The establishment of t h e police force was not entirely intended for c r i m e prevention nor peacekeeping. Rather, it was created as an extension of the colonial military establishment. Ancient Roots The forerunner of the contemporary police system wasthe practice of barangay chieftains to select ablebodiedyoung men to protect their barangay during the night and w e r e n o t r e q u i r e d t o w o r k i n t h e f i e l d s during daytime.A m o n g t h e d u t i e s o f t h o s e s e l e c t e d w e r e t o p r o t e c t t h e properties of the people in the barangay and protect their crops and livestock from wild animals.

A C T N O 1 7 5 entitled A n A c t P r o v i d i n g f o r t h e Organization and Government of an Insular Constabulary, enacted on July 18, 1901 CAPT HENRY ALLEN -the first chief of the Philippine C o n s t a b u l a r y i n 1901 ACT NO 183 - created the Manila Police Department , enacted on July 31, 1901 CAPT GEORGE CURRY, - t h e f i r s t c h i e f o f p o l i c e o f t h e M a n i l a P o l i c e Department in 1901 Act No 255 the act that renamed the Insular Constabulary into Philippine Constabulary, enacted on October 3, 1901 Executive Order 389 ordered that the P h i l i p p i n e Constabulary be one of the four s e r v i c e s o f t h e A r m e d Forces of the Philippines, enacted on December 23, 1940 Post-American Period RA 4864
