MAN ARRESTED for BREAK & ENTER on LOCKE STREET SOUTH:

The KNA is happy to report that on January 11th, 2012, Hamilton Police Service arrested a man they believe to be responsible for the commercial entries on Locke Street and Dundurn Street. Hamilton Police Service released the following statement: On Dec 27th, 2011 at approximately 1am, a suspect smashed the front window of the Starbucks coffee shop located at 158 Locke St South and entered the store through the smashed out window. The suspect went behind to the counter to the area of the cash register and rummaged through cabinets and drawers. This was captured on the store surveillance system. The suspect fled prior to police arrival. The Hamilton Police Service BEAR Unit continued to investigate. On January 11th, 2012 at approximately 5:00am, Hamilton Police Service plainclothes officers were in the area of Locke Street South when Darrin BRUSH, a person of interest relating to the Starbucks entry, was spotted. He was stopped by Police and found to be holding a large rock in his hand and wearing clothing that was similar to the clothing worn during the Starbucks entry. Darrin BRUSH, 36 yrs. of Hamilton was arrested and held for a bail hearing with a charge of Break and Enter with Intent. The investigation is ongoing and further charges are expected. The KNA would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the officers that worked on this project.

Notes from the CRIME ISSUES MEETING January 10th, 2012

Approximately 80 people from the community attended our Crime Issues meeting held on January 10th. Included in the crowd were many local residents and business owners. Several police officers were also in attendance: Acting Inspector Mark Cox, Sgt. Scott Moreton, (the new crime manager for our area), local beat officer, P.C. Ryan Komadowski as well as Cst. Steve Mahler of the Crime Prevention Unit. The officers stressed that any incident of possible crime should be reported to Hamilton Police Services at the non-emergency number (905) 546-4952. (For example, if your car is entered and searched but nothing taken, you should still take time to report it as this helps police to establish patterns in the area.) When calling, you should be as descriptive as possible in explaining suspicious activity. Trespassing concerns of any kind should be reported to Sgt. Moreton: smoreton@hamiltonpolice.on.ca Regarding the recent rise in commercial crime in Kirkendall neighbourhod (i.e. rock-throwing incidents on Dundurn/Locke Streets), the police officers advised that a four-pronged program was put into effect to combat the issue: -BEAR unit - Break, Enter, Auto Theft, Robbery -Plainclothes officers working with the BEAR unit -Regular beat officers -The ACTION team, including the mounted unit

P.C. Ryan Komadowski, Sergeant Scott Moreton, Constable Steve Mahler, A/Insp. Mark Cox and Ward One Councillor Brian McHattie attended the meeting.

Police officers also advised that nighttime surveillance in the area had been increased (for businesses in particular). As well, police have recently completed a successful project called Just Clause which was put in place to address theft from autos over the December holiday period. One objective of crime prevention is to make personal property, residences and business premises tougher targets. Taking some care and incorporating security measures or other improvements can reduce the likelihood of a criminal identifying your location as an easy target. Therefore, people are advised not to leave anything in their cars. (i.e. loose change, GPS, CDs, shopping bags etc.) Constable Mahler also mentioned Operation Safeguard where specially trained Hamilton Police Service Auxiliary members conduct free home security audits in residential areas. These audits aim to educate homeowners on ways to Target Harden their homes against potential Break and Enters and vandalism such as graffiti. To receive a free residential Safeguard Audit, please contact the HPS Auxiliary Branch at (905) 546-4929. On behalf of residents and local businesses, the KNA would like to thank the attending officers for a very informative evening.

Approximately 80 residents & local business reps attended the Crime Issues meeting on Jan 10th.

Crime Manager: Sgt. Scott Moreton

Hello from your Division One Crime Manager! My name is Sergeant Scott Moreton and as of January 2012, I have been assigned as the Crime Manager for a geographic area the Hamilton Police refer to as "West Town". The area covers West of Queen Street to far end of Main St W prior to Dundas and the Mountain Brow to the waterfront (which includes the Strathcona, Ainsliewood, Westdale & Kirkendall neighbourhoods). I have completed twelve years in policing which have been all completed in our Division One area (which includes "West Town"). I have positions in uniform patrol, community services, and core patrol and for the past three years, I worked out of the Criminal Investigative Division. I had the fortune of obtaining the rank of Sergeant in September of 2011. Part of the role of the Crime Manager is to address crime trends that occur in the neighbourhoods that fall under "West Town". For a recent example of what that means, there was a spike in break and enter incidents to Commercial/ Business locations in the Kirkendall Neighbourhood. Because of this crime trend, we were able to re-deploy uniform officers, our BEAR unit, plain clothes and the mountain unit to the area. Within one day of the community meeting about the issue, the male responsible for the spree was arrested. I ask all of you that if you are a victim of a crime, any crime whatsoever, that you report it to the non-emergency line of the Hamilton Police Service at (905) 546-4925. In order for the police to respond effectively to crimes in your community, we need to have the statistics to verify the issues that have occurred. If you have any questions or wish to contact me directly, they best way to reach me is through email at smoreton@hamiltonpolice.on.ca or you can call my office at (905) 540-5093. Looking forward to a great 2012! KNA & OPEN STREETS HAMILTON need your help! Open Streets brings neighbours together from all over the city to celebrate both our downtown and our commitment to a healthier lifestyle. Were looking for someone who is interested in representing the KNA on the Open Streets Hamilton (OSH) committee. For more information about the position please contact Peg Kelly: pegkelly@sympatico.ca

Brian McHattie, Ward One Councillor, Chedoke Cootes

arrested two people recently who were allegedly responsible for the car break-ins in Kirkendall and the vandalism of businesses on Locke and Dundurn Streets. I encourage you to report all incidences to the police (905-546-4925), so they can identify when trends start to develop and can allocate the necessary resources. There are a number of construction projects underway or in the planning stages including Aberdeen and Dundurn, Allenby Lofts Part II, and the condominium project in the former Asian grocery store. The Development Review Committee of the Kirkendall Neighbourhood Association is doing a good job at reviewing the proposals. Unfortunately, there isnt anything new to report on 220 Dundurn. We continue to ask Municipal Law Enforcement to enforce our property standards by-laws; however no development applications have been submitted to the city yet. I encourage you to support the Kirkendall Neighbourhood Association by buying a membership and attending general meetings. Please contact my office if you have questions at 905-546-2416 or brian.mcmattie@hamilton.ca.

The Kirkendall neighbourhood is a busy place these days! The KNA has begun work on a Neighbourhood Strategic Plan. I think it is a great idea and I encourage you to get involved. There are a number of transportation-related improvements in Kirkendall including a new pedestrian light at Aberdeen and Kent (to be installed in Summer 2012) and a new No Left Turn prohibition from Queen Street to Stanley Avenue during the morning rush hour (an 18 month pilot project starting in the Spring). Ive been working with the Dundurn Fortinos to make some changes to their parking lot to make it safer and friendlier to both pedestrians and cyclists. The Strathcona Transportation Management Plan is looking into ways to improve safety at Main and Dundurn. A public meeting will be held to gather your feedback and suggestions. A new Dundurn HSR bus route is planned. I had hoped that it would be in place by September 2012, but unfortunately that has been put off until 2013. In the meantime, we will be working on the exact route and will hold a public meeting to get your feedback. I was pleased to hear that Hamilton Police Service
