Masiakowski gets Purple Heart after waiting nearly 60 years

A love feast
It is Valentines Day a love feast. Couples know how to celebrate well on this day as they gift each other with chocolate, flowers and dinner out somewhere. Just try to get a reservation at the last minute. But look beyond Valentines Day as a couples only day. Look to it, if you will, as a love day mother and child, neighbor to neighbor, friend to friend and even country to country. Look to it as a day to celebrate the reason we are on this planet to love. Each year, a friend of mine gathers a group of women together for lunch at our local general store. It is a lovely way for this group that includes women who are married, divorced, widows, never married, with or without partners. We celebrate friendship on that day. Another friend who owns the local tea shop hosts high tea on the Sunday before Valentines Day. The participants include couples, singles it matters not. We are there to celebrate Valentines Day and enjoy high tea. I am certain there are many Valentine events that are not limited to couples because, in spite of all the florist and restaurant owners who capitalize on this day by advertising it for couples, it is a day to celebrate love in all of its packages. So, consider who it is who means a great deal to you or consider someone who might be alone and use this day to reach out, to express love. It can be fun. Find a recipe for cookies that can be cut into heart shapes, frosted and enjoyed by your family or a friend. Have the whole family make valentines for people who are in a nearby nursing home or To FRIEDEL-HUNT, Pg. 6B

After waiting nearly 60 years, Korean War veteran David Masiakowski received the Purple Heart in a formal ceremony last Wednesday at Milestone Senior Living in Eagle River. Pfc. Masiakowski, 81, whose eye was injured by shrapnel during combat in 1952, originally was given the award informally during his recovery in a hospital bed. While reviewing benefits paperwork with Masiakowskis daughter, Tricia Scarlato, Vilas County Veterans Service Officer Scott Jensen discovered there was no military record of Masiakowski receiving the award. He shed blood for his country, said Jensen. Therefore, we submitted a correction for military records and he received a new discharge certificate amended with the award of the Purple Heart. After receiving the certificate, Scarlato organized a surprise ceremony for Masiakowski, whose shock was evident

as he descended from the second floor of the senior living facility to a crowded room of attendees. Following a formal presentation of the Purple Heart award to her father, Scarlato thanked the ceremony guests.

My father gave a lot to his family and he gave a lot to his country, she said. I thank you so much for being here today and being a part of my fathers ceremony, because hes so deserving of this. Masiakowski, whose sur-

prise was still apparent after the service, said he appreciated the award, its observance and the ceremony guests. Its quite an honor, he said. The ceremony was really great, and Im surprised at the turnout.

LIFESTYLE Cats Pajamas to perform Feb. 22 at Northland Pines High School

Tickets are on sale for The Cats Pajamas, a national touring all-male vocal group that will perform Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Northland Pines High School (NPHS) in Eagle River. Doors will open at 7 p.m. This performance is part of their multi-state Music in Schools Tour to help support local music programs. Considered the fastest-rising vocal band on the planet, The Cats Pajamas pride themselves on their singing talents and their ability to engage each audience member during their interactive performances. Their blend of classic songs with a modern a cappella twist will showcase their unique style. The group is based out of Branson, Mo., and performs 200 shows per year. They have been a Top 15 finisher on NBCs The Sing-Off, Top 30 finisher on Next Great American Band, and have also been seen on Americas Got Talent and Oprah. Two of the five members were born and raised in Wisconsin. Their stay at Northland Pines will include clinics with the choirs and an all-school performance, along with the evening show. We are very lucky to have The Cats Pajamas visit our school, said Kate Janssen, NPHS choir director. Our students are excited for their highenergy performance, fantastic a cappella harmonies, and excellent vocal percussionist. The evening performance is a great way for the community to see this nationally recognized a cappella group while supporting the music department at Northland Pines. The Cats Pajamas have organized a high school tour each year since 2007. Through the Music in Schools Tour, the group performs choral clinics and works with high school music students to emphasize the importance of staying involved with choir and band. Partial proceeds from each show will be donated back to the music department at the school they are working with. Over the years, the Cats Pajamas have raised more than $35,000 for high school music programs in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Northland Pines Music Boosters will sponsor a reception in the commons after the show. Tickets for the show are available in the NPHS office. Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $5 for students. For more information, contact Kate Janssen at (715) 4794473, ext. 0801, or kjanssen @npsd.k12.wi.us, or call the main office at (715) 479-4473, ext. 1.

Local Special Olympics athletes participate in state Winter Games

More than 250 athletes participated in the annual Special Olympics Wisconsin Winter Games. This event has been held in Wausau the last 24 years with athletes from across the state who compete in a number of outdoor events, from downhill skiing and snowboarding to snowshoe racing and alpine racing. Five athletes from Northern Access Special Olympics, all students of the Northland Pines School District, competed in the snowshoe racing competition in Nine Mile Forest at Rib Mountain. Results are as follows: Isiah Annis fifth (50meter race) and sixth (100meter race); Jamie Burton gold (50m) and gold (100m); Nikki Deditz silver (50m) and bronze (100m); Amanda Farrow sixth (50m) and silver (100m); and Gerald Zwolinski fifth (50m). Jon Davis, Northern Access Special Olympic coach, said, Words cannot express how proud I am of my snowshoe athletes. They ran hard and kept trying even when they were tired or fell down. They all did such a great job for our first time at the winter state games. Agency Manager Jessica Chuckel said, This was the first year we had athletes participate in state Winter Games and we really couldnt do it without local support from the Northland Pines School District, which provided snowshoes for our season, and volunteers who assisted during weekly practices and at competitions. Nanci Foster, a Northern Access volunteer, said she was touched by the weekend experience and stated, A visually impaired persons hand is placed on a rope, and they are expected to run as fast as they can in their snowshoes, trusting all those other people to hold the rope tight and keep them safe. Thats what I call blind faith. The Northern Access athletes will compete at Klondike Days Sunday, March 4. For more information, contact Chuckel at jchuck el@ northernaccess.org.

2012 FIT FOR LIFE

WEEK 6

PRESENTED BY:

Watch the groups weight loss here weekly.

The group lost a total of 9 pounds.

W SPOTLIGHT W
Bobbie Hall Eagle River Weeks loss: 2 lbs.
It should be noted that Bobbie has already lost 57 lbs. previous to this competition, so it is more common to plateau at this point. She has already taken measures to bust the plateau by mixing up her training.

ALREADY AT THE HALFWAY POINT, DO YOU FIND YOU HAVE MORE ENERGY AND FEEL BETTER?
John Schuh Phelps
Weeks loss: 5 lbs.

I feel great! Except right after our workouts (sore), I also have lots more energy. I wish it was summer so I could be working in my yard and garden. It will be here soon enough.

I feel much more energetic than before. I feel stronger and I can do exercises I couldnt do in the first and second weeks. I also find that I fall asleep right away instead of lying awake for hours. When this is over, Im making exercise a part of my daily life. I love going to the YMCA!

Margaret Rainer Three Lakes

Weeks loss: 0 lbs.

Already at the halfway point? No, I havent noticed more energy. Ive been working out hard and that helps make me tired. In regard to feeling better, I believe the exercises are helping my back issues. I feel good about the progress Im making in the gym, even if slow.

Tabitha Avery Eagle River

Weeks loss: 2 lb.

I have more energy and feel better than I did six weeks ago. Can do more during the workouts and last longer than I did five weeks ago. I think I have improved overall, in the gym and at home/work. Halfway through this challenge, I have a lot more energy, a lot more focus and just feel better overall. This helps keep me motivated to keep exercising and enjoy healthy eating!

Rochelle Frank Eagle River

Weeks loss: 0 lbs.

At this point my pants are fitting very comfortably, I can look in the mirror and say to myself you are doing this and you can keep doing this! I get up for work around 5 to 5:30 a.m. and I spring right out of bed. I sleep like a baby most nights unless we worked out super hard and I am a little sore. Overall, I feel fresh, happy and full of life!

Michele Jacobson Eagle River

Weeks loss: 0 lbs.

This week the group worked so very hard! We are at a level of training far beyond what I initially expected at this point. The groups weight loss, overall, was disappointing considering how hard everyone worked and how often everyone exercises. The important part is to not lose sight of the mission. Keep your chin up and forgive past indiscretions. Put it behind you and move on. Almost everyone improved their mile-run time! Keep focus on those positive aspects of your performance and keep going!

Do you ever feel like youre literally working your tail off, but dont see results on the scale? There are many reasons for this: water retention, lean body mass gain (i.e., you gain muscle) and bologna. Yes. Bologna. I want to talk about accountability. Sticking to a calorie-restricted diet is very difficult and its easy to lie about it to others, and to yourself. Keep an eating journal. You dont have to share it with anyone. Keep it to yourself because thats who youre doing this for. Dont look at the journal as temporary. Look at it as accounting for what youre really consuming and use it as a tool to adjust your eating habits permanently. Think of it like getting an education. Dont take the course, study and pass the test and never plan on using what you learned. Commit to making the permanent change in your habits. The first step is understanding the obstacles. Account for what your obstacles may really be. Julia John

For many people, eating is a way to stuff back difficult or painful emotions. As the weight comes off, these emotions will rise to the surface. Take the time to acknowledge them, understand them and then let them go. Some people find writing, journaling, role-playing or working with a therapist may help you work through these buried feelings in a healthier way. Julie LaCrosse, RDCD

We have been exchanging handmade valentines since the early 1700s. According to history.com, it was Esther Howland who began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America in the 1840s. She made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as scrap. Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentines Day cards are sent each year, making Valentines Day the second-largest card-sending holiday of the year. An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas. Women purchase approximately 85% of all valentines. Now where

are all those men when it comes to buying cards? Millions of dollars will be spent on flowers, jewelry and dining on Valentines Day. We surely do know how to celebrate love. Celebrating it Feb. 14 could easily be expanded to include every day of the year in every home. Little things like putting I love you notes in the kids lunch bags mean a lot. A kind word to a family member or neighbor can lift their spirit. Dropping a note to someone you have not seen in a while can change their day. Happy Valentines Day! Local food pantries to benefit from drive

Fresh Hope for the Hungry, the second annual food drive coordinated by Trigs of Eagle River and local food pantries, will be held from Feb. 12 to March 10. Food pantries from Three Lakes, Eagle River and Land O Lakes will receive items as a result of the donations collected during that time. In 2011, a full truck semi trailer of food items was collected and distributed from the Eagle River Trigs location to the pantries. As the economy continues to struggle, the food pantries in all three locations have seen a rise in the number of families who need assistance. Event organizers from Trigs and the food pantries said theyre hopeful the community involvement in this food drive will help stuff a truck in an effort to meet the demand for food. Donations of nonperishable food items or personal hygiene items can be dropped off at the following Three Lakes locations: First National Bank, M&I BMO Harris Bank and Three Lakes Pharmacy. There also are collection bags at the Three Lakes and Sugar Camp elementary schools and the Three Lakes High School office. To make a cash donation of any size, visit any of the three business locations or the school office.

NOTICE OF SPRING PRIMARY AND SAMPLE BALLOTS

FEBRUARY 21, 2012
OFFICE OF THE VILAS COUNTY CLERK TO THE ELECTORS OF THE TOWN OF PRESQUE ISLE & TOWN OF WINCHESTER, VILAS COUNTY: Notice is hereby given of a spring primary election to be held in the Town of Presque Isle and the Town of Winchester in Vilas County on the 21st day of February 2012, at which the officers named below shall be nominated. The names of the candidates for each office, whose nominations have been certified to or filed in this office, are given under the title of the office, each in its proper column, together with the questions submitted to a vote, for a referendum, if any, in the sample ballot below. INFORMATION TO ELECTORS Upon entering the polling place, an elector shall state his or her name and address, show an acceptable form of photo identification and sign the poll book before being permitted to vote. Where ballots are distributed to electors, the initials of two inspectors must appear on the ballot. Upon being permitted to vote, the elector shall retire alone to a voting booth or machine and cast his or her ballot except that an elector who is a parent or guardian may be accompanied by the electors minor child or minor ward. An election official may inform the elector of the proper manner for casting a vote, but the official may not in any manner advise or indicate a particular voting choice. Where optical scan voting is used, the elector shall fill in the oval next to the name of the candidate of his or her choice for each office for which he or she intends to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the elector shall write in the name of the person of his or her choice in the space provided and fill in the oval on the write-in line. On referendum questions, the elector shall fill in the oval next to yes if in favor of the question, or the elector shall fill in the oval next to no if opposed to the question. Where touch screen voting systems are used, the elector shall touch the screen next to the name of the candidate of his or her choice for each office for which he or she intends to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the elector shall type in the name of the person of his or her choice in the space provided for a write-in vote. On referendum questions, the elector shall touch the screen next to yes if in favor of the question, or the elector shall touch the screen next to no if opposed to the question. The vote should not be cast in any other manner. Not more than five minutes time shall be allowed inside a voting booth. Sample ballots or other materials to assist the elector in casting his or her vote may be taken into the booth and copied. The sample ballot shall not be shown to anyone so as to reveal how the ballot is marked. If the elector spoils an optical scan ballot, he or she shall return it to an election official who shall issue another ballot in its place, but not more than three ballots shall be issued to any one elector. If the ballot has not been initialed by two inspectors or is defective in any other way, the elector shall return it to the election official, who shall issue a proper ballot in its place. After casting his or her vote, the elector shall leave the voting booth, properly deposit the ballot and promptly leave the polling place. The elector may spoil a touch screen ballot at the voting station before the ballot is cast. After an official optical scan ballot is marked, it shall be inserted in the security sleeve so the marks do not show. After casting his or her vote, the elector shall leave the booth, insert the ballot in the voting device and discard the sleeve, or deliver the ballot to an inspector for deposit. If a central count system is used, the elector shall insert the ballot in the ballot box and discard the sleeve, or deliver the ballot to an inspector for deposit. The elector shall leave the polling place promptly. After an official touch screen ballot is cast, the elector shall leave the polling place promptly. An elector may select an individual to assist in casting his or her vote if the elector declares to the presiding official that he or she is unable to read, has difficulty reading, writing or understanding English or that due to disability is unable to cast his or her ballot. The selected individual rendering assistance may not be the electors employer or an agent of that employer or an officer or agent of a labor organization which represents the elector. Friends of school house set fundraisers

The Friends of the Old School recently met at the St. Germain Community Center, to finalize plans for their next fundraising activity. The committees goal is to assist the town in paying for renovation of the old red brick school building. The building has been badly neglected for about 15 years, said Ellen Allen, coordinator of the group. The town is divided over what to do with the building. Half the town wants to restore it, and the rest want it torn down. Electors have not allocated money to pay for removal or renovation, nor has the town been able to budget money to do either. An engineering study completed in late 2011 suggested tearing down the newer part and leaving the original 1941 unit standing and remodeling it, so the town can define its future use. The groups treasurer, Lue Sherren, reported a savings balance of $5,642.80. Approximately $1,200 of this balance came from proceeds from the groups last spaghetti dinner. Friends also have started making plans for a fundraising carnival in April. The event will feature games for children and a dinner and dance event in the evening. All proceeds will be used to benefit the Friends goal of remodeling the school. The groups next meeting will be held Thursday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. at the Community Center.

Discover Wisconsin begins collecting Phelps footage

Discover Wisconsin will be in the Phelps area over the next year getting footage of all four seasons to be incorporated into a 30-minute video promoting the town. The finished product will air for the first time in 2013 and will reach an average of 177,000 households per showing in Wisconsin and surrounding states. The episode will play a total of three times over a two-year period, highlighting activities, the school and diversity of local businesses in Phelps. The Discover Wisconsin cameras were most recently in town during the filming of the Phelps Lions Club Fishing Tournament, cross-country skiing and other winter activities. At a Phelps Town Board meeting in January, supervisors approved the funding and contracting of Discover Wisconsin. At the town budget meeting, the citizens approved to move ahead with the project.
