Gary Steier, of Trucksville, a part-time Dallas High School football coach, airs his concerns about the firing of head coach Ted Jackson at a Dallas School Board work session Monday night.
District has new head football coach and tentative new high school schedule.

A Back Mountain resident recently sent plenty of love to the furry friends who live at the SPCA of Luzerne County. Melissa Berti, of Dallas, celebrated her 40th birthday with a bang, but asked for donations to the local animal shelter instead of gifts to make the celebration extra special. Ive always loved animals, said Berti. Ive been fundraising for the SPCA for over 20 years. Guests brought bags of dog food, boxes of cleaning supplies and cards with monetary donations to Bertis birthday bash on Feb. 4 at the Yalick Farms Clubhouse in Dallas Township. The decked-out pink fete featured feather boas for a $5 donation and a poster of some of the animals up for adoption at the shelter. Personally, this is the first time Ive ever seen someone do something like this, said Cary Moran, education and volunteer director at the SPCA of Luzerne County. Moran was on standby to collect the donated items and tell guests more about the shelters needs and how the gifts helped. This helps tremendously with outreach, said Moran. It really shows that people care - it means a lot that people care this much. Moran said there are currently between 75 and 100 animals at the shelter. Despite the economy, she reported the organization was able to keep its head above water last year. But when the economys down, our bills go up, too, she said. That makes things more imperative. Local auctioneer Steve Traver, a guest of Bertis, thought the donations were a great idea. Melissas birthdays are always a big deal, he said. What a great idea. Weve got eight or nine cats and
Melissa Berti thanks all who donated to the SPCA at her 40th birthday party at Yalick Farms.
I have a very, very, very large group of friends and theyre so generous with their gifts.

Big changes are in store for the Dallas School District for the 2012-2013 school year, including the appointment of a new head football coach and a tentative new high school schedule. Long-time Dallas High School football coach Ted Jackson had his career ended Monday night when the school board voted 7-2 to hire Robert Zaruta as the head coach for the 2012-2013 season. School board members Dr. Bruce Goeringer and Fred Parry sided with parents and students to keep Jackson as head coach. Board members Dr. Richard Coslett, Charles Preece, Maureen Matiska, Catherine Wega, Colleen Slocum, Larry Schuler and Karen Kyle voted to appoint Zaruta. This administration is the only check and balances, Goeringer said. Let the man finish what he started. Parry said he first voted not to renew Jacksons employment as coach, but after listening to testimony presented at a due proc- See ERA, Page 10
ess hearing and to students, he felt just cause for not renewing Jacksons contract was not provided. We are making a big mistake, Parry said. A standing-room only crowd of parents and students filled the meeting room in support of Jackson. Trucksville resident Jim Wisnieski said he is aware of players who had family issues and Jackson would lend his ear. Coach Jackson is a good coach, he said. I ask you to remove the politics and personal biases when making this decision to retain Coach Jackson. While several parents and football players took turns at the podium to express concerns and support of Jackson, Superintendent Frank Galicki kept his head down and thumbed through papers in a three-ring binder. Dallas resident Nick Zapoticky called him out. I am listening to people coming up here, who you are suppose to represent. Many of you dont have the decency to pick your head up and watch and listen, he said. I have a problem with that. Zapoticky said the opportunity to retain the coach is not
horses its what we do. Berti said shes grateful her friends came out to wholeheartedly support her cause while also having a great time in her honor. I have a very, very, very large group of friends and theyre so generous with their gifts, she said. But to A poster set up in the foyer at the Yalick Farms Clubhouse tell you the truth, I dont shows animals available for adoption at the SPCA. need anything except their friendship. This is a much more worthy cause. The party wasnt all about the guests good deeds a cocktail hour started the Fierce, Fabulous and 40themed gala, which then turned into dinner followed by three hours of what Berti called booty-shakin tunes for the crowd to enjoy. Im thrilled (to be 40), said Berti. Im more excited about this because Ive been saving for this party for years, and I get to do this (fundraiser).

Supervisors told residents Tuesday that the Williams Gas Co. will replace part of the Transco interstate natural gas pipeline this spring. Township officials received a notice that Williams will replace approximately 1,844 feet of the 24-inch Leidy A pipeline, which runs near and around Hildebrandt Road. The project is located on .42 acres of wetlands. Supervisor Liz Martin said she is not aware of any other details about the project, but said the supervisors do have questions for the company. Supervisors do not expect the project to hinder traffic on See GAS, Page 10

Township officials also received a notification from the state Department of Environmental Protection about the pipeline project of another company, Chief Gathering LLC. The notification stated Chief is amending its application for the 30-mile Wyoming Natural Gas Pipeline. Supervisors adopted an updated comprehensive plan Wednesday evening and discussed safety issues regarding the Back Mountain Trail. After several years of work from consulting firms and the planning commission, the board of supervisors adopted a final version of the townships com-
prehensive plan. The townships first comprehensive plan was created in 1974, and state law suggests plans be updated every 10 years. The plan, developed by the Harrisburg-based company Gannet Flemming, includes updates to township ordinances, expanding the business district along Route 309, promoting conservation of water and forestry, expanding parks and recreational space, finding alternate modes
of public transportation and improving on emergency responder services. The townships comprehensive plan offers a detailed view into the townships population density, land usage, economic outlook and public services to determine whether these areas are being utilized to benefit residents. Supervisor Jeff Box publicly thanked those who helped develop and strengthen the plan,
and said it was a big night for the township as the plan has been in the works for several years. In other news, the board discussed potential ways to better pinpoint locations along the Back Mountain Trail in the event of emergencies. Trucksville Fire Chief Bill Eck said there have been several emergency situations along the trail during which the victims could not properly identify their
location. The board, as per a suggestion from the Trucksville Volunteer Fire Department, said the trail should be color-coded every so many feet so travelers can let emergency crews know where they are on the trail. Mark Albrecht of the Anthracite Scenic Trails Association strongly disagreed with the boards suggestion, and said the organization cannot color-code the trail without permission
from landowners permission. He also said there arent enough colors to mark the whole trail, the effort would be too costly and it would not look desirable on the trail. Public safety trumps that, said Supervisor Shirley Moyer. The board and Albrecht agreed to negotiate on ways the trails association can create effective mile-markers for the upSee PLAN, Page 10

Going to Ireland with her aunt shaped the rest of 26-yearold Meghan Davis life. Now she has the opportunity to do the same for another young family member. Davis recently won the Philadelphia Donegal Associations Mary from Dungloe contest for 2012. The contest is held all over the world and sends young women to a pageant in Dungloe, County Donegal in Ireland to determine who will be crowned the 2012 Mary from Dungloe. The weeklong festival features performers from all over the world among activities and events. Davis aunt won the contest in 1990 when her niece, formerly of Dallas, was just 4 years old. Davis joined her aunt, Julianne Monahan, and several other family members on the trip to Ireland. When I went, I saw all these harpists on the street, performing and playing, she said. Having been only 4 years old, and I knew what I wanted to do, Id say it was a pretty neat experience. Seeing the musicians inspired Davis to pursue a career in playing harp and singing. Shes taken harp lessons since she was 9 years old and even took lessons every other week in New York City to continue her passion. After graduating from Wyoming Seminary, Davis enrolled at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where she studied vocal and harp performance. She eventually earned her masters degree in vocal performance from the Boyer College of Music at Temple University in Philadelphia, and she now works as a freelance har-
pist around the Philadelphia area and in northeastern Pennsylvania. Im not sure I would have (studied the harp) if I hadnt gone to Ireland, said Davis, who currently lives in Philadelphia. She stumbled upon the Philadelphia Donegal Association while looking for places to play the harp, and she found the Mary from Dungloe contest. I was still in age bracket, so I decided to throw in an application, she said. It was my first pageant ever, and I was one of seven finalists. Ironically, there was no talent portion for the Philadelphia contest, but I had to do an interview in front of judges. Davis didnt expect to win the competition. The rules state contestants must have an Irish background and be between the ages of 18 and 27. The application asks contestants to list their hobbies and things they like about themselves. It was kind of surreal, like when they put the sash and the crown on me, she said. I never understood why (winners of pageants) cry when they win, but the emotion is so overwhelming; I could see how it happens. Now Davis is excited about the world competition, which will be held July 28 through Aug. 6 this year. From what I hear, the contestants are really treated like rock stars, and theyre in the newspaper every single day, said Davis. Shes spoken with her family about the trip, and she hopes to take along some family memSee LIFE, Page 10

In 1991, The Dallas Post wrote about a Phantom Valentiner who posted red Valentine hearts on doors of Back Mountain businesses. Twenty-one years later, the secret Valentiner has confessed.

Maine was noticed in 1976. Ever since then, the city has been adorned in pink paper hearts on Valentines Day. Similar efforts have been made in Montpelier, Vt.; Boulder, Colo.; and in Rhode Island. Hand told her family about the Valentine Phantom, and touched on bringing the idea back home. My husband thought I was crazy, which was kind of the usual, she laughed. But Tim, his eyes lit up when I told him. He was really excited about it. The foursome decided to go through with the plan, and from 1991 through 1993, they also successfully kept it a secret. I turn into a pumpkin at 10
p.m., Hand said. So it was exciting for me to get out that late at night. The act was even worthy of The Dallas Posts front page in 1991. Many business owners spent the day after Valentines Day wondering who the Phantom was, though many just enjoyed the message. I love Dallas, I really do, Hand said. There are a lot of good people here. Sometimes, in the winter you get into doldrums it brought a smile to peoples faces. The sneaky adventures were not without mishaps, though. One year Hand and her husband were pulled over by a Dallas Borough police officer in the wee hours of the morning as they were spreading the love. It was embarrassing for me, she said. I said, Call Jack Fowler; this is all legal!
Exhaustion after distributing more than 100 hearts all night also landed her in the emergency room one year. One year I was so sleepy the next day, and it was so snowy and icy, that I slipped and broke my foot, she said. As Im going down to the hospital, it was really cool to see all the pink hearts on all the businesses. Not long after, the group decided to go into hiding and the Valentine Phantom hasnt resurfaced since. Though Hand admits she wouldnt be able to do it again now, she would like to see the tradition continued by someone else. This year, the Valentines will not be from me, but if anybody out there is interested, call me and I can give you some tips, she said.
Dallas Middle School French and Spanish Club students, under the direction of Mrs. Susan Davis and Mrs. Farouzeh Razavi, recently entertained residents of the Mercy Center in Dallas. The students performed traditional Christmas carols but also sang carols in French and Spanish.

coming season. The board also opened eight bids for the Toby Creek Emergency Streambank Stabilization Project. The grant-funded project, made possible through a partnership with the Luzerne County Conservation District, is to place stabilizing materials along 135 feet of the streambank. The township received the following bids: Brdaric Excavating of Swoyersville in the amount of $61,424; Stell Enterprises of Plains Township in the amount of $117,845; Phillips & Jordan Inc. of Williamsport in the amount of $116,865; Wexco-

A bid will be awarded at a special meeting to be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27 in the municipal building. In other news, the board... Approved the Pennsylvania Department of General Services 2012-13 salt contract participation agreement. Approved Borton-Lawsons request for a notice to proceed with construction services in accordance with the engineering agreement with the state De-
partment of Transportation for the East Center Street Bridge Project. Approved the electronic execution of the contract with Fabcor Inc. in the East Center Street Bridge Project. Appointed the following residents to official boards: Raymond Stephens to the zoning hearing board, Joan Ruscavage as an alternate to the zoning hearing board, Bridget Costello as alternate to the zoning hearing board, Chris Wargo to the recreation commission, Mary Wargo to the recreation commission and Nicole White as an alternate to the recreation commission. The Kingston Township Board of Supervisors will hold a regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14 in the municipal building.

about wins and losses but about the man. I have talked to many of you who said this is about the students; we are here for the kids, he said. They are the students and it is falling on deaf ears. I have a hard time understanding why. Coach Jackson was suspended for the 2010 season due to an incident when some Dallas High School football players urinated on the Tunkhannock High School tennis courts. He was also under probation in 2008 for a fight between Dallas football players and members of the opposing team. Zaruta, 54, of Shavertown, has been the freshman and varsity coach at GAR, coached Dallas freshmen for one year and at the varsity level for four years, ending in 2007. After the meeting, Zaruta said he understands emotions are running high and knows it will take a while for the team to get used to him. He does, however, think when Dallas gridders see his plans, they will be excited for the next season. In other news High School Principal Jeffery Shafer unveiled a new fiveperiod block schedule he hopes to implement for the 2012-2013 school year. The tentative schedule will offer one 76-minute first-period class and four 73-minute classes, running in a 90-day format. The morning homeroom period will be eliminated with the exception of the first and last day of school, report card distribu-

tion and standardized testing days. The schedule will allow students to earn 10 credits annually as opposed to the eight they receive now. New course selection will include subjects such as electronics and robotics, broadcasting, a full-year music program and business computer information technology. A foreign language program is still being reviewed. We are thinking along the lines of offering Chinese and Russian, whether it is through blended schools or online learning or in house, Shafer said. We are not sure yet. Shafer estimates the new schedule will be revealed to students in mid-March and to the public at the end of March. Bob Nesbit of Crabtree and Rohrbach addressed issues with the new high school building, including leaks in the heating and plumbing systems, which will be addressed during the Presidents Day weekend. He said R.J. Reynolds will repair the plumbing leaks which are connected to the fire sprinklers and A.J. Demor will fix leaks within the heating system. Decals on the gymnasium floor have been scuffed up and the finish is dull, Nesbitt said. He would like to have the entire gym floor redone and decals reapplied during the summer. Better insulation in the art rooms west facing wall should correct draft issues in that area, he said. The next school board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13 in the administrative building.
dressing issues regarding cleanup on Sedlar Lane. Grant relayed that Humphreys said though work on the pipeline was completed Jan. 6, work is not yet complete in remedying right-ofway areas. She said the right-of-way, including Sedlar Lane, has been seeded and mulched in preparation for winter weather. Humphreys wrote the company must still comply with erosion and sedimentation controls as outlined in a state permit and in an agreement with the township, and the company will continue to monitor the area throughout the winter. She also said the company will plant vegetation in the springtime in compliance with state and township requirements.
The board approved an update to the Emergency Operations Plan of Dallas Township and agreed to update the plan every two years to ensure it conforms with county operations. Martin said the plan had not been updated in a number of years, and the operations plan includes contact information that would act as a Bible in any emergency situation. The board also agreed to change its monthly meeting schedule starting in March. The dates and times will remain the same, but instead of two meetings during which official votes can be taken, the first Tuesday of the month will act as a work session in which all parties of the township and residents can discuss certain issues before action is taken on those issues. The second meeting of the month, on the third Tuesday, will be a formal meeting during which the board will take action on issues discussed at
the work session. Martin said many municipalities in the area have similar schedules, such as Dallas Borough and Kingston Township. The board also announced that Grant will not accept the $2,500 a year stipend he would receive for being a supervisor. Grant said he did not know there was a stipend when he applied, and decided to forgo the payment because he feels being a supervisor is more about community involvement. The board also announced the creation of an investment committee comprised of supervisors and representatives of the uniformed and non-uniformed pension plan. The supervisors adopted an official policy about how the pension group members can invest monies. The next Dallas Township Board of Supervisors meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21 in the municipal building.
