Introduction About Rajbanshis

SORA: Arun Rajbanshi/ Ghailadubba:-

During 1600 A.D, before the reign of king prithvi Narayan Shah Jhapa district was known as underdeveloped Kalapani. There was no any government facility provided to this area. The people living here had to struggle with the deadly diseases like Malaria, chicken pox, Dysentery, choleria, Tuberculosis etc. At that period Rajbanshi, Dhimal, Santhal, Tajpuriya, Meche, Gangai were the inhabitant residing in this area and among these ethnic people Rajbanshi were large in number. Rajbanshi peoples have their own ethnic identification. Rajbanshi ethnic group had a leading role in economic, linguistic, cultural and religious field. In society there were no any other non-indegenous tribes like brahamins, kshetris. The other tribe peoples use to come here temporarily for selling chile

and use to go back again after few days because they were frightened of the fatal diseases. The peoples from outside use to believe that if they even point their finger towards this area their finger also may dacay by getting some sort of disease. There was one popular proverb at that time, if you buy rice of one rupee in Jhapa you can live here for life time and that rice shall remain after the death also for cremenatory rituals. At 2025 B.S United States of America organized Malaria Eradication programme in this area, then after this place turned into residential area. Because of which peoples from different places migrated here. All the land of this place was of indigenous peoples so the foreign migrants adopted different methods to confisticate the lands of simple, innocent and illiterate indigenous people who were unknown about their conspiracy. Even the government and the government officials took the agvantage of these indigenous people and exploited them by giving unnecessary punishment and also confisticated their land in the name of legal punishment. The case of exploitation by government took apex on 2021 B.S when the government decleared Land Reform Law according to which indigenous people were compelled to give their land to the government as the limitation of land ownership was only 28 bigha per individual. The captured land from indigenous people were distributed among non- indigenous people, foreign migrants, brahamins and kshtris and even the government officials made these lands in their own ownership but the landless peoples among indigenous group were not provided any land at that time. Before 2021 B.S ninty percent of Rajbanshi peoples were owner of more than 200 bighas of land per household but after 2021 B.S, Economic policy of Panchayat, 2046 B.S multiparty Democracy now hardly ten percent Rajbanshi peoples are owning some land. Now, again the government is planning to implement revolutionary land reform which is in totally non-beneficial to the indigenous people. The inhuman Jamindari system during 2007 B.S also turned the indigenous peoples to become poor because of immoral punishments of jamindars due to which the indigenous people were compelled to quit their land and move towards the safe place for livelihood. Therefore Rajbanshi peoples are expecting proper Justice and Compensation for the exploitation of rights by the government. The Special rights with compensation and a secular state with selfdeciding rights to Rajbanshi people should be mentioned in the constitution of New Nepal. Also we are seeking support inorder to maintain prosperity and progress in our ethnicity from national and international organization for our rights.
