Joseph College Cavite City Institute of health Sciences CLINICAL TEACHING PLAN ON GERONTOLOGY Description: This clinical teaching plan will serve as a guide for the faculty/clinical instructor and students in developing the core competencies required of during the care of Geriatric client. Medical-Surgical Ward, Obstetric-Gynecologic Ward, Operating-Delivery Room, Pediatric Ward and Emergency Room, Special Institutions for Greatrics 24 Hrs.

Area of Exposure: Duration: Entry Competencies:

Knowledge on the concept of Gerontology, its history ans Evolution, Anatomy and Physiology, Nursing Process, Pharmacology, Principles of Bio-Ethics Skills in doing Nursing Plan especially in the care and management of older population Identify the demographic profile of the older population Identify the different theories of aging Assess geriatric clients according to the theory developed by the different theorists Identify factors that have influence on health and illness Skills in rendering effective management in the care of geriatric clients Identify legal and ethical issues pertaining to the care of older population Renders pharmacologic intervention Decision making skills/critical thinking skills Desirable attitude of patience, empathy, accuracy, and gentleness in dealing/caring of geriatric clients Orientation Activities for Clinical Instructors: Must have been completed prior to students exposure in coordination with the affiliating training hospital officer or hospital chief nurse for 1 week depending on hospital protocol. Orientation Activities for Students:

Must be accomplished before the actual exposure of the students or on the first day of the clinical exposure. Orientation on the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Reviews with the students the importance of the management of resources and the environment in accordance with the guidelines.

Prepares the supplies needed: y Medicine tray with lining, medicines glasses, medicine cards, syringes, alcohol, container Assists the students in prioritizing activities of cotton balls with alcohol, in order to finish the works on time. container for soiled cotton balls, etc.

III. Health Education Implements appropriate health education activities to clients based on the assessment of needs. Reviews the teaching plan of the students.
