History Reliance Group

The Reliance Group founded by lt. Dhirubhai H. Ambani is India's largest private sector enterprise, with businesses in the energy and materials value chain. Group's annual revenues are in excess of US$ 58 billion. The flagship company, Reliance Industries Limited, is a Fortune Global 500 company and is the largest private sector company in India. Backward vertical integration has been the cornerstone of the evolution and growth of Reliance. Starting with textiles in the late seventies, Reliance pursued a strategy of backward vertical integration - in polyester, fibre intermediates, plastics, petrochemicals, petroleum refining and oil and gas exploration and production - to be fully integrated along the materials and energy value chain. The Group's activities span exploration and production of oil and gas, petroleum refining and marketing, petrochemicals (polyester, fibre intermediates, plastics and chemicals), textiles, retail, infotel and special economic zones. Reliance enjoys global leadership in its businesses, being the largest polyester yarn and fibre producer in the world and among the top five to ten producers in the world in major petrochemical products. Major Group Companies are Reliance Industries Limited, including its subsidiaries and Reliance Industrial Infrastructure Limited.

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL)


Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is an Indian conglomerate company headquartered in Mumbai, India. The company operates through three business segments: petrochemicals,

refining, and oil and gas, other segment of the company includes textile, retail business, special economic zone (SEZ) development and telecom/broadband business. RIL is the largest publicly traded company in India by market capitalization and second-largest public corporation in India when ranked by revenue. The company is listed on Fortune Global 500 and Forbes Global 2000.

Prominence
In September 2008 Reliance Industries was the only Indian firm featured in the Forbes's list of "world's 100 most respected companies". In 2010 it stood at 13th position in the Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings.

Products & Brands


The Company expanded into textiles in 1975. Since its initial public offering in 1977, the Company has expanded rapidly and integrated backwards into other industry sectors, most notably the production of petrochemicals and the refining of crude oil. The Company from time to time seeks to further diversify into other industries. The Company now has operations that span from the exploration and production of oil and gas to the manufacture of petroleum products, polyester products, polyester intermediates, plastics, polymer intermediates, chemicals and synthetic textiles and fabrics. The Company's major products and brands, from oil and gas to textiles are tightly integrated and benefit from synergies across the Company. Central to the Company's operations is its vertical backward integration strategy; raw materials such as PTA, MEG, ethylene, propylene and normal paraffin that were previously imported at a higher cost and subject to import duties are now sourced from within the Company. This has had a positive effect on the Company's operating margins and interest costs and decreased the Company's exposure to the cyclicality of markets and raw material prices. The Company believes that this strategy is also important in maintaining a domestic market leadership position in its major product lines and in providing a competitive advantage. Manufacturing Facilities

Reliance Industries Limited operates world-class manufacturing facilities across the country at Allahabad, Barabanki, Dahej, Hazira, Hoshiarpur, Jamnagar, Nagothane, Nagpur, Naroda, Patalganga, Silvassa and Vadodara.

Allahabad Manufacturing Division is located in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. It is equipped with batch polymerization and continuous polymerization facilities. Barabanki Manufacturing Division is located near Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. It manufactures Black Fibre. Dahej Manufacturing Division is located near Bharuch, Gujarat. It comprises of an ethane / propane recovery unit, a gas cracker, a caustic chlorine plant and 4 downstream plants, which manufacture polymers and fibre intermediates.

Hoshiarpur Manufacturing Division is located in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. It manufactures a wide range of PSF, PFF, POY and polyester chips. Hazira Manufacturing Division is located near Surat, Gujarat. It comprises of a Naptha cracker feeding downstream fibre intermediates, plastics and polyester plants. Jamnagar Manufacturing Division is located near Jamnagar. It comprises of a petroleum refineries and associated petrochemical plants. The refineries are equipped to refine various types of crude oil (sour crude, sweet crude or a mixture of both) and manufactures various grades of fuel from motor gasoline to Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). The petrochemicals plants produces plastics and fibre intermediates.

Nagothane Manufacturing Division is located in Raigad, Maharashtra. It comprises of an ethane and propane gas cracker and five downstream plants for the manufacture of polymers, fibre intermediates and chemicals.

Nagpur Manufacturing Division is located in Nagpur, Maharashtra. It manufactures polyester filament yarn, dope-dyed specialty products of different ranges, fully drawn yarn and polyester chips.

Naroda Manufacturing Division is located near Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is RILs first manufacturing facility. This synthetic textiles and fabrics manufacturing facility manufactures and markets woven and knitted fabrics for home textiles, synthetic and worsted suiting and shirting, ready to wear garments and automotive fabrics.

Patalganga Manufacturing Division is located near Mumbai, Maharashtra. It comprises of polyester, fibre intermediates and linear alklyl benzene manufacturing plants. Silvassa Manufacturing Division is located in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. It manufactures a wide range of specialty products such as Recron Stretch, Linen Like, Melange, Thick-n-thin and Bi-shrinkage yarns.

Vadodara Manufacturing Division is located in Vadodara, Gujarat. It comprises of a Naptha cracker and 15 downstream plants for the manufacture of polymers, fibres, fibre intermediates and chemicals.

Each of these complexes has world class manufacturing facilities.

Businesses Major subsidiaries and associates

Reliance Life Sciences participates in medical, plant and industrial biotechnology opportunities. Specifically, these relate to biopharmaceuticals, pharmaceuticals, clinical research services, regenerative medicine, molecular medicine, novel therapeutics, biofuels, plant biotechnology, and industrial biotechnology.

Reliance Institute of Life Sciences (Rils), established by Dhirubhai Ambani Foundation, is an institution of higher education in various fields of life sciences and related technologies.

Reliance Logistics (P) Limited is a single-window solutions provider for transportation, distribution, warehousing, logistics, and supply chain needs, supported by in-house state of the art telematics and telemetry solutions.

Reliance Clinical Research Services (RCRS), a contract research organization (CRO) and wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Life Sciences, has been set up to provide clinical research services to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies.

Reliance Solar, the solar energy initiative of Reliance, aims to bring solar energy systems and solutions primarily to remote and rural areas and bring about a transformation in the quality of life.

Relicord is a stem-cell banking service controlled by Reliance Industries. Infotel Broadband is a broadband service provider which gained 4G licensees for operating across India, now it is wholly owned by RIL for 4,800 crore (US$1.06 billion).

Reliance Industrial Infrastructure Limited


Reliance Industrial Infrastructure Limited (RIIL) was incorporated in September 1988 as Chembur Patalganga Pipelines Limited, with the main objective being to build and operate cross-country pipelines for transporting petroleum products. The company's name was subsequently changed to CPPL Limited in September 1992, and thereafter to its present name, Reliance Industrial Infrastructure Limited, in March 1994. It has been promoted by Mr. Satyapal Jain and his associates. The company set up a 200-millimetre diameter twin pipeline system that connects the Bharat Petroleum refinery at Mahul, Maharashtra, to Reliance's petrochemical complex at Patalaganga, Maharashtra. The pipeline carries petroleum products including naptha and kerosene. It has commissioned facilities like the supervisory control and data acquisition system and the cathodic protection system, a jackwell at River Tapi, and a raw water pipeline system at Hazira. The infrastructure company constructed a 70,000 kilolitre petrochemical product storage and distribution terminal at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) Area in Maharashtra. RIIL is mainly engaged in the business of setting up and operating industrial infrastructure. The company is also engaged in related activities involving leasing and providing services connected with computer software and data processing.

Reliance retail
Reliance Retail is the retail business wing of the Reliance business. Many brands like Reliance Fresh, Reliance Footprint, Reliance Time Out, Reliance Digital Store, Reliance Wellness, Reliance Trendz, Reliance Autozone, Reliance Super, Reliance Mart, Reliance iStore, Reliance Home Kitchens, Reliance Market (Cash n Carry) and Reliance Jewel come under the Reliance Retail brand.

Environmental record
Reliance Industry is the world's largest polyester producer and as a result one of the largest producers of polyester waste in the world. In order to deal with this large amount of waste, they had to create a way to recycle the waste. They operate the largest polyester recycling center that uses the polyester waste as a filling and stuffing. They developed an innovative recycling process resulting in an award in 'Team Excellence'. Reliance owns world's largest refinery in Jamnagar which happens to be "zero discharge" refinery. Effluent Treatment Plants based on worlds best available technology processes the waste release and converts waste in to usable product. Reliance has also planted more than 5 million trees around this refinery in order to reduce the carbon foot print.

Awards and recognition


Jamnagar Manufacturing Division was conferred the Golden Peacock Award for Occupational Health & Safety - 2007 by Institute of Directors. Dahej Manufacturing Division received BSC 5-Star rating from British Safety Council, UK. Jamnagar Refinery was adjudged the winner of the Golden Peacock National Training Award -2007. For the first time ever, globally, a petrochemical company bagged the Deming Prize for Management Quality. The Quality Control Award for Operations Business Unit 2007 was awarded to the Hazira Manufacturing Division for Outstanding Performance by Practicing Total Quality Management.

Lean Six sigma project on Reducing retention time of caustic soda lye tankers at Jamnagar won then1st prize in the national level competition held by Indian Statistical Institute (ISI).

Hazira Manufacturing Division won the Golden Peacock Innovation Award - 2007 for its Cyclohexane Recovery Process. Hazira Manufacturing Division won the Golden Peacock Global Award for Corporate Social Responsibility - 2008.
