EnerLogic installation Guidelines

LEP35

Thank you for choosing the new EnerLogic Series from Solutia Performance Films. In the summer, it keeps the heat out; in the winter it keeps the heat in. EnerLogic has been shown to provide far superior energy savings than any other window film on the market. Customers achieve a perfect balance of energy efficiency, comfort, and cost savings all year long. However, EnerLogic has unique installation requirements to avoid product damage and installation faults. Further guidance can be found in the Installation Advisory video and Technical Bulletin TBF-74, both available on www.vistatech.com, for full details and explanations. The following important notes and requirements summarise the key handling and installation issues: EnerLogic 35 is a unique 60 microns product with an extremely slow drying time. It has ultra-low emissivity, which can cause glass temperatures to fall more rapidly in colder weather compared to less energy efficient products. A methodical and meticulous approach is needed to (a) preparation and use of the cleaning and installation solutions and (b) the installation process; this ensures maximum water removal and rapid CDF bonding. Failure to do follow the requirements in this document may result in dramatic fingering overnight or long-term pooling of installation solution, permanent blisters, coating failures, and other defects, which may invalidate our warranty. Small contaminate particles, if present can puncture or fracture the multi stacked metals within the film during the squeegee process and in turn produce corrosion to form. Important note: Our warranty is invalid if all the installation requirements are not met.

Working with the new EnerLogic 35 Window Film

a. EnerLogic 35 is for interior glass surface applications only. It must not be installed on plastics, such as acrylic or polycarbonate, or onto the coated surface of coated glass; removal of the film could result in damaging the coating. EnerLogic 35 can however be installed on double or triple glazed units with a coating on surfaces 2 or 3 (double glazing) or surface 2, 3, 4, or 5 (triple glazing). Please refer to Figure 1 for glazing surfaces. You must always consult the Film to Glass Thermal Stress Compatibility Guidelines before any installation. (Low E detectors are available to test glazing for Low E coatings please see the LLumar tool catalogue).

Note: Surface 1 is always towards the exterior

b. You must handle EnerLogic film with care to avoid kinking, creasing, folding or other faults which can fracture the solar and low E layers within the film, causing permanent damage. This damage may become visible on installation or may become apparent some months to years later (often as demetallisation). Our warranty is invalid if the film is damaged in any way. c. EnerLogic 35 is a CDF internal installation film and is supplied with the release liner fitted to the outside of the roll rather than the inside as with many other films. This is in order to protect the film during transport, storage and installation preparation. d. Never use an unwrapped hard card as a squeegee tool. An unwrapped hard card is only to be used to check for residual solution still present at the end of installation. e. Ensure the film is not scratched or damaged during installation.

f. To avoid EnerLogic film rolls overheating, keep them out of direct sunlight. Where possible, minimise installation on sunlit windows and plan installation for shaded windows first. g. Use a 3-Bottle Installation System to avoid the introduction of contaminants, and use only distilled water in all bottles. This will ensure cleanliness and the correct pH for rapid CDF adhesive bonding:
X-100 (or Dirt-Off) at a concentration of 32 ml per litre of distilled water. This is used to clean / scrape / scrub glass. Use a standard mix of Film-On of 3-6 ml (3-6 pumps) per litre of distilled water. Use this solution before applying the film to clean the pane of residual X-100, then squeegee the glass clean. Also use Bottle #2 as squeegee lubricant after film application. Dry all borders with microfiber towels or lint free paper towels. Use a diluted mix of Film-On for film installation of 1 ml (1 pump) of Film-On per litre of distilled water. This solution is essential to accelerate adhesive bonding. Use of any other liquid may delay bonding, especially in cold weather, resulting in installation failure. Never use X-100 (Dirt Off) in Bottle #2 or Bottle #3

Cleaning
Thoroughly clean the glass surface by scrubbing and, if appropriate, blade scraping the glass surface using the solution in Bottle #1.

Installation
Use a 20-76 mm (1-3 inch) diameter core with the reverse roll installation method to avoid damaging the film (see point b above). This will also help to prevent the film roll from telescoping (a sideward unwinding of the film).

Use 3 squeegee tools and 3 squeegee passes

After applying the film to the glass using the solution in Bottle #3, use these tools in this sequence: Unger Pro channel and squeegee Unger Pro handle Slim Blue Max Fusion 5 Handle Narrow Blue Max

First squeegee pass

Use an Unger Pro squeegee handle and 6 inch soft rubber blade with backwards squeegee strokes over the entire pane except for border areas. This removes large air pockets and large moisture puddles, and makes the next two passes more effective.

Second squeegee pass

Use a 6 Slim Blue Max Blade (not the large Blue Max squeegee blade) fitted in an Unger Pro channel and handle to squeegee the film flat to the glass surface using a single firm downward vertical pass, mid-pane). Trim the film edges using a sharp stainless steel blade and edge guide to ensure a small but even gap between the film and gasket or frame about 1-2mm wide; do not trim free-hand. Finish squeegeeing the entire pane using horizontal strokes, overlapping each pass by 50%. This process helps to ensure that excess water does not cause fingers to form, and also provides the gap for sealing the edges of the film.

Third squeegee pass

Use a Fusion 5 Handle with the Narrow Blue Max blade to squeegee the entire pane. It is very important to maintain firm and consistent pressure, hold the squeegee at a fixed angle of 45 to the glass surface, and overlap each squeegee by 50%. (See video). Use a standard hard card wrapped with soft lint free paper towels or a microfibre cloth for fixing the edges down and removing any excess solution.

Edge sealing
You must fully seal the film edges if EnerLogic 35 is installed within 10 km (6 miles) of a salt water body such as lochs, fjords, salt water lakes, seas and oceans. This is done using Goldspar or Compass yacht varnishes from Yacht Paints1 (diluted with 4 parts of solvent to 1 part of varnish), or a neutral cure silicone such as Dow Corning 796. Installers must ensure the products are fit for purpose and are used according to the manufacturers instructions. EnerLogic 35 must not be installed on glass in areas of high humidity or condensation; our warranty is invalid if EnerLogic is installed in these situations.

We recommend use of the SpectraSeal pen when using a varnish diluted with thinner (but not for the application of Dow Corning 796 silicone). This pen allows faster application of the varnish to the films edges than a brush. The film must be sufficiently dry before the application of any sealant. This often means waiting 2-3 hours, but might mean a few days due to the quality of the installation, the slow drying time of EnerLogic 35, and environmental conditions.

Care and maintenance

Fingerprints or other smudges on the film surface after installation can easily be wiped away with a clean, soft microfibre cloth moistened with water. A 20% solution of isopropyl alcohol (IPA, also known as propanol) and 80% distilled water may be used to mist the pane and wipe the film clean, or to moisten a microfibre cloth to wipe the film clean.
