Monkeys at Ubud Money Forest Receive Vasectomies as Bali Wo r k s t o S t a b i l i z e Primate Populations
Managers of the Wanara Wana Monkey Forest in Ubud have taken the definitive step of performing vasectomies on male monkeys in order to control the burgeoning population at the popular tourist site. On Sunday veterinarians and a team from the Primate Study Centre at Bali's Udayana University arrived at the Monkey Forest. Difficulties in capturing the elusive male monkeys and a limited number of doctors performing the surgical sterilization limited the procedure to an initial group of just eight apes. The park covers a total of 12 hectares with an estimated monkey population of 600 - 200 of which are sexually productive females

assiduously served by a sexually dominant group of 80 males. Experts estimate 200 new monkeys are added to the population at the forest each year, posing the increasing threat that over-population will outstrip food and space supplies. During the vasectomies, students from the Animal Husbandry Department at Udayana University surveyed the general health and condition of the sedated primates. Continue to page 2

Alius prays that the Transportation Office in Bali will not only sanction through fines or seize trucks that are overloaded, but will also render punishments to the owners of the vehicles found breaking the law. As a tourism destination, Bali needs an infrastructure of roads that are good and adequate, admonished Alius. www.balidiscovery.com

The Heavy Load on Bali's Roads

Bali Government Urged to Introduce Maximum Load Limits on Trucks Tr a v e l l i n g o n Island's Roads
The head of the agency charged with National Roadway Construction for the province (BPJN), Susalit Alius, is calling on Bali to introduce and enforce load and size-limit laws for trucks allowed to travel on the island's roads. As reported by Beritabali.com, BJPN is blaming the poor condition of roads in Bali on the operation of large, over-

loaded trucks. Alius called on the provincial government to maximize the use of weighing stations already in place across Bali. He complained that many trucks coming to Bali are

China probes "bouncing" boiled eggs

Chinese authorities are investigating eggs which bounce after being boiled and may make men sterile, in the latest food safety scare to hit the country.
The eggs, being referred to in Chinese media and on the internet as "rubber eggs" or "ping pong eggs," are too hard to eat, raising suspicion they are fake, after appearing in "small numbers" in markets nationwide. "The investigation is designed to appease consumers' concerns, after some suspected they bought artificial eggs made by unconscientious traders seeking profits. H o w e v e r, t h e e g g s ' hardness could be a natural occurrence, caused by hens consuming large amounts of food enriched with a compound called gossypol, which binds to protein in egg yolks, Xinhua said. "While gossypol normally exists in the residue of cotton seeds added to chicken feed as an extra protein source, large doses of the compound will suppress sperm activity as gossypol has been tested to be used in male contraceptive pills," it added. Food safety worries are nothing new to China, where tales of fake cooking oil, tainted milk and watermelons which explode from being fed too much fertiliser regularly appear in the news. In 2008, at least six children died and nearly 300,000 became ill from powdered milk laced with melamine, an industrial chemical added to low quality or diluted milk to fool inspectors by giving misleadingly high readings for protein levels.

BALI THE RIGHT WAY

day again my fellow punters and welcome to the first week of the A.F.L season. It really is only the practise series or as a professional would say pre season competition and my guess is the Mighty Pies will walk away with the winning purse once again this year. They could have half their players in hospital and I would say the same thing, but I do believe they will come out of the box firing on all cylinders this year. I did have a Aaliasj@kutaweekly.com yarn with a few old mates this week while propping up a favoured bar in Kuta and listened while the armchair experts all agreed that many teams have had a few shuffles and are taking new players to the field, with some having new coaches and directions or game plans entering the 2012 round. It was good listening to this rabble gesticulate and all was well until someone came up with the brilliant idea of getting a shirt made that said The Pies Have Buckley's which seemed to crack everyone up except me. The fact that Buckley has been whacked into the top position aside, the lad has been swinging the pick for a few years in the club with great success and being that the Pies are one of the richest teams in the league, one would suggest that the powers that be have made a decision at a committee level, that would not have been made lightly and acting in the best interest of the club have chosen him to lead the charge. I guess time will tell but, at the end of the day, yes the Pies have Buckley and will give you all a run for your money again this year. Karn the Pies. Moving along, this week I must, with great pleasure, introduce to the paper our latest sponsor and arguably one of the best new restaurants, slash, bars in Bali, being Bamboo Bar on Kartika Plaza road in Tuban. This is, as I said one of the most well presented, well managed places I have seen for a long time and can only say, you must get down and check it out for a feed or a cold beer. They have catered very well for the true Aussie and will do whatever it takes to make your visit one of the best in Kuta. They have heaps of different specials each week and I guarantee you will not find a classier place along that strip. They have a great happy hour that runs from 4-6pm every afternoon on Heineken beer, which is a buy one, get one free deal, so basically half price, and after finding myself there, watching the cricket late last week, live on the big screen, I decided that I want a fan as big as the one they have hanging from the roof in the place, fitted in my house. Lots of fresh air, great service, cold beer in a good surrounding. Every Sunday they have a kids eat free deal which helps keep the cost down when travelling with the billy lids. All in all, a great all rounder in so far as quality goes in Bali. Thank you Bamboo Bar for your support and we look forward to our readers enjoying your place for many years to come. Check out their advert on page 18. Lastly, I have it on good authority there is a terrible outbreak of dengue fever ripping around the island at the moment, and some people have been really sick from not using their brains and chucking on the repellent when they are sitting around relaxing or hitting the streets. I can't stress enough just how important it is to use insect repellent when travelling overseas, especially in South East Asia, and yes Ken, Bali is included in that. I, along with many of my friends have been travelling in the region for more than 20years and none of us have ever suffered from an attack. I even heard a rumour that one particular venue had put the mozzies on the payroll so as many people as possible had been crook from visiting the place. What a load of horse crap, it is the depths of the wet season and the entire region is teaming with mosquito larvae sitting in half dried up puddles and rain filled receptacles and to say it comes from one specific place is ridiculous, anyhow that's about my lot for the week. I hope the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and always remember as per the words of uncle Fester, Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm. Enjoy your week, ALIASJ.

India ministers caught watching porn in parliament

Three Indian politicians from a morally conservative party, including a women's affairs minister, resigned after being caught watching pornography on a mobile phone during a session of state parliament.
News channels broadcast footage showing Karnataka state Minister for Cooperation Laxman Savadi sharing a porn clip with his colleague C.C. Patil, the minister for women and child development, while sitting in the state assembly. The owner of the phone, state Minister for Ports, Science a n d Te c h n o l o g y K r i s h n a Palemar, also quit. "We are requesting the honorable Speaker of the House to conduct an inquiry and we'll come out with a clean chit," Patil said, denying that they were deliberately looking at porn. The three men said they did not want to cause any embarrassment for their party, the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which rules the state and is in opposition at a national level. There has been outrage over the incident not just from rights activists and right-wing Hindu groups in conservative India, but also from the ruling Congress party which called for the assembly to be dissolved. "We live in a country where there already is this social mindset that women are disposable commodities and are seen as transferable properties," Renuka Chowdhary, a former federal minister for women's development and a member of the Congress Party. "It really is troubling that the people who are in positions of power and have the responsibility to change things actually have the same mindset and are busy watching porn," . Girls and women in largely patriarchal India face a barrage of threats including rape, dowry-related murder, forced marriage, domestic violence, honor killings and human trafficking.

Bali Operating Above the Economic Fray

Bank Indonesia Predicts Bali May Largely Evade Fallout from the World Economic Crisis
The chief of the Bali branch of Bank Indonesia, Jeffrey Kairupan, is optimistic that the economic development of Bali in 2012 will generally outpace the national predicted rate of growth for 2012 of 6.5%. Quoted by Radar Bali, Kairupan told the media on Monday, that policymakers must pay serious attention to the worsening economic crisis in Europe and its possible effect on the national eco nomy. The B a n k Indonesia official said there was cause for optimism in Bali due to t h e availability of credit to business people in Bali. In addition, he cited further reasons of optimism in the growing level of investment in Bali supported by steps underway to improve the infrastructure on the island, such as the expansion of Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport.

Such optimism, he said, must be tempered, however, by with a cautious outlook on the global economic crisis, which may eventually also be felt in Bali. www.balidiscovery.com

He also bemoaned that there are many shops at the Bali Airport selling the same merchandise, giving a negative impression to passengers that they were standing in an art market and not a modern airport. The perception of our airport is not positive with at least 16 money-change counters, Purwa added. Purwa pointed out that at many international airports two money-changers are sufficient to serve an entire airport. The inconvenient state of Bali's airport is exacerbated by the current amount of construction now underway at that facility.

Following a recent dress down of Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport from the Bali chapter of the Indonesian Association of Travel Agents (ASITA), the chairman of that organization has again lambasted the main air gateway for the island as being substandard. Al Purwa, chairman of ASITA-Bali, said: Together with the general public, as taxpayers we are very concerned with safety and convenience at the airport. However, at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport there is a great deal of distortion and inconvenience experienced by visiting tourists. According to Purwa,

The research was conducted by Goldstein, Professor Robin Ball from the University of Warwick and their colleagues. It will be presented to the American Physical Society in Boston.

Rapunzel number helps scientists quantify ponytails

Scientists said that a "Rapunzel Number" may have helped them to crack a problem that has perplexed humanity since Leonardo da Vinci pondered it 500 years ago.
Scientists from the University of Cambridge and the University of Warwick said they had devised a "Ponytail Shape Equation", which when calculated using the Rapunzel Number and a measure of the curliness of hair can be used to predict the shape of any ponytail. Cambridge's Professor Raymond Goldstein said that he and his colleagues took account of the stiffness of individual hairs, the effects of gravity and the average waviness of human hair to come up with their formula. The Rapunzel Number provides a key ratio needed to calculate the effects of gravity on hair relative to its length. "That determines whether the ponytail looks like a fan or whether it arcs over and becomes nearly vertical at the bottom," Goldstein said in a telephone interview. The research also took into account how a bundle of hair is swelled by the outward pressure which arises from collisions between the component hairs. Scientists said the work has implications for understanding the structure of materials made up of random fibres, such as wool and fur and will have resonance with

Tank made from over 5,000 egg boxes

Well, firstly it'd be somewhat of a surprise but it might look a little something like the cardboard combat carton seen here. The Challenger 2 replica, built from over five thousand egg boxes, has been created to raise money for a military charity. Sculptor Stuart Murdoch utilised 26 litres of glue, over 10,000 nails, 15 litres of paint, 80 square metres of steel and 5,013 staples to create the piece, taking three weeks to complete it. Part of the celebrations to launch a national egg and spoon race on March 4 to raise money for Help for Heroes, the tank will be on display at the family event at Clapham Common in London. Wittily named 'Eggs for Soldiers', it was set up last year to help raise funds for Help for Heroes. Fifteen pence from the sale of every khaki green box of six Eggs For Soldiers goes directly to the charity which helps wounded servicemen and women returning from conflict, and if you do see the egg box tank, watch out for heavy shelling...

HOROSCOPE PREDICTION 9 Feb - 15 Feb 2012

Aries Mar 20 - Apr 19 It's rare that you'd let obstacles of any kind slow you down. However, being short of facts is another matter. You've tried to find ways around certain problems but with little success. The trick is to stop struggling. However unlikely it seems, your efforts are about to come good, and spectacularly. Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 While it's understandable you're still struggling with developments as unsettling as they were unexpected, these are actually in your best interests. It's just the recent encounter between your ruler Venus and the planet of innovation, Uranus, is bound to shake things up. In retrospect you'll be thankful for everything that took place. Gemini May 21 - Jun 20 By no means are you stubborn. However, you feel honour bound to stick to certain arrangements, if only to show others you're supporting them. Actually, battling to keep existing plans going is doing nobody any favours. Circumstances are changing and so, too, must even the simplest of arrangements, and soon. Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22 Although it's been nearly a week since the emotionally intense Full Moon shook things up, you're still discussing some of the issues events exposed. Challenging as they were initially, having had a chance to delve into the issues in question, you're beginning to be thankful events forced them out in the open. Leo Jul 23 - Aug 22 Don't allow your Leo pride to keep you from admitting that certain once exciting ideas or alliances simply aren't as good as you thought. While you could invest considerable time and effort in putting them right, you've other far better options to consider. Better yet, they wouldn't require nearly as much effort. Virgo Aug 23 - Sep 22 There's a difference between setting goals and pursuing them with vigour, which with Mars in your sign you're doing, and being inflexible. The actual circumstances on which plans are based is changing. This means reorganising some and abandoning others. If it's the latter, it's only so you can come up with something better. Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22 True, one particular arrangement worked in the past. But now you're struggling to keep things going as they are. Circumstances have changed. The sooner you begin updating these arrangements, the more swiftly you'll discover new and far easier ways of dealing with dilemmas you thought you'd just have to live with. Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 21 If you're still experiencing the fallout from last week's pivotal Full Moon, it's no surprise. It triggered a variety of changes. While some were not unexpected, others may have seemed extreme if not just plain unnecessary. Tempting as it is to battle them, instead explore them. You'll be surprised what they offer. sensitive, Pastika said: Don't forget that on Bali, we have two kinds of villages. Besides the 706 administrative villages, Bali also has 1,485 customary villages. A customary village is an autonomous traditional institution that wields powerful influence due to its role as the custodian of local traditions, customs and religious activities.? Traditional villages often establish rules and regulations specific to that locale that must be respected to maintain public order and balance in a community. In the past, internecine conflicts have erupted in Bali between neighbouring villages over issues connected to village borders, cemetery ownership and the adoption of a new, higher caste without the consensus of community members. www.balidiscovery.com

ALL ABOUT BALI

NUSA LEMBONGAN
Nusa Lembongan is a small island off the southeast coast of the main island of Bali.
Fast becoming one of Bali's most popular attractions, this island paradise is a world away from the hassle and hectic pace of South Bali. Neither hawkers nor traffic mar the magnificent scenery; this is a fine place to just put your feet up and relax. Main activities include surfing, diving and snorkelling. The water is some of the clearest you will find anywhere, and a vivid aqua blue in colour. Nusa Lembongan is approximately 8 square km in size, and is one of three neighbouring islands, the others being much larger Nusa Penida and tiny Nusa Ceningan. The three islands are separated from Bali by the Badung Strait. Some visitors may find Nusa Lembongan a little slow after the pace of South Bali. Many areas around the island are good for diving and snorkelling, with abundant marine life and healthy coral. Surfing can get a bit crowded, but the waves are good. There are several white sand beaches away from the main centers which are virtually never crowded. There is a flourishing and well established seaweed farming industry here, and many visitors find it interesting to learn about this. Two main beach areas have traditionally attracted visitors. Jungut Batu in the northwest is the bigger of the two, and has myriad hotels and cheap eateries. This is the area which traditionally attracted backpackers and surfers to the island. The white sand beach here is pleasant enough but nothing to get too excited about, and it is a little narrow in places. In more recent times, the hillside to the south of Jungut Batu known as the Bukit (the hill) has been developed and has attracted higher level hotels. The views from the Bukit are perhaps second to none on Nusa Lembongan. Sunsets are best viewed along the main Jungut Batu beachfront. Mushroom Bay to the southwest of Jungut Batu is a quaint, attractive and sheltered bay. It is an especially nice spot after 3PM when the day trippers have returned to Bali, and it has a great white sandy beach, along with some cozy little water-side restaurants. Further south, the lesser known beaches either side of the Devil's Tear outcrop, known as Dream Beach and Sunset Beach, are increasingly drawing more visitors. The coastal landscape in this part of the island is mostly low-lying limestone cliffs, and there are some dramatic cave formations. The north end of the island is fringed by a mangrove forest, and the eastern side of the island is separated from neighbouring Nusa Ceningan by a shallow estuarine channel. The main population centre of the island is Lembongan Village in the southern interior, and it is here that you will find the homes of most traditional island families. The only realistic way (although you can charter a helicopter to reach Nusa Lembongan from Bali is by boat. There are several options according to budget and speed. Most of the scheduled services leave from Sanur Beach at the end of Jalan Hangtuah, and involve getting your feet wet. The exact departure and arrival point on this beach depends on the tide. Other services run from Benoa Harbour, and there are local public boat services to and from Padang Bai and Kusamba in East Bali, but these are not recommended for reasons of safety and comfort. The attractions here are mostly natural. The beaches and other coastal landscapes are obviously a key draw, as are the sunsets. There are a limited number of man-made attractions, most notably temples and the rickety suspension bridge.

Police use Facebook pictures to nab crooks

Police in the German state of Lower-Saxony will soon use their networks of Facebook "friends" to find missing persons and hunt out suspected criminals, according to the state's interior minister.
The decision to use social media in manhunts follows the completion of a pilot scheme in the northern city of Hanover last year which drew sharp criticism from data protection groups. The scheme helped police clear up six criminal investigations and two missing persons cases after identikits of suspects and stills from Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage were circulated on the social networking site Facebook. Two cases were resolved just hours after the information was uploaded to the site. "Our successes so far clearly show that the police must not shut themselves off from this medium," state interior minister of Lower-Saxony, Uwe Schuenemann, said in a statement. "The police department in Lower-Saxony can adapt to new trends," he said. "With a fan page the police is showing itself to be modern and approachable." Data protection groups heavily criticised the publication of suspects' pictures on Facebook during the pilot last year, arguing that personal data directed through Facebook could end up on an American internet server, outside the influence of EU data protection laws. The new system, which will be introduced in the near future, will direct Facebook users to a police server via an internet link, said Schuenemann. B u t t h e s t a t e commissioner for data protection, Joachim Wahlbrink, said this was not enough and the decision would lead to the circulation of the personal information on the internet which can never be completely deleted. "Once this data has been saved, those involved will always be pilloried," his spokesman, Michael Knaps, said.

The Family Dinner Party A friend hosted a dinner party for family far and wide and everyone was encouraged to bring all their children as well. All during the sit-down dinner one four-year-old girl stared at the uncle sitting across from her. The girl could hardly eat her food for staring. The uncle checked his tie, felt his face for food, patted his hair in place but nothing stopped her from staring at him. He tried his best to just ignore her but finally it was too much for him. He finally asked her "Why are you staring at me?" Everyone at the table had noticed her behaviour and the table went quiet for her response. The little girl said "I just want to see how you drink like a fish.

Power, Davis and Ward to lead GWS

Greater Western Sydney has opted for players at opposite ends of the experience spectrum for its inaugural leadership group, with veteran Luke Power and youngsters Phil Davis and Callan Ward named cocaptains.
"These guys are very dedicated and that's the type of p l a y e r a n d leadership we want," Giants' coach Kevin Sheedy told reporters. S h e e d y revealed he had learnt from the successful cocaptaincy structure employed by his club's crosstown rivals, the Sydney Swans. "Sometimes you look at what somebody has done very well and you should learn from that lesson," Sheedy said. "I think to me they've set up a very strong footy club, the character of the Swans' group, so that's something we had to learn pretty quickly about Sydney." Three-time Brisbane premiership player Power, 32, announced his retirement last year, but was coaxed back into playing by the Giants.

All are on display at the Museum of Broken Relationships in Croatia's capital Zagreb, each with written testimonies telling tales of passion, romance and heartbreak. On Valentine's Day, the museum sees its visits almost double. Ricky Ponting has been named Australian captain for Friday's one-day international against Sri Lanka at the SCG in place of the injured Michael Clarke.
The long-time skipper will lead the side once again after Clarke's hamstring strain ruled him out. Clarke hopes to return to the side in time for Sunday's match with India at the Gabba. He had been left without an official deputy after injury ruled Shane Watson out for most the summer. Although David Warner was nominally deputy for Clarke in last Sunday's match against India at the Adelaide Oval, it was clear Ponting took the lead in the field after Clarke withdrew from play. National selector John Inverarity said the selectors did not want to burden Warner with the captaincy, even in the shortterm, at this point in his development. "After careful consideration the NSP (national selection panel) has asked Ricky Ponting if he would captain the Australian ODI team in Michael Clarke's absence," Inverarity said. Australia also announced the squad for Friday and Sunday's ODIs with the major surprise being Brett Lee's inclusion after suffering a broken toe in the Twenty20 match against India on February 3. Ryan Harris has withdrawn from the squad due to niggling injuries, meaning Lee's replacement Ben Hilfenhaus remains with the squad. Brad Haddin, as he expected, has not returned to the squad after being rested for the first three ODIs. "Some players are showing signs of fatigue after a demanding summer in which the Australian team has played with great intensity and purpose and performed with distinction," Inverarity said. "The national selection panel has omitted Ryan Harris for this reason and for the fact that he is carrying some minor niggles. "The NSP has refreshed the squad with the inclusion of Brett Lee and Ben Hilfenhaus. "Brett is making a good recovery from his toe injury and will be given rigorous fitness tests before Friday's ODI fixture. "As expected Michael Hussey returns to the squad." Australian squad: Michael Clarke (c), Ricky Ponting (captain for Friday's ODI vs Sri Lanka), David Warner (v-c), Dan Christian, Xavier Doherty, Peter Forrest, Ben Hilfenhaus, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Brett Lee, Mitchell Marsh, Clint McKay, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade.

If you think you have problems, spare a thought for people battling extraordinary addictions including being sexually attracted to a car, eating plastic and cat food and drinking nail polish.
These are just some of the issues people in the United States are bravely admitting to the world on TLC's popular reality TV show My Strange Addiction, which focuses on people "battling unusual obsessive behaviour". "The show follows these addicts as they reveal their strange addictions to friends and family, and meet with psychological experts to understand the underlying causes of their behaviour," according to TLC. The show's third season airs in the US on Sunday and features people such as 27-year-old Nathaniel, who has been in a "committed" and intimate relationship with Chase, his 1998 Chevy Monte Carlo. Nathaniel has owned Chase for nearly five years and the show reveals that he "goes on dates with his car, buys it birthday gifts, and even has sex with it". His addiction is described as objectophilia - when a person develops a strong emotional and sexual relationship with an inanimate object - and other cases include attractions to a rollercoaster, an elevator and the Eiffel Tower, according to My Strange Addiction. "It was love at first sight. His body and then his interior and everything just together just seemed to fit and I just felt an instant connection," Nathaniel says. Nathaniel's obsession began during his teenage years while building model cars. He kisses and caresses Chase's "sexy" curves and greets the car with, "Morning baby, my handsome man". My Strange Addiction also exposes people's compulsion to eat items including cat food, plastic and

"Eating it can lead to salmonella, E. coli and cancer." Although cat food isn't a problem for 18-year-old Kailyn, her addiction is just as detrimental to her health. The Californian restaurant hostess has eaten plastic every day for the past 11 years and, like Mary, there are days when Kailyn forgoes human food to instead focus on her addiction. "Plastic is something I want and I feel like I need," the teenager says. "It's not the taste of plastic that I love, it's the way it crunches and feels." She estimates she has eaten a total of 68kg of plastic: 800 forks, 12 remote controls, 5000 beads, 1000 mini cocktail swords, 50 clothes hangers, 25 takeaway cup lids, 10 water bottles, two baby dummies and three CD cases. Others featured on the TV show include Bertha, a 23-yearold who has drunk five bottles of nail polish every day for the past five years; Jamie, 32, who spends 12 hours a day digging in her ears with items including scissors; 28year-old Jaye, who has been snorting baby powder 10 times a day for the past 16 years; and Andrea, 23, who risks cancer because she is hooked on eating sticky tape. In an article on How Stuff Works, Josh Clark says people become addicted to a substance or activity for the same reason they initially try it, they like the way it makes them feel. "They just burst with flavour in your mouth and I just love them," Mary says. "I have a 17-year-old cat to prove that these are not harmful and until somebody proves otherwise I don't see no reason to stop eating them." Mary's addiction has escalated - she has been eating wet cat food for the past year. "It tastes and smells like chicken soup, just like Grandma used to make," she says. Her brother Tommy is disgusted by the habit, but he is also concerned about the effect cat food that is not for human consumption has had on his sister's health. "It's gross. There's four basic food groups and cat treats are not one of them," Tommy says. But Mary is hooked and admits that there have been days when all she eats is cat food - no human food. "Pet food often contains body parts from dead, dying or diseased animals," according to My Strange Addiction.

Former Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse has expressed his fears for Andrew Krakouer and admitted he is trying to contact the troubled Magpies forward.

back [or] live with their grandparents from time to time? I'm not 100 per cent sure. I hope so for his sake, but stranger things have happened. Malthouse, who as coach of the Collingwood brought Krakouer to the club ahead of the 2010 draft, says he wants to contact the diminutive forward who shone in the Magpies' run to the Grand Final and picked up the 2011 Mark of the Year award. Krakouer, who previously played for Richmond, made his AFL comeback with the 'Pies after serving a jail term for assault. "It's not about football, this is about life," Malthouse said. "If he comes back to football - well and good - but I want to get in touch on the humanity thing, not so much the football thing. "I want to make contact with him, he's such a beautiful kid."

Malthouse fears for Krakouer

Stewart nearly back to best

Manly coach Geoff To o v e y s a y s B r e t t Stewart is leaps and bounds ahead of where his fitness was at this point last season and he expects the NRL will see the best of the star fullback in 2012 following an injury-free preparation.
Stewart, who missed the 2009 and 2010 seasons with successive knee injuries that threatened his career, returned in a big way last season to resume his role as the crucial cog in Manly's backline. The 26-year-old also regained his mantle as the Sea Eagles' major try-scoring weapon, crossing for 15 tries from 20 games in 2011, including four in the finals, as he gained confidence in his game and his knees. And while that was short of his 22 tries in 2008 and 21 in 2006, Toovey believes Stewart will find another gear in the coming season. "He is leaps and bounds ahead of where he was this time last year," he said. "He finished the year off in sizzling form. I think he's actually looking forward to starting a season where he's not encumbered by injury. "It was a very traumatic injury in the sense that there were lots of doubts about whether he with his athleticism and whether he could reach his top speeds again. "But I think he's worked very hard on it and the medical staff have worked very hard on it. "He's back to his best." The Sea Eagles will take on Leeds this Saturday (AEDT) in the World Club Challenge, where Stewart will again play a major role in Manly's attack. And Toovey admits Manly would have struggled to win last year's premiership had it not been for such a successful comeback by Stewart. "You don't win grand finals without a potent backline," he said. "And we got that from the likes of Brett and Jamie Lyon. If you take a player like Brett out of that team, then it does reduce that potential.

The winner of the final stage of qualifying then meets the fourth-placed team in the North and Central American region (CONCACAF) on a home and away basis in November 2013 for a place in Brazil. "We have a job to do," Herbert added. "The focus is reaching Brazil twice and to do that we have to keep winning games on the longest qualification path we've had since 1982. "We start from a better base this year than we did in 2005 and with a full strength side against Jamaica ... I'm sure the public and the teams keeping tabs on us in the CONCACAF region will be keen to see what sort of marker we lay down."

Essendon has banned Michael Hurley from discussing his future, while staying confident they can keep him from the clutches of AFL expansion team Greater Western Sydney.
The tall utility is a key target for the Giants, who are in the second year of their recruiting concessions. Hurley comes out of contract at the end of this season and if GWS can convince him to move north, there is nothing the Bombers can do about it. He was circumspect about the issue when he spoke on Tuesday morning at the launch of the NAB Cup pre-season competition. "I'm contracted until the end of the year so when I know something I will let you know," he said. Essendon football manager Paul Hamilton said the club did not want Hurley - a prime target for the Giants - discussing his situation. "We're in talks with a number of

this season. Hamilton said the Bombers wanted to "invest in the youth and get some young leaders coming through the club." "I'm sure he would like to stay," Hamilton said of Hurley. He added that Hurley, who can play centre half-forward or centre half-back, had overcome a minor preseason injury issue and would line up at some stage in the NAB Cup. "He had a small hamstring strain but he's good," Hamilton said. "He won't play this week but he'll play during the NAB Cup ... he's travelling really well. "He's back in full training now and there shouldn't be any reason why he can't play a couple of NAB Cup games in preparation for the season."

Herbert tied down until 2014

Ricki Herbert is set to become the longest serving coach of New Zealand after he signed a contract extension through until the end of the 2014 World Cup campaign.
Herbert, who combines his position with leading A-League outfit Wellington Phoenix, was appointed as head coach in 2005 and has been in charge for 39 'A' internationals, and 45 matches in total. He guided the side to the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa where it surprised pundits by finishing the tournament unbeaten. The contract extension means he will surpass John Adshead's record of 55 matches in charge and the seven-year tenure held by Ken Armstrong. "Obviously the numbers are nice to reflect on but at the end of your career," Herbert said in a statement. Bennett delighted with Buderus' return

Newcastle coach Wayne Bennett says having veteran Danny Buderus return to the club is better than he imagined.
Buderus has returned to the Knights after spending three seasons playing for English Super League club Leeds. The Knights and Penrith played out an 18-18 draw in their preseason trial game over the weekend. Bennett says Buderus' form is excellent leading into the season and he will be in the run-on side for the first game. "Danny has been exceptional at training and attitude around the place and I'm really pleased he came back," he said. "I didn't have any doubts at the Mullen will play in the halves with skipper Kurt Gidley, while Darius Boyd will play at full-back and Buderus at hooker. Bennett says Mullen has trained well all offseason and is prepared for a big year. "Watching him at training and seeing what he does around the club, he's spot on with everything he does," he said. "He's got a lot of bases covered and he just needs to convert that into playing on the football field. "By the way we are going to play and the way I coach I can't see anything that's going to prohibit him from showing us what he can really do."
