INTRODUCTION 1. Rationale of the thesis Nowadays, tourism plays a very important part in the economy and the culture of Viet Nam as well. The Vietnamese Party and Government have made strong focus on tourism development, aiming to make tourism a spearhead industry, exploiting effectively the advantages in natural and ecological conditions and rich cultural and historical traditions. Among those advantages of Viet Nam tourism, it can be said that traditional trade villages is a great potential to be exploited. Yearly, sixty percent of eight hundred million tourists in the world choose to go on cultural-traditional trade village tours

. Viet Nam with more

than two thousand traditional trade villages, hence, can become an attracting destination for many tourists if it applies efficiently the model of trade village tourism. In fact, many traditional trade villages in Viet Nam have applied this model but few can get a good result. One of the typical examples which successfully apply trade village tourism model is Bat Trang village. While many traditional trade villages are dying out, and many others fail to implement tourism, the success the story of Bat Trang village in carrying out the trade village tourism model is worth studying. Therefore, I decide to choose Solutions for developing the model of trade village tourism in Bat Trang as the topic for my graduation thesis.

2. Objective of the thesis Basing on analysis of the model of trade village tourism in Bat Trang , using SWOT analysis and forecast about the world trend of tourism, the objective of this thesis is to give solutions and recommendations at the macro and micro level to the development of trade village tourism in Bat Trang in particular, and all other trade villages in Viet Nam in general. 3. Duties of the thesis To reach the objective above, the duties need fulfilling in this thesis include: giving an overview of trade village tourism model with its history and development; studying the objectives and the requirements of trade village tourism; giving an overview of trade village tourism model in Bat Trang and the characteristics of Bat Trang; from that giving a SWOT analysis of trade village tourism in Bat Trang and; a case study of a village successful with the model of trade village tourism; expressing opinions of The Party and The Government about developing that model; and then giving solutions and recommendations for developing the model of trade village tourism. 4. Research methodology I apply both desk research and field research to have a precise and objective study. On the one hand, I find information about Bat Trang and other necessary information for the thesis through websites, magazines and books. On the other hand, I myself do go to Bat Trang for observation to have a clearer view of tourism in this trade village. I also study more through interviews and surveys on tourists, students and people living in Ha Noi and coming to Ha Noi to evaluate the popularity of Bat Trang, the quality of tourist services there. 5. Scale and focus of the thesis The thesis does not focus on studying aspects of pottery production in Bat Trang but aspects of tourism there, which are the potential of developing tourism, the

quality of tourist services there and effects that the tourism has on Bat Trang and other relating issues. 6.
