About the Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship award is in honor and memory of Special Agent and Major Michael Edward Weston (December 29, 1971 - October 26, 2009). Major Michael Edward Weston, 37, of Washington, D.C., died in a helicopter crash in western Afghanistan on Oct. 26, 2009, where he was serving as an agent for the US Drug Enforcement Agency. He previously served several tours of active duty in Iraq and other war zones as a Major in the United States Marine Corps. Born in Los Angeles, he was the son of retired Alston & Bird partner, Steven W. Weston. This scholarship fund has been established in memory of Mike Weston and his dedicated service to our country. ****Outdoor Home Makeover**** Do you live in Orange County, California? Do you own your own home? Do you need some help with those pesky outdoor fix-it projects such as painting your house, weed removal, fixing a broken fence, garage organization, planting flowers or improving your overall curb appeal?
We can help! We have a community group that wants to assist a military family that needs some help in the "fix-it" and curb appeal department. This program is restricted to military families within Orange County who own their home. Additionally, the service member must be active duty, activated Reserve or Title 10 Activated Guard with pay grades E1-E6. Entries will be accepted until February 29, 2012 at 12:00 pm. You will be contacted via email and phone by April 4, 2012 if you are selected to participate. Project Outdoor Home Makeover will take place on April 21st and you must be available that day if you are chosen. Please do not enter if you are not available on that day. We have a community group that wants to assist a military family that needs some gently used furniture pieces used at a recent home expo (couch, loveseat and coffee table, additional items may be added but are not guaranteed). This program is restricted to military families within San Diego County and within a 1 hour driving distance from Coronado who are active duty, activated Reserve or Title 10 activated Guard with pay grades E1-E6). Entries will be accepted until March 16, 2012 at 12:00 pm. You will be contacted via email by April 6, 2012 only if you are selected to receive the furniture. Furniture Giveaway will take place on April 20 and you must be available that day if you are chosen. Please do not enter if you are not available on that day. LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS Calling all volunteers! If you are interested in volunteering with MALS-16, whether it is to bake cookies, help with events, put together welcome folders, or send package abroad, we are looking for you. There is no training required to be a volunteer. Please contact Julia Gwynn at 577-6399 or Julia.gwynn@usmc.mil. If you are interested in joining the Family Readiness Team as an advisor or assistant, please contact Angel DeLuz at 858-577-1322 to register for training. Once you have completed the Family Readiness Asst/Adv training, you and I can sit down and go over the ins and outs of being a part of the team. WHAT EVENTS DO YOU WANT!!! Let your voice be heard. We are looking for ideas for family day/unit events.
