Title: Photosynthesis Type: An Audio-Based Material Script: D.V. Rogayan Jr.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------BIZ: NARRATOR: MUSIC UP AND UNDER FOR This is a lesson about photosynthesis and how it takes place. At the end of the lesson, you should be able to: 1. Define photosynthesis; 2. Identify the raw materials needed for photosynthesis; 3. Illustrate the process of photosynthesis; and 4. Appreciate the significance of photosynthesis.

Before proceeding with this lesson, be sure that you have the following: Ballpen or pencil Response sheet

When you hear this sound (SFX), turn off your tape. BIZ: NARRATOR: MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND UNDER FOR Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use the energy from sunlight to produce sugar, which cellular respiration converts into adenosine triphosphate or ATP which serves as the fuel used by all living things.

- more -

Photosynthesis may be the most important process in ecosystems, for it both brings in energy needed within the ecosystem, and produce oxygen needed for cellular respiration, and the production of more ATP.

Now on your paper, define in your own words, the term photosynthesis. (SFX) BIZ: NARRATOR: BABY PLANT: DAD PLANT: BABY PLANT: DAD PLANT: MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND UNDER FOR One sunny day, a baby plant and his daddy plant are talking in the field. Dad, Im hungry! Then start photosynthesizing. The sun is shining bright, use it. I know, I know. But my leaves need rest you know. Your leaves dont get tired. They are meant to photosynthesize. Do you know how important we are to this world to go on? Let me explain.

BIZ: DAD PLANT:

MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND UNDER FOR Plants are very important to people. All food that people eat comes directly or indirectly from plants. For example, apple comes from an apple tree. The flour which used to make bread comes from a wheat plant. Chevon, the meat that comes from goat. And we all know that goats are animals, not plants right?

BABY PLANT: DAD PLANT:

Yes, dad, youre right. But what does the goat eat?

- more -

BABY PLANT: DAD PLANT: BABY PLANT: DAD PLANT:

Plants. It eats grass and hay. So all the food which people and animals eat comes from plant. But, what do we, plants, eat? We make our own food.

BIZ: DAD PLANT:

MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND UNDER FOR Plants need several things to make their own food. Plants get their raw materials for photosynthesis from the soil, the air and the sun. When it rains water gets absorbed in the soil. The plants take the water from the soil through its roots.

BIZ: DAD PLANT:

MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND UNDER FOR In the roots there are tubes. The cambium, the xylem and the phloem. The xylem lies towards the interior part of the root whereas the phloem lies toward the exterior part of the root. These tubes help in bringing water and minerals from the soil to its leaves.

NARRATOR:

Now on your worksheet, write the functions of the cambium, xylem and the phloem in plants. (SFX)

DAD PLANT:

Leaves breathe in carbon dioxide from tiny pores which are called stomata which are in the underside of the leaf.

Now that we have carbon dioxide and water, we are ready for photosynthesis, right? BABY PLANT: NARRATOR: Wrong! We are missing the most important ingredient the sun. Now on your worksheet, identify the raw materials needed before the photosynthesis starts. (SFX) BIZ: MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND UNDER FOR

DAD PLANT:

Now, the process will start. It is in the leaves of the plant that most of the action takes place. If we cut a leaf and see it under a microscope, we see the right below the outer layer of cells, there is a layer of soft elongated cells called mesophyll cells.

NARRATOR:

Now on your worksheet, write the role of the leaves in photosynthesis. (SFX)

BIZ: DAD PLANT:

MUSIC UP FOR 2 SECONDS AND UNDER FOR Inside the mesophyll cells, are tiny nodes which are called chloroplasts. Chloroplasts contain special chemical called chlorophyll. It is the chlorophyll that colors the leaves green.

- more -

NARRATOR:

Now on your worksheet, give the function of the chlorophyll in plants. (SFX)

BIZ: DAD PLANT:

MUSIC UP FOR 2 SECONDS AND UNDER FOR When the light energy from the sun is captured by the chloroplast, it is stored in stocks called a granum found in the thylakoid membrane. In these membranes, the chemical reactions of photosynthesis take place.

NARRATOR:

Now on your worksheet, write the function of the thylakoid membrane. (SFX)

BIZ: DAD PLANT:

MUSIC UP FOR 2 SECONDS AND UNDER FOR So, remember, carbon dioxide plus water plus sun, gives you glucose plus oxygen. The glucose or sugar is the food which the plant has made for itself and is distributed to all part of its body. And oxygen is a waste gas which the plants breathe out. People and animals use this oxygen to breathe and continue living.

BABY PLANT:

Now, I know Dad. Im going to photosynthesize to satisfy my hunger now.

NARRATOR:

Now on your worksheet, write a simple formula that illustrates photosynthesis. (SFX)

NARRATOR:

Photosynthesis plays a vital role in regulating the life cycle on earth. Now you may realize the importance of Photosynthesis every time you breathe in and out and take a look at the plants at your backyard or neighborhood or front garden. The sunlight, water and the plants work together to supply the raw source of energy to us and help us breathe in oxygen to live on. Life without Photosynthesis, would, indeed be impossible.

After answering all the questions, submit now your response sheet to your facilitator. He will inform you later about your score.
