeptics that believe the entire aphrodisiac experience is mental, but according to riley, There are absolutely physical effects that we have been able to measure scientificallysome in controlled studies and some just simply by understanding nutrition of food a little bit better. For men, the most arousing scent was a combination of pumpkin pie spice and lavender, and for women it was liquorice candy and cucumber, riley explains. one food that has thought to be an aphrodisiac is chocolateone of the most complex foods in the world. it has chemical compounds in it that have the ability to raise dopamine levels and send you into sweet ecstasy. However, a British
scientist proved the effects of chocolate are not very feasible to attain. A scientist in Britain proved that it would take more than 20 pounds of chocolate in one sitting for an averaged sized woman to experience any of those effects, riley says. So chocolateout of all of the aphrodisiac ingredients out therei would say is a little bit more myth than fact. Though it is true that some aphrodisiac foods are just myth, foods such as oysters and chili peppers have the ability to spice up your love life. i love to talk about oysters, because people think it is just a clich, but actually, oysters are an excellent source of zinc. Zinc is very important for blood flow. Simply put, you cant have an orgasm without it, riley says. Chili peppers are an excellent example of one, because they raise body temperaturethey can even help release endorphins. You can get a real high from a chili pepper, she continues. So next time you need some help in the boudoir, remember that though they dont taste as good as chocolate, oysters and chili peppers will get the job done.

While most people over the age of 12 arent buying into this particular concept, scent actually can play a very influential role when it comes to the bedroom, according to aromatherapist Derek Graystone, who works at our Touch Healing in london. Scents can be used to trigger memories of successful activities in the bedroom, good memories of past experiences, he says. i think weve probably all experienced a case where weve smelled a perfume or a cologne from a past lover that has brought pleasant memories back. He also said some scents serve as an aphrodisiac. Want to follow your nose to a better sex life? Here are some tips from Derek to use scent to your advantage and really make the guys or girls swoon. Au natural aromas According to Derek, the most erotic and stimulating scents are pure, earthy and natural. His selections for sexiest scents include ylang ylang, jasmine and citrus scents like grapefruit or lemon. Less is more While a lot of people assume more is better, especially when it comes to the bedroom, Derek says a little essential oil goes a long way. You can never use them straight on the skin, he says. it can cause serious reactions on the skin if its put on just straight. instead, for a scentual massage, Derek suggests mixing eight or nine drops of essential oil with a quarter cup of unscented massage oil or body lotion. Apply liberally. No fire in the bedroom While the first instinct might be incense, Derek says its not for everyone. They can be a little strong and [for] anyone with any allergies or who smokes, that can be a problem. instead, he suggests investing in a scent disperser, which you can pick up anywhere from the drug store to the grocery store. Simply add a few drops of your essential oil of choice to the dispenser then light a candle below for a sexy-scented ambiance. The grocery store cashier will be none-the-wiser.

Maddie Leznoff DEPUTY EDiTor Your knees are weak, your palms are sweaty and your stomach feels like you just rode a rollercoaster. While the symptoms suggest youre sick, its not the fluyoure just falling in love. While love is often portrayed as an intense emotional experience, its actually more of a physical ailment. its very physical, not just emotional. its deeply rooted in our brains that drives us to seek out the comfort of other people, says Kayt Sukel, author of Dirty Minds: How Our Brains Influence Love, Sex and Relationships. While you might see hearts plastered all over Valentine cards, Jody Culham, a psychology professor at Western who specializes in cognitive neuroscience, explains its the brain and various hormones and chemicals that are hard at work when you fall head-over-heels for another person. Theres a well known quote that the brain is the biggest sex organ, but i think you could also add that the brain is the biggest love organ, she says. According to Culham, research suggests there are three stages of falling in lovelust, attraction and attachmentand a few specific hormones and chemicals are crucial to the process. Dopamine Dopamine makes us highly motivated to seek out pleasure and is important at both the beginning of a relationship and later on. Theres the stage of attraction when you initially meet someone, and youre almost addicted to that person in the early stages of a new relationshipthats where the dopamine comes in, Culham says. its a neurotransmitter most highly associated with seeking out things that make you feel good, like romantic partners. if that spark from the beginning of the relationship is missing, you might need to find a way to release dopamine. We want to keep dopamine going if we want to stay in love with a partner. The easy way to do that it is sex, but of course over time the sex drive diminishes. if its someone you enjoy spending time with, that will also release dopamine, Sukel explains. Serotonin Serotonin, the same chemical involved with addiction, is affected when falling in love. There can be a drop in serotonin, which may be part of the reason why people can get obsessed with their romantic partners, Culham says. Sukel agrees. Some research suggests this causes this feeling of cravingalways after more time, more togetherness. Oxytocin Also known as the cuddle chemical, oxytocin is involved in the bonding process and is necessary for maternal loveits released when a woman gives birth. its also necessary to form a romantic connection. oxytocin has very physical effects when you fall in love. These chemicals work in your brain to not only give you those feelings of butterflies, but you are hyper focused on the person youre in love with, Sukel says. According to Culham, oxytocin is also involved in the attachment stage since it helps build a feeling of trust with a partneran extremely important part of any relationship.

Working with survival sex workers

Cheryl Stone NEWS FEATUrES EDiTor Theyre the women we dont want to see. The women who work the streets of london trading sex for money. The women who are known as survival sex workers. Survival sex work is defined as sex work done by people who are working the trade simply to make ends meet. Many of these women have addictions that lead to them being in this position. its extremely dangerous, and they know that, lorna Bruce, a sergeant with london Police Services persons at risk program, says. A lot of these girls have been violently assaulted. Bruce explains there are currently several johns going through the courts with assault charges. Part of her job is to inform prostitutes about how they can do their job safely. For example, she suggests safe places to take johns so they can get out if something goes wrong. Not one of them wants to be standing out there, she says. She notes what makes her job unique is her ability to go out on the streets and meet and work with these women. When the program was started in 2005, it was rare for an assaulted prostitute to go to the police. Now she has established trust with some of the women. ill come into work and there will be two or three women in headquarters waiting to talk to me, Bruce says. Bruce also explains all of the women she works with were addicts. She says she received training to do drug assessments, to get these women into a rehabilitation facility right away. i can sit down with her then and there. Karen Burton, needle and syringe program coordinator with the regional HiV/AiDS Connection, works with survival sex workers as well. The program offers addicts clean needles, and in turn, begins to build a relationship with these clients so they know where to go to get more help. The relationship starts right from there, Burton explains. While its up to the client when they want to end their addiction, they provide information about where to get help. Burton says the fear of judgment keeps many of the women she works with from getting help. What the public tends to see is women just out there selling it, she says. We dont look deeper. Bruce says the trusting relationship she has with the sex workers means many of them turn to her for their drug assessments. its one of the services the program offers to these women to keep them from cycling through the court system. According to Bruce, the program has seen 21 women leave the sex trade since 2005on the other hand, she has lost 15. i keep their pictures in my office, so people know why were here. Theyre some of the most amazing women youll ever meet, Burton says of her clients. She says while the public looks down on sex workers, these are women with negotiation skillsskills to keep themselves safe and even the ability to diffuse tense situations. This is what gives Burton hope for her clients. i have client that im watching right now, she says. i dont think shes aware of the changes shes preparing to make in her life. Shes doing things differently, i dont feel like this is going to be her life forever.

Trans-cending gender norms

Nicole Gibillini ArTS & liFE FEATUrES EDiTor University is a natural time for people to blossomand for personal growth. For transgender students, this opportunity is often not as clear. [University] is the point at which [transgender students] might be able to reinvent themselves to some extent, and i think there are very few supports for that here, says Susan Knabe, an assistant professor in the department of womens studies and feminist research at Western. Knabe teaches a course on sexuality and gender. She says trans students face particular challenges on campusan issue that stems from peoples understanding of gender. What we need to do is start recognizing variant genderor non-normative genderearly on and allow people that particular freedom. in the last provincial election, an advertisement ran in multiple major newspapers that said, Please! Dont confuse meim a girl. Controversial political statements like this have triggered students to take a more proactive approach in creating awareness about transgender needs. Universities, like Western, have brought more attention to these needs with services like PrideWestern. A recent Massachusetts study found that one in 200 adults is transgender. But restrooms, healthcare centres, gyms and residences are still only catered to cisgender people, according to Greta Bauer, associate professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at Western. Universities and colleges, high schools and elementary schools, need to be aware that they have trans alumni, they have trans students enrolled, and they will have trans students enrolling in the future, she says. She further notes that while trans people have the legal right to use restrooms and services appropriate to the gender with which they identify, implementing systems and policies catered to cisgender peoplethe term to describe when one identifies with their given gender can make transgender people feel alienated. They often feel the need to hide their true selves in order to fit in with these systems. While trans people are often grouped with lesbian, gay and bisexual people, their needs can be quite unique. Bauer says gender identity has nothing to do with whom you have sex. Trans people often find that cisgender lesbian, gay and bi people actually know very little about what it means to be trans, she says. often, when we speak of lGBT programs, we mean lGB programs we need to understand that we cant say we are addressing lGBT needs and have a silent T. Bauer is heading the Trans PUlSE Project, the first large federally funded survey of trans health in Canada in attempt to make trans needs visible. There is nothing about being lesbian, gay or bisexual that requires interacting with the medical system in [the same] way, she explains. And nothing that requires one to be quite so visible as when they socially transition and begin living in their core gender. As institutional discrimination is becoming increasingly problematic, people are taking a stronger interest in gender and sexuality studies. The demand for this education legitimizes peoples concerns about gender and sexuality, according to Knabe. it speaks to a very specific group of people who feel that their needs arent necessarily being addressed elsewhere, she says. Awareness around transgender needs is prudent, but who is responsible for this educative progression? Theres an onus on us and on people like myself who teach in the area of sexuality studies to actually create a welcoming space where we can talk about those issues, Knabe urges. i also think its really important that we are seeing a lot more transgender people [] who are there as role models and who are articulate and passionate speakers on behalf of those who are transgenderits really important in changing peoples viewpoints.

The pros and cons of friends with benefits

Kaitlyn McGrath oPiNioNS EDiTor Having good friends is always a benefit, and occasionally, a good friend might even provide a benefit. Sometimes two friends agree to have sex withand heres the kickerno strings attached. Were familiar with this hybrid friendship-relationship. Weve seen that movie with Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, right? or was it Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman? Think of any poorly scripted romantic comedy, because they all end the samethe friends, who swore they were just friends, fell in love. But can two people actually have a meaningless sexual relationship? or does someone always get hurt? According to relationship therapist Guy Grenier, depending on your personality type, a friends with benefits relationship may or may not be right for you. Simply put, it works for some people, it doesnt work for others. The people it doesnt work for are the people who feel that there ought to be a strong connection between relationships and sex, he says. And if you dont feel that those two things are connected, then this just might be the relationship for you. But before you run off and try to have sex with all your friends, Grenier insists its important not to push your own values onto someone elseif this type of relationship is going to function, both parties must be on the same page. if youre still skeptical, Grenier suggests thinking about friends with benefits the same way you might think of another physical activity, like tennis. You might enjoy playing tennis, but you no longer have a partner to play with. luckily, you have a friend who also happens to enjoy tennis. instead of letting both your talents go to waste, you decide to partner up and work on your tennis technique together. Everything is going great and all of a sudden youre playing tennis all the time, and getting quite good. But its only casual tennis and while its nice to have a consistent partner, you havent committed to playing every day. So if your partner is up for a round, and youve got other plans, well theres nothing stopping them from pairing up with someone else. in fact, Grenier adds, You might like them to play tennis with someone else so that they could improve their game when they played you. However, even around campus there are common conceptions of whats wrong with the friends with benefits set-up. After conducting an informal survey, according to girls, guys are assholes, and according to guys, girls are clingy. So what does this all boil down to? Basically, there is no calculated formula to assess how likely it is that this scenario will succeed. Grenier explains even if two people were genuinely only friends before the sexual relationship started, according to the mere exposure effect, Simply being around somebody increases the probability that you will start liking them and developing affection for them. According to Grenier, the best advice when it comes to this, or any type of relationship, is simple. Dont be navekeep your eyes open, and be ready to evolve.
Why do we cheat?
Jesica Hurst ArTS & liFE EDiTor For most people, trust is a huge aspect of any committed, romantic relationshipor so they hope. in an atmosphere like university or college, its easy to see how students may be tempted with other romantic options, but how many are actually cheating on their partner, and why? According to lorne Campbell, a psychology professor at Western, being surrounded by thousands of friendly faces on a regular basis may be part of the problem. When people make decisions whether to stay or stray from a relationship, its not always influenced by how happy they are, Campbell explains. Sometimes its influenced by perceived alternatives or actual alternatives. To make this clearer, Campbell explains how on Westerns campus alone, there can be 20,000 to 25,000 students walking around on a regular basis. Because there are a lot of men and women around the same age range that are single or moving from relationship to relationship, opportunities can actually present themselves that seem like a good alternative at that time. For fourth-year media, information and technology student Brooke Philips*, cheating is something that has been complicating her relationships for as long as she can remember. it may sound weird, but i feel like cheating is normal to me. its happened so many times in the past, Philips recalls. ive been in a situation where a guy cheated on his girlfriend with me for a very long time, ive been in a situation where i cheated on a boyfriend to a very far extent, ive been in a situation where a boyfriend has cheated on meive been in every situation, really. But Philips isnt alone. Campbell notes that large-scale surveys have shown that approximately 25 per cent of both men and women have cheated on a partner in the past. i think it really came to light for me when i first came to university a few years ago and saw how common it was, especially in residence where all the hookups happen, Philips says. When youre in an atmosphere like that, its easy to slip into the behaviour yourself, especially if youre just starting into your first long-distance relationship. Sterling Anderson, a self-proclaimed notorious cheater and author of Does He Cheat?, argues that cheating is more about yourself than the relationship youre in. Theoretic approach aside, i have to say that it is really all about self-esteem. its not about the circumstance and its not about the other person, its all about how you feel about yourself, Anderson says. if youre a cheater, you need to find a way to raise your self-esteem to a level where you feel comfortable with yourself. So is there a practical way to avoid becoming romantic with someone who cheats? Campbell says we can only look at probabilities. Theres a correlation, but no guarantee that it will actually happen. if you do find yourself in a situation involving cheating, Philips advises you to get to the root of the problem. Gloria Dickie NEWS FEATUrES EDiTor For Kevin Gellar*, it started at age seven. it persisted throughout his late childhood, his pre-teen years, and by high school, he knew something wasnt right. Watching pornography had become more than just something he did for fun, no longer a meaningless habit. instead, he says, it was more like something [...] i could not live without. Gellar, now in his early twenties, began seeing a sexual addictions counsellor four months ago. While he feels his old viewing habits were more or less normal by societal standards, he believes most people arent aware when pornography becomes a full-fledged addiction. in January 2011, New York Magazine published an article regarding the ways in which porn was affecting the libidos of American men. The article posited that with the proliferation of internet pornography, mens libidos were remaining flaccid when it came to real-world sexual interactions. But a person struggling with a pornography addiction isnt merely disinterested in physical encounters, explains Paul lavergne, a sex addiction therapist located in Peterborough. Hesitant to commit to a numerical tipping point that would signal an addiction, lavergne notes addiction is often exhibited through a high tolerance for explicit pornographic images and out-of-control behaviour. There are persistent intrusive thoughts and cravings, and continuing to use despite negative consequences, he says, adding such consequences could be emotional, financial or physical in their relationships. Gellar is no stranger to such problems in his life and relationships. it was definitely something that was coming between my wife and i, he admits. Although it didnt make me think my wife was less beautiful, or [mean] that she couldnt please me sexually, i did have less desire to be intimate with her because i was expressing that energy outside of our marriage. While the ramifications of addiction are easy to understand, it may be less clear how one becomes addicted to pornography in the first place. According to lavergne, addiction often stems from biochemical reactions within the brain. When a person looks at pornography [...] their brain releases certain neuro-chemicals such as serotonin, adrenaline and endorphins, he states, pointing to both male and female orgasms which release a rush of chemicals and give viewers a high. When a man masturbates and has an orgasm, his brain glues to whatever is in front of it, and in this case its the objectworld of pornography. This issue, he observes, is further heightened by developments in technology that have made pornography all the more accessible to young viewers. its available online and on your e-reader and on your computer and on your phone[you] no longer have to seek it out, its right there in your face, says Susan Knabe, a professor in the faculty of information and media studies who specializes in representations of sexuality in the media. Gellar concedes that when it came to his addiction, his iPhone was the biggest problem because it went with him everywhere and nobody would know. Knabe concludes that pornography can also be problematic when it becomes the main avenue of learning about sex. While she reasons this has always been the case to some extent, she says magazines of the 1950s, 60s and 70s objectified women, but didnt tell young men how they should treat those objects, unlike pornography today. it doesnt provide just objectification of women, but step-by-step techniques [on how to treat them] and i think that might be worrying both from the way in which women experience themselves, and the way in which men experience themselves as sexual beings. *Name has been changed to preserve anonymity

There is a plethora of porn at the disposal of anyone savvy enough to hold onto a few bucks, and this leads to the question of whether or not pornography can be considered a viable form of art. While pornography possesses the characteristic of being spread through the media, some separate it from art due to its primal and crude nature. it is clear that there are visual and verbal creations that are widely viewed as being works of art that also have, as at least one of their aims, the sexual stimulation or arousal of the intended receiver through the explicit representation of sexual activity, David Davies, a professor at McGill University, writes. He also notes, Some philosophers, however, have maintained with equal conviction, not only that there are no pornographic artworks, but that there never could be, since art and pornography have, essentially, certain features that are incompatible. This idea that art and pornography are incompatible may be a feature of society today, but could potentially change in the future. Susan Knabe, assistant professor of womens studies and feminist research at Western, takes note of this.
i think that regardless of who we are and whether we watch porn or not, we are familiar with pornography in a way that similar people were not 25 or 30 years ago. it occupies a much bigger part of our visual culture, but also the way we make meaning around sexuality, she says. Simply because of the degree to which the internet makes [porn] really accessible, our culture is actually quite saturated in pornography. While discounting pornography as an actual form of art, Knabe
points out that the saturation of pornographic content in todays world has led to a situation where porn and art are not as separated as in the past. Some of the television programs, like Sin Cities or KinK, or exposs of pornography are part of that. its not really porn, but its actually academic work about porn, or its documentary television about porn, or its feature films about porn, she says. Whether or not pornography is considered a form of art is largely
up to whoever is doing the interpretation. Either way, pornography is becoming an increasingly large part of our culture, which may lead to new, creative ways of representing it. We now are interested in how porn gets made, says Knabe. We are not necessarily interested in watching porn, but we are curious about the whole industry of pornography. its got more traction in our culture, to some extent.

Amber Garratt MANAGiNG EDiTor Everythings just intensified. its like your skin is more sensitiveit feels a lot better. im sure you cant really get to that point sober, says Bianca Moore, a third-year psychology student at Western, about her experience of having sex on MDMA. Using drugs to alter sexual experiences is not a new phenomenon. The practice dates back hundreds of years to love potions that were used as sexual aids made of plants and other substances with psychoactive properties, designed to excite or disorient individuals. Today cocaine and ecstasy are commonly used to enhance sexual experiences as they amplify peoples perceptions, particularly touch. Certain drugs may have specific effectsfor example cocaine is considered by many users to be an aphrodisiac and can delay orgasm and prolong sex, explains Karen Hughes, a professor of behavioural epidemiology and head of violence and nightlife research at liverpool John Moores University. Similarly, ecstasyparticularly MDMAhas become popular as a love drug due to the drugs characteristic of heightening peoples perception of touch. MDMA came onto the drug scene in the 80s and was found to produce sensual and sexual euphoria, but both men and women typically reported that it impeded erections and orgasms. MDMA is an empathogen. it increases feelings of empathy and closeness, so it means people are touchy feely, explains Karen McElrath, a professor in the school of sociology, social policy and social work at Queens University in North ireland. People are more interested in closeness, but they werent necessarily into sexual intercourse. McElrath researched ecstasy users perceptions about sexuality and sexual risk and found that a slight majority of respondents reported that ecstasy was associated with feelings of sensuality or deep emotions rather than sexual desire. Some individuals in the sample, clearly not the majority, used MDMA in sexual ways. Those were people who had partners and they would use as a sexual aid to explore new and different sexual activity together, says McElrath. McElraths research cited that some respondents found ecstasy to decrease inhibitions, enhance emotions and boost their levels of confidence. When you are talking about feelings of sexuality and sensuality versus closeness, it comes down to the pharmacological properties of a drug. Some people reported that they had those feelings towards other individuals, but they couldnt respond physically, males in particular, says McElrath. Clearly there were people that engaged in those behaviours, but some people felt awkward the next day, similar to what we would find with alcohol. McElrath and Hughes both showed concern for people considering using drugs to enhance their sexual experiences, as drug use can reduce the users risk perception. recreational drugs can alter users normal behaviours and may reduce their inhibitions or risk perceptions, says Hughes. This may mean that they engage in sexual activity with someone who they would not normally choose to become intimate with, or they may not stop to think about using a condom to protect them from unwanted pregnancy or sexually transmitted infection. Although Moores experience with mixing MDMA and sex was enjoyable, she warns that may not always be the case. if people are going to have something as intimate as sex, in an altered state, it should be with someone you trust. i think the reason it was fun was because i felt safe and comfortable with the person i was with, says Moore. its not like i couldnt enjoy sex without it. it was just nice that time, but i dont expect to feel that way having sex every time. i suppose its a bit like having a really delicious cake. Sure it was really superb, but it doesnt ruin all other cakes for you.

Looking for something to do this weekend?
Westerns Emergence Queer Film Festival will be screening films at Conron Hall in University College this weekend. We have put in a huge effort to reach out to the larger london community outside of the university, and im really looking forward to the chance to have a dialogue between non-academic and academic communities, says festival organizer Casey Stepaniuk. Stepaniuk hopes to take the festival in a less academic direction than earlier years. i dont think theres one quality that is unique that ties all the films together, but i think thats also a strength. Among the films being screened are Diagnosing Difference, a feature documentary acknowledging salient issues in the transgender community, and Maryam Keshavarzs Circumstance, a film about a lesbian couple in modern day iran. We want films made for queer people to watch, not with a nonqueer audience in mind, Stepaniuk comments. its not that someone who doesnt identify as queer wouldnt or couldnt enjoy these films, since they certainly could but watching media as a queer person when the lens is a heterosexual one is exhausting. Stepaniuk notes that mainstream Hollywood cinema often approaches queer representation in an unhelpful way, and festivals such as this one provide a means for the queer community to discuss issues that concern it. There is great diversity within different factions of the queer community, and thats a good thing, emphasizes Stepaniuk. Brent Holmes

Cheryl Madliger ArTS & liFE EDiTor Maybe because im at a point where im really busy, not sure where ill be living post-graduation, and trying to have as much fun as possible during my last semester without compromising my schoolwork but being single doesnt really bother me. Besides joking about how id love a boyfriend for Valentines Day, i really havent been doing much looking. So when someone suggested me as the lucky editor to go on the annual Gazette blind date, i figured id give it a shot. No pro when it comes to dating, i figured id find some way to embarrass myself. Knowing id be writing about it gave me the comfort of telling myself that id at least have some material to work with that way. Sure enough, i made a few mistakes that are sure enough to provide you with some entertainment. Mistake #1: your car is a pig sty and youre driving i lovingly refer to my moms lender car as the garbage-mobile, but im not sure having to throw a yoga mat, three water bottles and wrappers from a half dozen granola bars into the backseat when i realized i had to drive was the best way to start things off. Solution Play it off. Were all in the same boatbusy students too lazy to really care if their dashboard has
crumbs on it. remind yourself that hes probably happier in a dirty car than on a dirty bus with a bunch of strangers. Mistake #2: you realize your date is not-so-blind Dont mention it and wait for him to do it. This is especially fun if you can remember sleeping over at his house with his little sister and referring to him as a dreamboat, as was the rare case for me. Solution Just admit it so you dont have to be awkward. Maybe leave out the part about your 13-year-old selfs fantasies coming true, but establishing that you actually know each other means youll likely have plenty to talk about. Mistake # 3: you assume you will be able to do the activity planned Unless youre turning 10 and your parents booked you a birthday party, dont assume youll be able to get a bowling lane at Palasad in the middle of the afternoon on a Saturday. Solution Come up with an alternative. Call the other bowling alleys before you drive there, and comment about how lucky it is you have the garbage-mobile to get you around. Mistake #4: dont kick his butt at whatever activity youve decided onat least not right away i threw a strike the first frame we
bowled after assuring him itd been years since id played. i immediately started worrying that id damage his pride by continuing to win, so i ended up stifling my competitive drive and bowling badly instead, then wondering why id do something so silly. Solution Assume if the dates worth dating, hell be okay with getting his butt kicked, at least every once in a while. impress him with how good you are instead of pretending not to be. Mistake #5: an improper ending Not ending the date by getting a phone number, a Facebook add, or at least a talk to you soon kind of sentiment. Besides an awkward hugawkward because it was in the garbage-mobile, not because he hugged methe goodbye was relatively unpromising. Solution Assume hell come looking for you. remind yourself that youre a catch. if your confidence is still crushed, and its Saturday, go to the Ceeps and get it back by dancing it off. All-in-all, a blind date is not so scary. Maybe i didnt woo my date with my charm, bowling skills or good looksim still waiting on that follow-upbut the worst-case scenario is i spent an afternoon not studying. And i got to kick ass at bowling.

How did you feel about being asked to go on a blind date? At first I was somewhat hesitant about the idea, but after thinking it through for a bit the idea was more exciting than anything. Julian Uzielli NEWS EDiTor Courtney Stevenson* never expected to get a sexually transmitted infection. i was pretty shocked, the 24-year-old Western student, who has herpes simplex virus 2, says. its one of those things that you dont think is going to happen to you. i also dont engage in random sex, so im pretty sure that i received it from a partner that i was in a committed relationship with. Stephenson has had HSV-2 for a year and a half. Though she is sure her partner contracted the infection from a previous relationship, he never knew he had it. To this day, im positive that hes never had any outbreaks, which is one of the scary things about herpes simplex 2people can contract it and pass it on without knowing that they ever have it. According to Joanna Cuz, a public health nurse with the Middlesexlondon Health Unit, this type of occurrence is all too common in the 15 to 24 demographic. She speculates education might be one of the main causes. They might not be aware that having no symptoms at all is a symptom. With most STis, its common for people to not experience symptoms, so then theyre not getting tested and theyre continuing to be sexually active with new partners, she says. She says some cases symptoms may never develop, though the infection could still be passed on.

For chlamydia, 80 per cent of females and 50 per cent of males dont know they have it, lisa Kelliher, a health promoter with the MlHU, adds. in addition to the symptoms of STis, there are also social stigmas attached to those with infections. Because of this, many people with STis feel too ashamed or afraid to seek help, especially in regards to HiV, Bonnie Baynham, womens HiV/AiDS community development coordinator with regional HiV/AiDS Connection, explains. Fortunately for Stevenson, stigma has not been a problem. its been difficult, but im a pretty strong person, so im pretty open about it, she says. i tell all my friends about it in hopes that they actually understand, if they ever come into the situation with somebody else. She adds that her infection hasnt had a drastic effect on her dating life. The first person that i had dated absolutely freaked out and went off the map, she says. A little while later, i think he rethought about it, and said, no, i really like you. Maybe i overreacted. And then theres been people who absolutely do not care. There are many options available to those who think they may have contracted an STi. The MlHU offers free, anonymous walk-in testing, as does The options Clinic on Dundas Street. Although at first it may be a little awkward to bring up, its important to talk to your partner before jumping into bed. your limits According to Joshua Poytner, a public health nurse with sexual health promotion at the Middlesexlondon Health Unit, discussing your limits is the top priority. Everyone has different limits to what they want, whether its having sex or just making out and touching or whatever, Poynter says. Talking about these limits first, before you get too far into it, is a really good idea. Birth control it may not be the sexiest topic to bring up, but talking about birth control methods is a lot easier to discuss than what to do if you become pregnant. According to Sexuality and U, a Canadian website that provides information on sexual health, you and your partner should sit down and discuss what the easiest and most effective choice will be for the both of you. StIs After discussing how many partners and past relationships youve both had, getting tested for STis is the best next step. There are a lot of couples we see coming into the clinic before they have sex, Poynter explains. They get their test results, they go home and theyre happy and ready to have fun without worry.
