Historia de San Valentn

Los enamorados tienen un da en nuestro calendario para demostrar o reafirmar su amor mediante regalos, dedicatorias o poemas pero por qu el 14 de febrero? Existen diversas teoras que otorgan a esta fecha el origen del Da de los Enamorados. En los pases nrdicos es durante estas fechas cuando se emparejan y aparean los pjaros, de ah que este periodo se vea como un smbolo de amor y de creacin. *Algunos creen que es una fiesta cristianizada del paganismo, ya que en la antigua Roma se realizaba la adoracin al dios del amor, cuyo nombre griego era Eros y a quien los romanos llamaban Cupido. En esta celebracin se pedan los favores del dios a travs de regalos u ofrendas para conseguir as encontrar al enamorado ideal. *Tambin, y hace muchos siglos, fue tradicional en Inglaterra la "fiesta de los valentinus", donde se elegan a hombres y a mujeres para que formaran pareja. Muchas de estas parejas se convertan en marido y mujer y conseguan la felicidad de pareja que se espera encontrar y consolidar el Da de San Valentn. Otras fuentes centran el origen de la historia de San Valentn en la Roma del siglo III, poca en la que el cristianismo era perseguido. En este periodo tambin se prohiba el matrimonio entre los soldados ya que se crea que los hombres solteros rendan ms en el campo de batalla que los hombres casados porque no estaban emocionalmente ligados a sus familias. Es en estas circunstancias cuando surge la figura de San Valentn, un sacerdote cristiano que ante tal injusticia decide casar a las parejas bajo el ritual cristiano a escondidas de los ojos romanos. Valentn adquiere por proteger a los enamorados y auspiciar bodas secretas gran prestigio en toda la ciudad y es llamado por el emperador Claudio II para conocerle. El sacerdote aprovecha aquella visita para hacer propaganda de la religin cristiana y convencer al emperador para que siga los pasos de Jess. Aunque en un principio Claudio II se sinti atrado por aquella religin que los mismos romanos perseguan, los soldados y el propio Gobernador de Roma le obligaron a desistir y organizaron una campaa en contra de Valentn. El emperador romano cambi de opinin y orden al gobernador de Roma que procesara al sacerdote. La misin de condenar al sacerdote la tuvo que llevar a cabo el lugarteniente, Asterius. ste, cuando estuvo delante del sacerdote, se burl de la religin cristiana y quiso poner a prueba a Valentn. Le pregunt si sera capaz de devolver la vista a una de sus hijas que era ciega de nacimiento. El sacerdote acept y en nombre del Seor obr el milagro. El lugarteniente y toda su familia se convirtieron al cristianismo pero no pudieron librar a Valentn de su martirio. San Valentn fue ejecutado un 14 de febrero. Por aquel entonces era tradicin entre los adolescentes practicar una curiosa fiesta pagana derivada de los ritos en honor del dios Lupercus, dios de la fertilidad que se celebraba el da 15 de febrero. Era un sorteo mediante el cual cada chico escoga el nombre de una joven que se convertira en su compaera de diversin durante un ao. La Santa Sede quiso acabar con esta celebracin pagana y canoniz a San Valentn como patrn de los enamorados.

El cuerpo de San Valentn se conserva actualmente en la Baslica de su mismo nombre que est situada en la ciudad italiana de Terni. Cada 14 de febrero se celebra en este templo un acto de compromiso por parte de diferentes parejas que quieren unirse en matrimonio al ao siguiente. Sea como fuese, San Valentn se ha convertido en el patrn de todos los enamorados y de todas aquellas personas que quieren tener una pareja.
