Holistic Leadership Work place spirituality defined: A framework of organizational values evidenced in the culture that promotes employees

experience of transcendence through the work process, facilitating their sense of being connected in a way that provides feelings of compassion and joy. Spirituality for many means self-managed, adult, self-directed and conscious development. It consists of 4 dimensions: 1. Religiousness: Spirituality unites but religion divides. You can be spiritual, religious, neither or both. Its about employees who understand themselves as spiritual beings at work whose souls need nourishment, a sense of purpose and meaning and a sense of connectedness to one another and to their workplace community. 2. Interconnectedness: The ability to work with others. 3. Sense of mission: The purpose and reason for doing something 4. Wholeness: Feeling complete having work and your values aligned and not feeling dissonance Spirituality elements/items in the SLBS 1. Is driven by a sense of higher calling 2. Installs a strong sense of mission within me 3. Encourage me to express my whole self in the work place 4. Helps me to find clarity of purpose and direction 5. Is conscious of how his or her behaviors impact me 6. Promotes values that transcend self-interest and material success 7. Helps me to generate a sense of meaning our everyday life at work Spirituality involves connectedness the flow. Its about being completely involved in an activity for its own sake where your whole being is involved and youre using your skills to the utmost. -Completely focused, concentrating and involved -Sense of ecstasy -Great inner clarity knowing what needs to be done and how well it is going -Knowing the activity is doable that the skills are adequate and neither anxious or bored -Sense of serenity no worries about self, feeling of growing beyond the boundaries of ego -Timeliness thoroughly focused on present, dont notice time passing -Intrinsic motivation whatever produces flow becomes its own reward Traditionally psychology focused on whats going wrong like the problems with memory, learning and attention and the problems

associated with disorders, like depression and schizophrenia. However, psychology takes on a new outlook with the awareness of positive psychology that looks into: Confidence/self efficacy, Hope, Optimism, Subjective well being, emotional intelligence. Hence the focus has changed from weakness, cure and negative to strengths, prevention and positives. -Only when you operate from strengths can you achieve true excellence. One cannot build performance of weaknesses. It takes far more energy to improve from incompetence to mediocrity than to improve from first-rate performance to excellence. -Positive emotions broaden individuals thought action repertoires (collection) this can have an effect of building an individuals personal resources including physical, intellectual and social resources. Evidence for positive emotions: In the moment Positive emotions: 1. Broaden Attention and thinking 2. Undo lingering negative emotional arousal Over time positive emotions: 1. Prevent depression 2. Trigger upward spirals to increase well being 3. Build optimism
