Rains less for Rio Grande do Sul

Drought has taken its toll on Parana, Brazil, but now, a rare wet period has begun, with near daily rainfall expected over the next 7 days, also reaching parched Paraguay, too.

Rain for parched Parana over the next 10 days, initially in northern regions.

Parana produces 20% of Brazils soybeans, 50% of its wheat, and 30% of its second crop corn.

This season, drought conditions have been severe in Parana, spreading across 50% of the region and reducing its soybean output by potentially more than 30%. A near-term wet period has now begun, benefiting late beans and safrinha corn planting.

Since Feb 1rains have been lightest in W and NC Parana so far this month, leaving less than 1 inch. C and E areas received heavier accumulations of 1-4 inches.

February rains have helped South Brazil (greens), but stressed areas (red) still show on the latest satellite remote sensing (Feb 18), particularly over W Parana, W and SW Rio

Compared to last year, deterioration (brown) has occured in Rio Grande do Sul, Parana, Paraguay and SE Mato Grosso do Sul. Vegetation in eastern areas appear better than last year (blue).

Possibly the best rains of the growing season are headed for Parana, particularly in the parched western areas. SW Rio Grande do Sul will remain dry during this period, seeing less than 0.10 inches there.
