1. Who is using the book The book was bought by the key world libraries: Library of Congress (Washington, U.S.A.), Harvard University library (U.S.A.), MIT, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, University of California, Columbia, Cornell, and almost all other universities in the U.S.A. The book was acquired by the libraries of almost all universities as well as many governmental agencies in Canada, by the British Library (London, U.K.), University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Imperial College; National Library of Scotland; Trinity College Dublin; by a number of key universities in France; also, by the central library in Denmark it is included in 'Danish Collections (The National Collections)'. The book is in the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zrich, Switzerland; University of Basel and University of Bern, Switzerland; the best libraries in Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Italy, Finland, other key libraries of Europe. The book was bought by a number of universities in Australia, and all universities in New Zealand. It was acquired in Japan by the NACSIS (the National Center for Science Information Systems), a core research institute for inter-university information exchange in Japan. It was acquired by National Library of China; in the libraries of four universities of Hong Kong, namely HKUST Library (The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology); CityU Library (City University of Hong Kong); CUHK (The Chinese University of Hong Kong) Libraries; HKU (The University of Hong Kong) Libraries; in National Taiwan University Library and the libraries of two other universities of Taiwan. It is included in the library National University of Singapore, and other universities in Singapore. The book is in use in the libraries of three universities in New Zealand (University of Otago, University of Auckland, and Victoria University of Wellington); more: http://www.scribd.com/doc/79934197/; http://www.scribd.com/doc/77617474/; 2. Why surfactants? Surfactants were and in part are among the most dramatic enigmas and hidden villains of environmental science. Until this book was published, surfactants were wrongly considered as relatively non-toxic, nonhazardous chemicals. Surfactants are the key components of laundry detergents, detergents and washing liquids for washing many things: cars, dishes, pipes. Surfactants are the key components of body care products, shampoos. Surfactants are key components of foam-producing products. Surfactants are key components of waste waters of many industries. Until this book was published, surfactants were considered as relatively safe. Surfactants were considered as chemicals less dangerous than heavy metals or pesticides. The book by Dr. S. Ostroumov was the first monograph that changed that. The innovation made in the book: the monograph demonstrated that surfactants and detergents are of real environmental hazard. This hazard is more serious than it was thought before. 3. About the author, Dr. S. Ostroumov Dr. Sergei A. Ostroumov is an internationally known expert on environmental hazards from detergents. Member of 6 editorial boards of scientific journals in 5 countries. Editor-in-Chief of Ecological Studies, Hazards, Solutions. Authored, co-authored more than 100 well-cited publications. These publications include papers in journal Nature and other first-class journals, and more than 10 monographs. Some of his books were translated into 4 languages. Member of international and national professional societies, including the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. Chair of the permanent organizing committee of a series of international conferences entitled Ecosystems, Organisms, Innovations. Fulbright Award. The 29

Kapitsa Medal for scientific discovery. He was invited to lecture in the U.S.A., Germany, England, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark. All about scientific results and activities of Dr. Sergei A. Ostroumov: http://www.scribd.com/doc/80074854/; 4. More about the content of the book 4.1. Abstract: The book summarizes the 20-year research done by the author and over 90 author's research publications in many Russian and international editions as well as hundreds of publications of other scientists. The book contains new detailed information on the results of the authors studies of the biological effects of synthetic surfactants and detergents on autotrophic and heterotrophic, prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. The chemicals included (1) anionic surfactants, (2) non-ionic surfactants, (3) cationic surfactants, as well as (4) several types of detergents (chemical mixtures). The freshwater and marine organisms studied included: (1) Bacteria and cyanobacteria, (2) algae, (3) flagellates, (4) seedlings of higher plants, (5) invertebrates (mollusks, annelids). The results are discussed and analyzed in connection with: (1) new priorities in assessing the ecological hazards of chemical pollution and xenobiotics on the biosphere and hydrosphere; (2) studying water purification in aquatic ecosystems; (3) setting new priorities in the area of environmental protection. The book is of interest to scientists who conduct research in relevant areas of: ecology, limnology, oceanography, hydrobiology, environmental sciences, water sciences, geosciences, the science of the biosphere and global change, ecotoxicology. The book is useful to university professors, graduate students and educators. The book is also of interest to those who are involved in environmental management and assessment, environmental law and regulation. The book is also of interest to companies that make: (1) dispersants to clean oil spills, (2) shampoos, (3) laundry detergents, (4) detergents for cars, (5) dish washing detergents, (6) the other detergents, washing preparations, and foam preparation. Opinion of Dr. Steven C. McCutcheon about the book, from his Preface: "I am pleased to have this opportunity to comment on the scientific leadership of Sergei A. Ostroumov. The book is highly recommended to those who are involved in studying ecology and solving environmental problems". Steven C. McCutcheon, Ph.D., University of Georgia (U.S.A.), and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; President of the American Society of Ecological Engineering. 4.2.
