SECTION V EQUIPMENT COOLING SYSTEM

5-1.

PURPOSE.

5-2. The equipment cooling s y s t e m is a s p e c i a l l y designed w a t e r - g l y c o l s y s t e m which p r o v i d e s a coolant f o r five coldplates ( t h r e e t e l e m e t r y r-f packages and two C-band t r a n s p o n d e r s ) . It a l s o p r o v i d e s a continuous flow of a i r in the c r e w c o m p a r t m e n t f o r c o m p a r t m e n t cooling during ground o p e r a t i o n s and d u r i n g the initial boost phase of the flight. 5-3. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION. (See figure 5-1. )

5-4. The complete cooling s y s t e m f o r boilerplate 15 i s located i n the c o m m a n d module. The m a j o r components of the s y s t e m a r e the supply tank, coolant pump, c o l d p l a t e s , h e a t e x c h a n g e r with fan, a c c u m u l a t o r , t h e r m a l c o n t r o l valve, and t e m p e r a t u r e and p r e s s u r e transducers. 5-5. PRINCIPLES O F OPERATION. (See f i g u r e 5-2. )

5-6. OPERATION DURING MISSION. Coolant flow through the equipment cooling s y s t e m i s m a i n t a i n e d by the pump a s s e m b l y . The 250-pound capacity w a t e r - g l y c o l tank o p e r a t e s i n a standby condition to supply l o w - t e m p e r a t u r e coolant, when r e q u i r e d , through the t h e r m a l c o n t r o l valve into the i n s t r u m e n t a t i o n cooling s y s t e m . The t h e r m a l c o n t r o l valve is a n autom a t i c b y p a s s valve which r e g u l a t e s the flow of coolant out of the tank into the c l o s e d cooling c i r c u i t . The t h e r m a l c o n t r o l valve i s set to c o n t r o l the s y s t e m t e m p e r a t u r e a t 40*5"F f o r any i n l e t t e m p e r a t u r e e n c o u n t e r e d during the m i s s i o n . The coolant continues f r o m the t h e r m a l c o n t r o l valve to the coldplates of modulation packages A, B, and C a n d C-band t r a n s p o n d e r s 1 and 2. The coldplates a r e connected i n s e r i e s . The h e a t e x c h a n g e r r e c e i v e s the fluid f r o m the coldplates and r e m o v e s the a m b i e n t a i r h e a t load given off by the R&D i n s t r u m e n t s . Ambient a i r is c i r c u l a t e d by the f a n a r o u n d the coiled tubing of the h e a t e x c h a n g e r f o r c r e w c o m p a r t m e n t cooling.
5 - 7 . E l e c t r i c a l power f o r equipment cooling s y s t e m o p e r a t i o n i s supplied by the m a i n b a t t e r i e s .
