Exposure Through Art Competitions

Someone recently asked me why artists enter American Artists annual cover
competition (page 18), and the various competitions organized by artists
societies, museums, and galleries. My answer was that most artists are anxious to present their work outside of their immediate communities; and
competitions offer a viable chance at exposure, prize money, and assessments of their work. For example, I recently participated in juries that
awarded tens of thousands of dollars in prize money, that selected paintings
to be reproduced in handsome catalogues and shown in national touring
exhibitions, and that discovered artists worthy of being profiled in our magazines. Im certain the artists who received those honors benefited greatly
from the recognition, exposure, and awards.
Of course the benefits vary from one competition to another. Some societies make no effort to publicize their shows to collectors or critics, and
some judges reward their friends and students without concern for being
fair or impartial. Fortunately those situations are not common, and most of
the competitions I have been involved with have been organized and judged
by people sincerely interested in presenting an outstanding exhibition of
artwork. If anything, I am amazed at the amount of work undertaken by
volunteers to ensure that their shows are beneficial to the artists who participate and the visitors who view the artwork.
Recent issues of American Artist, Watercolor, and Drawing magazines have
included articles on artists we discovered in juried art competitions, including
ones weve organized, ones from which we received color catalogues, or ones
we were involved in judging. For example, I discovered Colin J. Callahan
(page 28) and Pauline Roche (page 62) in an art competition I judged.
Neither artist won one of the few awards available, but I was impressed
enough with their artwork that I commissioned articles on both of them.
I would strongly recommend that you enter three or four art competitions a year to see how your work stacks up against other entries, and to
have a real chance at national exposure and significant prize money. Just
remember that judging artwork is a subjective process, and one judge
might reject your pictures while another could select it for a top prize.
