Hard to Believe... According to a recent National Academy of Sciences report, we are now altering the chemical content of
the Earth’s entire atmosphere 10 to 100 times faster than its natural rate of change — just last year there was a 3.1% jump
in CO2 emissions from the United States.

What is Global Warming?
Global warming is often used interchangeably with the
terms “greenhouse effect” and “climate change.” Global
warming refers to the buildup of gases in the atmosphere
that trap the sun’s heat, causing changes in weather
patterns on a global scale. The greenhouse gas that has
caused the most concern is carbon dioxide (CO2).
If the greenhouse gases in our atmosphere double, the
earth's temperature could increase 1.5 to 4.5 degrees by
the year 2050. The effects of global warming are uncertain,
but they can include disruption of global weather patterns
and ecosystems, flooding, severe storms, and droughts.
With new rainfall patterns and temperatures, many plant
species will not be able to grow, and the animals that
depend on them may become extinct.
How Can We Reduce Global Warming by Using CFLs?
The primary cause of man-made CO2 emissions is the
result of burning fossil fuels. Most of the electricity we use
in our homes comes from burning coal, natural gas, and oil.
We can help reduce global warming by reducing the elec-
tricity demand by using Compact Fluorescent Lamps. CFLs
only use about a quarter of the electricity to provide the
same amount of soft white light as standard incandescent
bulbs. Also, because CFLs last up to 10 times longer, there
is much less waste, in addition to saving up to 75% on
one’s lighting bill.
Less electricity means less fossil fuel burning, less pollution,
and fewer greenhouse gases!

We’ve used round numbers to make the math simple
for younger students. Feel free to change them slightly to
increase the difficulty for your grade level. The estimates
can vary depending on a number of factors (e.g. source

 Six Easy Steps to a Successful Fundraiser
This STEP-BY-STEP Guide provides all the information you will need.
You can run the campaign year-round, but work back from
when you will want the bulbs delivered (e.g. for Earth Day in
April or at the end of the school year). Establish a beginning
and an end for your campaign. The entire program takes no
more than 15 weeks from start to finish.
An important date to keep in mind is Earth Day 2002. The
top selling class or group by April 22, 2002 will receive a
$500 cash bonus.
STEP 1: Recruit participants for the fundraiser [1-2 weeks]
Recruit groups (e.g. PTA, band, clubs) and/or teachers
to participate in the fundraiser. Distribute copies of the
material to interested group leaders and teachers. Sample
bulbs can be purchased for $6, but should be ordered early.
STEP 2: Teach the advantages of CFLs [1 week]
Educate the students/group members about the environ-
mental and economic advantages of CFLs. You can organize
a class, assembly or special meeting about energy conserva-
tion. At a minimum, teachers and group leaders should review
the Order Form and CFL Fact Sheet with their participants.
Make sure to underscore that every CFL sold earns $3
towards your fundraising goal, plus makes a “real world”
contribution to avoiding global climate change and supports
the Earth Day Education Fund.
STEP 3: SELL, SELL, SELL CFLs [2-3 weeks]
Each of the participating group leaders and teachers
should duplicate the CFL fact sheet and order form for their
students. Remind them that checks are made payable to the
school or organization. Set sales goals and initiate contests
between classrooms and/or school groups (e.g. the
basketball team vs. the hockey team) to help motivate and
maximize sales. You could give a special party or a reward
for the group that sells the most light bulbs or for any
student who sells four or more bulbs. And don’t forget to
tell your students that the group that sells the most bulbs
nationwide by Earth Day 2002 will win $500 cash as an
extra bonus.
Think of ways to drive enthusiasm. Approach entities
capable of ordering a number of bulbs (your school, library,
police station, apartment complexes, etc.) Don’t forget you’ll
be saving them money!
STEP 4: Collect and compile your sales [1 week]
Collect the completed student order forms and correspon-
ding checks made payable to the school/organization. Each
teacher or group leader then compiles the orders into a single
group summary order by placing each student’s name and
his or her totals onto a
clean order form. For more

each check agrees with the
number of bulbs ordered.

over to the Earth Day
Coordinator. Be sure to
keep the original order
forms so you can properly
distribute the bulbs when
they arrive.
STEP 5: Place your order [1-2 weeks]
The Coordinator then combines all the teacher and group
order forms into one summary order, using additional sheets
as necessary. List each class or group name along with the
total bulbs sold and total corresponding dollar amount (from
the total line of the teacher’s summary).
Mark the Earth Day Coordinator box and complete the
section at the bottom of the form. Please estimate how
many classes/groups and individuals participated.
Multiply the number of bulbs ordered by $6 to determine
the total payment due. Deposit all student checks made
payable to your school/organization and secure an institution-
al check made payable to the “Earth Day Education Fund” for
$6 times the total number of bulbs ordered. Mail the com-
pleted school summary order and corresponding check to:

order. Be sure to keep the teachers’ orders and a copy of

STEP 6: Distribute the bulbs [6 weeks]
The completed orders will be shipped from the distributor
directly to your school in approximately four to six weeks.
Distribute the appropriate number of bulbs back to the
teachers and group leaders who then distribute them to the
students.

Suggestions for “adding up” your own savings:
• Use the information above or download a blank chart from
www.earthdayny.org/brightlights and have your class/group
calculate the watts saved and CO2 avoided.
• Produce an energy audit questionnaire to be completed at
home (e.g. how many light bulbs are used, at what wattage,
how long the lights are left on). Using these numbers calcu-
late the exact savings per household.
Show the impact we can have together:
Calculate the average amount of CO2 saved by replacing
incandescent bulbs with a family pack of CFLs. Use this
average, then decide on an average number of light bulbs
per household. You can pick a number or ask your students
to count the bulbs in their own home and use your class
average. Have them calculate the savings in their own
home, then calculate the savings for your whole class, your
school, your community, state and the whole country. Use
these numbers to demonstrate how the savings add up and
what a difference we can make together.
