was Aphrodite who presented a rose to her son Eros, god of love. From there, the symbol of the rose grew to one of love and desire. If you need a symbol of love and desire for your special Valentine, make sure to head to downtown Oswego and check out Floral Expressions & Gifts to spoil your sweetheart. Located at 67 Main Street, Floral Expressions & Gifts provides flower and gift delivery to Oswego and the surrounding area. Floral Expressions is essentially three shops in one: 1) the flower shop where they offer a large amount of fresh flowers and helium balloons, 2) the gift shop where you will find unique gift ideas and gourmet goodies to make your own premium gift baskets, and 3) the wedding boutique, where they offer personalized wedding consultations to help you design your dream wedding. Coming in March Floral Expressions will launch its newest venture:

Throughout history, people have used flowers to express their feelings and this is especially true when it comes to Valentines Day. Wondering why we give each other roses as a symbol of love on this day, I Googled the phrase history of flowers. Over 400,000 hits came up for this generic phrase so I went with the first link and found myself on www.flowermonthclub. com. It was there that I discovered that molecular biologists, who use DNA molecules to estimate age, can trace roses back some 200 million years! The site also discussed the legend of Cloris, who was the goddess of flowers and crowned the rose as queen of the flowers. Then there

My side effects subsided, and I eventually left the military to pursue higher learning. Although when I got out of the service, I was at a loss of where I could get care or how to get that care. Recently, The Veterans Affairs Department partnered with First Army at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, to make this enrollment process easier when applying for treatment easier. The VA has done this to better service troops who exit the military without having applied for VA health benefits. Secretary Eric Shinseki said that this will help streamline the VA healthcare enrollment (down from 10 to 3 days) and make it easier for service members to get the care they earned by their service. It is highly recommended that any service members who have been

Profile in Business: Retreat in County

by Ron Bartlett

As we enter the home stretch of this primary season, it important to note that we live in a country that gives us so much in terms of our freedom. Our lifestyle and our independence are just some of the values we as Americans often take for granted. This election season many of us find ourselves at the same point in time: DEALING with the economic slowdown. Over the past four years, we have witnessed both parties offering programs and solutions to solving our current state. As with the principals of democracy, the American people are the best judges as to which road we will travel in the next two years. So as we begin early voting and anticipate primary day, March 20th, please join me and the staff of the Kendall Weekly Times in voting and helping our democracy to come together for the Great American Debate!

Located on Route 34 at the east end of town, along scenic Rock Creek, the Best Western Plus Hotel and Conference Center in Sandwich is Kendall Countys premier location for weddings, trade shows and business conferences. According to the Sales Director Cindy Prohl, the hotel was the inspiration of a long-time Sandwich family who saw a need for just such a venue in Kendall County, so the land was purchased and trees were cleared and used in the construction of the hotel. As you enter you will notice the large timbers and woodwork (the trees they cut down) used in the main desk and lobby. Along with a beautiful stone fireplace, you get the immediate feeling of a lodge somewhere in the north woods. All guests receive complementary breakfast, and with 100 guestrooms, there is plenty of room for everyone to come and get away from it all. The convention center is very spacious with the hallway alone measuring in at 7000 feet. The main room can be partitioned off into three rooms or left open for large gatherings, like the second annual Great Outdoors Show that was held February 3-5 and the Mixed Martial Arts Cage Fighting Championships held February 11th. Upcoming events include the Bridal Expo and Wicked Wheels Motor Cycle & Car show, also held in

underneath. I tried not to let it bother me. Then, before I knew it, I was being dumpedover dinner. It was as if I were trapped in a nightmare the world was surreal. I was hearing the words, but they werent sinking in. I couldnt believe my ears. Yesterday, we had been happy. Today, I was hearing bizarre excuses. Fortunately or oddly enough, we were close friends. We had been friends before dating. We were still friends, though not fiancs. We strolled around the park after dinner, as I tried to digest the news that tasted very flat and rather rotten. Showing off, he jumped a fence and ripped his pants. Poetic justice, as his pants were too tight. He was wearing khakis, and his skimpy forest-green undies showed like a sore thumb. No, I didnt deserve the cold shoulder that night. I had done nothing wrongbut I didnt know that until afterwards. His guilty conscious was getting the better of him, and he broke up with me because of something he had done, not anything I had done. To be honest, that Valentines Day from hell was just one chapter in a comedic soap opera fairy tale. The story didnt end that evening. Eventually, we got married, raised an awesome family, and stayed together for 20 years. And he learned to buy me rose bushes we could plant in the spring and enjoy for years to come, and half-price chocolate hearts that didnt last as long, except on my waistline. Valentines Day is just another day one of 366 this year, but I hope its a good one for you. If its not, just wait until tomorrow, my friend, and maybe Ill run into you at the store buying half-price confectionery delights.

Letter to Editor
My name is Amy Cesich and I am running for a seat on the Kendall County Board District 1. I have lived in Kendall County for almost seven years. Our family moved to this area to enjoy the open spaces and to be part of a growing community. I believe strongly in volunteerism, have had the honor of being a member of our community HOA Board, and currently serve on the Yorkville Parks and Rec Board. Having always been interested in politics and the governing of our community, I became involved with the Kendall County Democratic Central Committee and serve as our Media Relations Director. We enjoy special resources here in Kendall County with Silver Springs State Park, the Fox River running through several cities, and a thriving agricultural industry. My involvement with the Yorkville Parks and Rec Board, my past experiences with Board operations, and longtime passion for enjoying and preserving our natural resources, will serve me well as a County Board member. Its been said that things get done by those who show up, and I'm showing up! I believe that the majority of voters want a candidate who has an open mind, wants a fiscally responsible government, and who shares their desire for a better community for all of us. Valentines Daya day of love and romance, roses and chocolateexcept sometimes Cupids arrow leaves a nasty flesh wound. If I am suspicious of the Hallmark holiday, am I a skeptic or am I a realist? I dont need a dozen roses that will droop within a week. And while I need the chocolate (antioxidant-laden dark chocolate, preferably), Ill be thrilled if you buy it on February 15 for half-price. That way, I get twice as much for the buck. You can make me a greeting card; you dont have to invest in Hallmark or their competitors. But dont give me a plastic ring from the gumball machine (thats another story). To catch a glimpse into my cynicism, I share this story. The Valentines Day that stands out in my memory was one of lifes creepy jokes. We were young, in love, and engaged. Life should have been perfect. We met for a nice Valentines Day dinner, just as we had planned. Dressed for success, we strolled downtown to the steak house. However, while the evening seemed picture-perfect on the surface, tension was brewing

name on a modern map. Still, the name conjures greatness, splendor, history, culture, and knowledge. Its earlier name-root Byzantine still means highest and unknowable in English. Constantinople, the mystical place still indeed exists, with all its splendor and culture intact as modern-day Istanbul in Turkey. Geographically placed between Asia and Europe, Istanbul has seen the likes of Darius the Great, Xerxes, Alexander the Great, Cesar, Tamerlane, Seljuks, Mongols, four Crusades and the Ottomans. It is an incredibly layered city, archaeologically, historically and culturally. Its architecture reflects its many influences, nowhere more so than Hagia Sophia, first a splendid christian church, now a magnificent mosque open to millions of visitors from around the world. Gold, spices, grains, woods, and jewels in vast amounts have been traded for 3,000 years in the city markets, and these lace Turkish cuisine, language and culture to this day. If you would like to visit a megacity truly ancient and modern at the same time, Istanbul has few equals on our planet. Each time I have visited it, I have come away with new insights and thoughts about its history. Turkish people are welcoming, hospitable, highly educated, and many speak English very well.

On 11 May 330 AD, at about the time he became the very first christian emperor, Constantine the Great declared a New Rome the capital of his empire. His selection, 1000 miles east of Rome, was made in an effort to get away from the entrenched decadence of the actual capital, and for over a Millenia, it was a success. (Located at about 41 1 7 North Latitude in what is known as Anatolia, were it in the United States, it would place New Rome at about mile south of Dwight, Illinois, on Rout 47, with similar weather and seasons.) Early on, New Rome was also called Byzantium for an earlier Greek city there, already more than 1,000 years old. But the name Constantinople, or City of Constantine, is the name that survived for 1,600 years, after which it was officially changed in 1930 (using a word derived from a long-lost root; a contraction of the Greek words eis tan Polis or in the City, on referencing roadsigns). To this day, people wonder when or where Constantinople actually existed, or did it ever exist? This is not surprising since one cannot find the

The Blackhawks skid continues as their winless streak hits 8 games

Blackhawks Report By Ron Bartlett

They need to do something soon to try and snap the skid. They needed to get at least 14 points out of a possible 18, and right now as it stands, they have 1 point out of 12. The road trip will start back up on Tuesday with a tough game against division rival Nashville Predators, the team that started the Hawks on this losing streak back on January 21st. It has been a while since the boys in the red sweaters have tasted victory. Lets hope they can return the favor and knock off the Preds. It will not be easy to make the playoffs now, so every game from here on out will be big. Lets hope they turn it around soon.

The poor play continues for the Hawks as they lost for the 6th straight time on the road trip, with disappointing games against Colorado, who had scored more than 2 goals in only two of their last 12 games. Colorado scored five times against the Hawks goalies, and the same was true in the loss to San Jose on Friday. The road trip continued Saturday with a 7:30 tilt in the desert as the Hawks looked to end their skid against the Phoenix Coyotes. Sadly, the game started the same way it did in San Jose the night before, with the Coyotes jumping out to a 2 goal lead. They never looked back as they out played the Hawks on their way to a 3 0 shutout win. The Hawks goaltending is not getting any better, and there are rumors that the Blackhawks scouts have been at several of the NY Islander games, looking at veteran goalie Evgeni Nabokov. A trade could be in the works.

Helpful Home Tips

Air Sealing Homes for energy efficiency (Part 4) By Ron Bartlett

Sealing Duct Leaks The duct work is considered part of the thermal boundary because they are full air from the home. Return air ducts Ducts that are attached to the garage or run through the attic and crawlspace can create quite a bit of air leakage. Sealing the ducts in these areas should begin near the air handler (furnace). The leaks here are under higher pressure and should be dealt with first, because they can depressurize the

Kendall Weekly Times

combustion zone of the heating equipment and cause backdrafting that could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Seal all gaps and cracks or openings with duct mastic or foil duct tape. As discussed before, use the back of your hand to find the problem areas. Carefully inspect and seal leaks at all transition areas, like bends elbows or any change of direction in the ducts. Also dont forget to seal around the filter assembly.
Ron Bartlett, Bartlett's Home Inspection

Inspect and seal these areas appropriately. The plenum joint at the air handler is a big concern as this has been a difficult spot for HVAC installers to fasten. Use silicone caulk or foil duct tape instead of mastic, to make for easier access in case maintenance is required. Seal all joint elbows and direction changes, like you did for the return air ducts. Flexible ducts should be inspected regularly at the main duct branch to ensure no air is leaking and for any type of mechanical damage or animal activity.

Duct boots, registers and chases, should be sealed around the wall, floor and ceilings. If the opening is too big to be sealed with foam or caulk, use a ridged barrier like plywood, drywall, or ridged foam board. Lastly, you may consider sealing off supply and return registers in unoccupied basements and crawl spaces. As always, you should use common sense and proper safety equipment. If you are not sure about something, consult a professional.
