MavilaVishwanathanNair(born3rdMarch1952)isoneof theseniormostbankersintheIndianBankingIndustry.He currentlyservesastheChairman&ManagingDirector of theUnion Bank of India.EarlierhewastheChairmanand ManagingDirectoroftheDenaBank.

1 EarlyLifeandEducation

M.V.Nair was born on 3rd March 1952, the second eldest of seven siblings. MostofhisschoolingwasinsouthernKarnataka,andhegraduatedfromSt. Aloysius College, Mangalore. Later, Nair attended training workshops in Indian School of Business, Kellogg School of Business and Harvard Business School.

2 Career
2.1 CorporationBank Nair joined Corporation Bank as a probationary officer in 1973. He was identifiedasapromisingprospectforhisbusinessinstinctandtalentearlyon, andwasofferedthechallengetoheadandleadoneofthebiggestbranches oftheBankinthecapitalcityofNewDelhi. Given early successes in the middle management, Nair was entrusted with higher responsibilities which put him on the fast track to the Senior Management. He subsequently went on to head the western and central region of the bank, both of which were the best performing regions of the bankinhistenure. Afterstintsinthefield,Nairwascalledontosetupastrategicbusinessunit (SBU) to boost the much needed fee based income, to position Corporation BankasaleadingplayerintheCorporateBankingarena.NairbuilttheSBU CAPS(CollectionandPaymentServices)fromscratch,settinguptheteamand branching out, launching innovative solutions to corporate customers. The strategic vision was converted into reality with the adoption of hightech solutions, enhancing the visibility in corporate circles, enabling the bank to

forge strong relationships with leading Corporates. The success of CAPS definedtheemergenceofCorporationBankasasuccessfulcorporatebankin the Indian banking industry. Business during this stint i.e from 199298 zoomedfromRs450crstoRs53450crs(US$154mntoUS$13531mn)with anincreaseinrevenuebasefromRs0.51crstoRs58.90crs(UD$0.17mnto US$14.91mn). NairalsoheadedvariousdepartmentsatthecorporateofficeincludingCAPS, HumanResources(HR),andRiskManagement. HewassubsequentlyelevatedtoExecutiveDirectorofDenaBank.

2.2 DenaBank(20042006)

Nair was promoted as Executive Director to Dena Bank when the bank was facing a severe challenge on the nonperforming assets (NPA) front. He subsequently served as chairman and was with the bank for 2 years. Dena Bank is today one of the most successful turnaround stories in the Indian bankingindustry.

2.3 UnionBank(2006Present)

Nair joined Union Bank of India as Chairman and Managing Director. He is credited with a number of initiatives that have taken the bank to historic heights. NavNirmanIn2006,NairinitiatedProjectNavNirman,transforming thebankintoacustomercentricmarketingorganizationbyleveraging technology,changingprocessesandempoweringpeople. CBS(CoreBankingSolutions)UnderNairsleadership,UnionBankwas the first public sector bank which achieved 100% CBS i.e. fully computerizingallbranchesinthebank Overseas Banking in 2007, Union Bank began its foray into the internationalscenebyopeningitsfirstoverseasbranch,inHongKong. Subsequently,thebankhasopenedrepresentativeofficesinAbuDhabi, Dubai,Beijing,Shanghai,SydneyandLondon.

Human Resources: Recognizing HR as a critical element, Nair emphasizedonlargescalerecruitment,bringingdowntheaverageage of employees and reskilling the frontline staff through Dale Carnegie Institute. He introduced fasttrack career progression, an inhouse management development programme a precursor for succession planning BrandBuildingin2008,brandbuildingexercisewasinitiatedbyNair. Thebankslogowaschangedandasuccessfuladvertisingcampaignwas launched. This resulted in the banks brand value increasing by 148% (2009). Increase in Business When Nair joined Union Bank of India in 2006, thebanksbusinesswasRs.1,28,700crs(US$29.61bn).AsofSept30, 2010thebankstotalbusinesswasoverRs.3,05,000crs(US$68.23bn). JointVentures:TheBankenteredintoLifeInsurancebusinessthrough jointventurewithBankofIndiaandDaiIchiMutualLifeInsuranceCorp, Japan. The company, Star Union Daiichi Life Insurance Co. Ltd. commencedoperationsinFeb,2009.TheBankhasalsoenteredintoa JV with KBC Asset Management, Belgium and setup a Asset ManagementCompany.TheAMCisexpectedtocommenceoperations inJanuary2011.

CorporateSocialResponsibility
During his tenure as Chairman ofthe Indian Banks Association, Mr. Nair worked tirelesslyto ensure thatbanks work out a strategy to facilitate branchless banking in villages. Passionate about financial inclusion, he has relentlesslypushedforincreaseinthenumberofbusinesscorrespondentsto penetratebankingservicesinthehinterland. Under Nairs leadership, some of the CSR activities undertaken by the Bank were: Adoption of 103 villages in 4 different States for comprehensive development, mainly working as catalyst in bringing initiatives from GovernmentandDevelopmentagencies.Thebankalsosupplemented developmenteffortsthroughfundingdevelopmentprojectslikeClean energy,drinkingwaterfacility,improvementofruralschools,etc.

Bankadopted103girlchildrenineachofthesevillageswhoareinthe primary school and has set aside facilities for their upbringing and overallmaintenancetilltheypassoutofHighSchool. The Bank has actively supported Cancer patients Aids Association, Mumbaiforthelast10yearsandhassupportedtheannualevents forfundraisingKhazana. TheBanksupportedtheCochinChildFoundationwithagrantofRs6 lacs for carrying out various initiatives for improving the quality of lifeofchildren. The bank also supported Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata SamitipopularlyknownforJaipurFootwithagrantofRs.10lacs. HewasappointedChairman,IndianBanksAssociation(IBA)for20092010. During this period, as Chairman of the wage negotiation committee, IBA successfullyconcludedthelongpendingbipartitesettlementwiththejoint forumofunions.

3 PersonalLife
M.V.Nair married his wife Indu, on 20th October, 1983. They have one daughter,Vidhyaandoneson,Aditya.Bothareengineers.
