: AS101 SOFT SKILLS : 15 WEEKS : 2

: NONE

SOFT SKILLS covers basic knowledge and skills in soft skills. The course provides exposure and experience for personality development, communication skills, management, leadership, writing and appreciation of professional ethics. This course will develop proactive spirit and attitude in students thus giving confidence to become excellent and charismatic individuals.

LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. portray positive internal and external personality traits during presentation and in both personal and professional life 2. apply effective communication skills in various verbal and non-verbal forms of communication at workplace, in meetings and interviews. 3. practise management skills by applying management techniques effectively in handling project given. 4. 5. enhance effective leadership skills in conducting a group project. demonstrate effective writing skills in producing proper types of reports, letters and curriculum vitae to be applied in future working environment. 6. apply professional work ethics consisting of protocol and ettiquette, accountability and integrity during group presentation, and write reports individually based on materials given on environmental awareness and the aspect of safety and health to be applied in real life situation.

1.0 PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT This topic reveals the knowledge of personality development that includes self-image and character, critical and creative thinking, emotions and self-development, positive values and sexual aspect, spiritual and social. 2.0 COMMUNICATION SKILLS his t This topic provides knowledge and experience for the students in order to communicate effectively, including listening skills, presentation, public speaking, interviews, meetings and consultation. 3.0 MANAGEMENT SKILLS This topic introduces students to problem solving, time management, customer service and event management. 4.0 LEADERSHIP SKILLS This topic allows students to master the skills of planning, implementing, coaching, monitoring, evaluating, team building and decision making. 5.0 WRITING SKILLS This topic introduces students to the procedures, methods and formats of producing reports, official letters and 'Curriculum Vitae'

Participants are asked to choose an animal that astonishes them. Draw and list down the special features. All drawings will be pasted on participants chests. Participant is required to interact with each other and find as many members with similarities in his/her group. Next each group is asked to discuss and decide where they will be placed on an island. Groups are to discuss on how the animals are going to live together in harmony. All groups will present their work. Facilitators will 'process' the activities.

Activity 5: Lectures, role play, simulations and demonstrations


Each group forms a circle and gets a pair who is standing opposite to each other. A participant from each pair will look at the graphics shown by the facilitators and need to examine/scrutinize and remember the features of the figure. Students will return to their groups and give oral instructions simultaneously to the pair. Their partners will draw the figure based on verbal instructions given without asking questions within the allocated time. Facilitator shows the actual figures to all groups in order for them to make comparisons. Facilitators ask for comments / feedback from students about the activities carried out.

Conclusion:

Verbal and non-verbal communication Factors of effective communication; delivery and receipt of information, interruption, language, media, distance, strategy and timing, reliability and terminology. Each student is given a topic for public speaking.

Each student will deliver a speech/give a public speaking for 4 minutes. Number of participants is 20, including the upcoming weeks. For Activity 6, a student will be selected to be the master of ceremony (MC). Once finished, the facilitator will explain the method of interview.

Each student will deliver a speech/ make public speaking for four minutes Number of participants is 20. Upon completion, get feedback from students about public speaking. Each group is given a task that requires all members to obtain information on an issue e.g the price of expensive food in the canteen and a different location within the time specified. Tell students that they need to complete the task in groups and will be monitored by a facilitator. Each group will present these tasks. Facilitator to create competition between groups. Get feedback and make conclusions about accountability and integrity.
