Elizabeth Blackwell was the first female doctor in America and the first on the UK medical register. She was the first woman identified to graduate from medical school, and was also known as a pioneer for educating women in medicine in America. Anton van Leeuwenhoek is known as the father of microbiology. He imporved the microscope which made it able for him to observe single celled organisms, muscle fibers, bacteria, and blood flow in capillaries. Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist. He founded the discipline of psychoanalysis which is a therapeutic process used to treat patients with psychopathology. Joseph Lister was a british surgeon and a pioneer of anitseptic surgery. He pushed the idea of steril surgery and introduced carbolic acid, now known as phenol. This substance is used to serilise surgical equipment and to clean wounds. His discovery made surgery safer for patients and reduced postoperative infections. William Harvey was an English physician. He was the first person to describe in detail the systemic circulation and the properties of blood being pumped through the body by the heart. Florence Nightingale was an English nurse who tended to wounded soldiers durin the Crimean War. She laid the foundation of professional nursing by establishing her nursing school at St Thomas' Hospital in London in 1860. Hippocrates is an ancient Greek physician. He is considered one of the best firgures in the history of medicine. He can be known as the father of Western medicine in recognition of his lasting contributions to medicine. He is also the founder of Hippocratic School of Medicine. The school revolutionized medicine in ancient Greece and established medicine as a seperate profession. Louis Pasteur was a French chemist and microbiologist. He is known for his influence in the causes and preventions of diseases. He created the first vaccine for rabies and anthrax. Edward Jenner was an English scientist and was known as the pioneer of the smallpox vaccine. Sir Alexander Fleming was a Scottish biologist and pharmalogist. He is best known for his discoveries of the enzyme lysozyme and the antibiotic substance penicillin found in the mould Penicillium notatum. Jonas Salk was an American medical researcher and virologist. He is well known for his discovery and development of the first safe and effective polio vaccine. Benjamin Franklin along with his friend, Dr. Thomas Bond, they opened the Pennsylvania Hospital which was the first hospital in what would later become America. Clara Barton was a nurse during the civil war. She then started the American Red Cross, which respond to crisis other than just war.
