Answer all the questions. Marks for the questions are shown on the margin. Use of steam table, supplied with the question paper, is permitted. Write your Section No. (1, 2,3 or 4) on the top right of the cover page of your answer script.

1. A piston/cylinder arrangement has a linear spring and the outside atmosphere acting on the piston, as shown in the figure. It contains water at 30 bar, 400oC with the volume being 0.1 m3. If the piston is at the bottom, the spring exerts a force such that a pressure of 2 bar inside is required to balance the forces. The system now cools until the pressure reaches 10 bar. Find the heat transfer for the process. Neglect the weight of the piston. Draw the process on the P-v diagram. [12+3=15]

2. (i) An iron block of unknown mass at 85oC and having a density of 7840 kg/m3, specific heat, cp= 0.45 kJ/kg-K is dropped into an insulated tank containing 20 litres of water at 20oC having density 1000 kg/m3 and specific heat cp=4.2 kJ/kg-K. At the same time, a paddle wheel driven by a 200 W motor is activated to stir the water. Thermal equilibrium is established after 10 minutes with a final temperature of 25oC. (a) Determine the mass of the iron block (b) Find the entropy generation during the process. (ii) Find the work produced per unit mass for a gas flowing steadily through a stationary device and undergoing a reversible adiabatic process 1-2-3 as shown in the figure. [5+5+5=15]

3. A rigid tank initially contains 0.5 kg of steam at 8 bar and 300oC and is connected through an insulated valve to a steam supply line that is capable of supplying of steam at a constant condition of 14 bar and 300oC. The valve is opened so that steam flows slowly into the tank until the pressure and temperature inside are 12 bar and 300oC. Identifying a suitable control volume, write down the mass and energy conservation equations. Determine the final mass inside the tank and the amount of heat transfer during the filling process. Make appropriate assumptions with justifications. [8+3+4=15] 4. Consider a well-insulated horizontal rigid cylinder divided into two compartments by a copper piston that is free to move but does not allow either gas to leak into the other side. Initially, one side of the piston contains 1 m3 of N2 gas at 500 kPa and 80oC while the other side contains 1 m3 of He gas at 500 kPa and 25oC. Now thermal equilibrium is established in the cylinder because of heat transfer through the piston. Determine : (a) the final temperature in the cylinder (in oC) (b) the wasted work potential (lost work), in kJ, during this process. What would your answer be for part (a) if the piston were not free to move? Given, ambient temperature = 25oC. RN2 = 0.2968 kJ/kg-K, cv,N2 = 0.743 kJ/kg-K; molar mass of He = 4 kg/kmol and cv,He = 3.116 kJ/kg-K; Ru=8.314 kJ/kmol K. Assume the energy stored in the cylinder and the piston to be negligible.
