Summary During the early 1980s, analog cellular telephone systems were experiencing rapid growth in Europe. in 1982 the CEPT formed a study group called the Groupe Spcial Mobile (GSM) to study and develop a European public land mobile system. The proposed system had to meet certain criteria (good subjective speech quality, low terminal and service cost etc.). The GSM network can be divided into three broad parts mobile station, base station subsystem and network subsystem. A GSM mobile can seamlessly roam nationally and internationally, which requires that registration, authentication, call routing and location updating functions exist and are standardized in GSM networks. In addition, the fact that the geographical area covered by the network is divided into cells necessitates the implementation of a handover mechanism.
