Ireland is situated on the eastern seaboard of the North Atlantic with easy access to pristine, deepwater marine habitats

and varied majestic coastlines. The country has a rich cultural heritage with strong connections to the sea. The Irish Marine Summer School is a new and innovative offering from the Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training (SMART) which provides quality multidisciplinary training courses for students of marine-related sciences. The Summer School is unique in providing access to training on state of the art research vessels. The 2012 International Marine Summer School (IMSS) is based in the historic and cultural maritime cities of Galway and Cork, located in west and southwest Ireland. The IMSS courses are accredited by two premier marine research Universities in Ireland, National University of Ireland Galway and University College Cork. While it is possible to attend one course it is highly recommended that students enrol in both to achieve the full benefit of training in the diverse environments of the west and south of Ireland and to avail of the wide range of research and training opportunities along the Irish coastline. By attending both courses over a four week period, participants will have the opportunity to interact closely with expert marine scientists, professionals and naval personnel and will gain first hand experience of research at sea and the analysis and interpretation of marine data.

International Marine Summer School

The Irish Marine Environment JUNE 14 JULY 12, 2012

Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training (SMART) The International Marine Summer School is an initiative of the Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training (SMART), a partnership programme of Irish Higher Education Institutes that provides accredited, training programmes for national and International students of marine science, technology and engineering. Additional partners within SMART include:

EV3011: The Marine Environment and its Sustainable Use.
Dates: Directors: Location: June 14 27, 2012 Prof. John Benzie and Dr. Andrew Wheeler, University College Cork Cork and South Coast of Ireland

Course 2
SU416: Galway Bay's Atlantic Margin: Marine, Earth Science and Cultural Perspectives.
Dates: Directors: Location: June 29 July 12, 2012 Prof. Martin Feely and Dr. Martin White, National University of Ireland Galway Galway and West Coast of Ireland

Academic Programme
Academic direction of the Summer School will be provided jointly by NUI Galway and University College Cork. Students will be registered at both Universities.

Accreditation
Each course carries 10 ECTS Credits/5 Semester Hour Credits at undergraduate level. (Level 8, Irish National Framework of Qualifications). Total credits offered for the 4-week Summer School is 20 ECTS/10 Semester Hour Credits. Accreditation for each course will be awarded, and transcripts will be issued, by the host institution. For students who successfully complete both courses, a Certificate of Completion will be issued jointly by the two accrediting Universities. Successful completion of Personal Survival Techniques (PST) training in Course 1 (EV3011) also leads to the award of an internationally recognised (STCW95) maritime qualification, generally required for work on offshore research vessels.

Cork is the site of one of the largest natural harbours in the world, close to the spectacular coastlines of southern Ireland, the site of novel research in marine resources and renewable energy, near the location of the historic wreck of the Lusitania and the last port of call of the Titanic. The module offers students the opportunity to study the rich marine environment of the region in the context of understanding the nature of marine resources, how these are impacted, and the ways in which these can be sustainably used. Students will gain experience of maritime practice in state of the art, 360 degree ship and ocean simulators, and in Personal Survival Techniques (PST) in the environmental pool, at the National Maritime College of Ireland, prior to participating in a multidisciplinary study of local marine environments. This will encompass marine geology, marine biology, fisheries, oceanography, environmental law, ocean management and marine renewable energies.

This course will involve a comprehensive geoscientific, marine, cultural and historical study of Galway Bay. Galway Bay on the west coast of Ireland boasts spectacular glacial landscapes and seascapes together with many accessible offshore islands surrounded by the pristine waters of the North Atlantic. The Galway Bay course offers students the opportunity to study the geological and oceanographic processes that have shaped the natural landscape. The rich maritime and cultural heritage of this region will be explored through its archaeology, history, literature, poetry and music associations.

Teaching Methods
Teaching will be by means of lectures, seminars and guided discussions. Practical fieldwork and marine based research will be a central feature of the programme. A combination of lectures and sea-going and terrestrial fieldtrips around Galway Bay, Cork Harbour and the surrounding coasts will allow for student participation at all levels. PST training is undertaken in an indoor environmental pool. (If for any reason a person is unable to undertake the PST course, there is an opt-out alternative.) Students will gain first-hand experience of maritime practice onboard the marine research vessel, RV Celtic Voyager.
Students will participate in a multifaceted marine survey of Galway Bay. Onshore and island fieldtrips will explore the natural history and archaeology of the region including a visit to the unique Cliffs of Moher and the Connemara and Burren landscapes. Literature, poetry and music traditions of the region will be celebrated and explored using key locations in the Bay area for lectures and cultural fieldtrips. Topics

Faculty
Faculty will be mainly from NUI Galway, University College Cork and the National Maritime College of Ireland. Guest lecturers from SMART partner institutions will also contribute to the courses.

Conor Ryan IWDG

Prospective Students
Prospective students should have completed sophomore year. Some knowledge of life and/or environmental sciences would be an advantage. Students can opt to take either course within the Summer School but are advised to take both.

Students will gain a practical knowledge of multidisciplinary marine data collection and learn how marine resources are used locally. Fieldtrips will explore the natural history, marine and cultural heritage of the region. This will include visits to mussel and fish farms on the south coast, to historical Irish coastal towns and villages, and mapping the wreck of the Lusitania. Topics 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Methods of biological and geological resource assessment Fisheries and aquaculture Governance, legal frameworks and spatial planning Renewable ocean energies Shipping, communications and safety at sea

1. Methods of marine oceanographic data acquisition and analysis 2. Irish maritime heritage and cultural studies 3. History of Early Christian settlements on western seaboard of Europe 4. Landscape analyses geology and climate change perspectives 5. Mariculture and intertidal zone studies

Accommodation
Accommodation will be arranged at local university student residences in Cork and Galway for each course.
