choice, there was another who read my poems, short stories, and articles and believed that my words were entertaining or inspiring enough to be shared with the world. They
urged me to keep writing, to dream big, and to do whatever
it would take to succeed. Those voices served as guideposts
along my path, helping me move forward whenever I questioned my abilities and whether my goal was practical. They
also provided the encouragement I needed to trust my feelings: I came alive when I put words and characters on paper.
I knew I had to honor what I was experiencing.
I had been involved in church my entire life and had
publicly declared my belief in Christ the summer I turned
eight, but during my teens, I found myself more curious
than ever about the Bible and the answers it might hold for
my modern-day life. I remember wondering how Scriptures
written so long ago could be relevant to anything I was facing in high school.
Sure, I was active in my church, and I prayed regularly. I
believed that Jesus loved me. Yet I wrestled with what loving
him back would cost me and with whether I would have the
courage to give up, or pursue, whatever God might ask of me.
I struggled to wrap my brain around messages in the Bible
that declared that a God I couldnt see or touch had the
time and interest to single me out from the millions of other
people who wanted love, attention, and help. And if he were
willing to do that, I wondered whywhat made me special
enough to be noticed? What makes any of us that valuable?
I discovered that when I sincerely asked him which of
the paths I was considering would please him, the more I

the good graces of the right people at the right time. Thin
is still in and so are wealth and youthfulness. Fashion is
celebrated, while faith in God is dismissed or ridiculed.
When I was a high school and college student, fitting
in was a priority for me too. Having the right clothing and
hairstyle mattered. The pop culture of that day, and the
opinions of my friends, were speaking into my life. Then I
realized I was in love, and while I had long been a Christian
and prayed to God for guidance, my special friends opinions
came to matter a great deal. I also had to contend with the
opinions and advice of my family, my college instructors,
and my summer internship bosses.
To the outside world, I was clearly a go-gettera journalism major with strong language skills and an ability to
focus and achieve my academic and extracurricular goals with
excellence. Inside, however, I wasnt much different than my
daughter. Behind my smile and the confident execution of my
academic and journalistic pursuits, I was a shy people-pleaser,
and I wanted to be well liked as much as anybody.
I never compromised my values or my faith, and in fact
I sometimes found myself estranged from acquaintances
because I wouldnt just go with the flow. But others views
still mattered, and I wanted to honor the adults in my life
by making them proud or by proving through my devotion
or hard work that I was worthy of their love and attention.
I told myself that this was my practice with God too.
During that period, when I was acing college, soaring
as a budding writer, holding steady in a long-time, long-
distance romance, and publicly living out my Christian

Becoming intimate with God will take time and commitment. It is a never-ending process that ebbs and flows
with every season of life. This book can be considered a
baby step in the right direction. But each step matters, especially if it brings you closer to the divine Creator. Decide
that you want to hear from him rather than from everyone
or everything else thats clamoring for first place in your life.
When you are certain you are ready to give God that
primary position, tell him so, and let your actions back up
your words. Make time in your schedule to study the Bible
each day, even if only for a few minutes. Carve out time for
more than just a mad-dash morning prayer and really talk to
God instead of simply sharing your wish list with him. Ask
him to help you learn how to quiet your mind and spirit so
you can hear him speaking. Over time, prepare to be blessed.

Matthew 6:33: But seek first his kingdom and his righ
teousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
1Thessalonians 5:17: Pray continually.
Meditate on these Scriptures over the next few days
and memorize them. Read the entire chapters of Matthew
6 and Thessalonians 5 to understand the full context in
which this advice was rendered. Once you have memorized
the verses, turn them into personal prayers, such as, Lord,
help me to seek your kingdom first and trust that you will
provide everything else I need, and, God, please help me
pray throughout the day, trusting that you will guide my
every word and action in ways that bring me closer to you.

yourself, maybe its time to slow down and wait for God
to speak. If youre jogging, maintain your steady pace but
know that only when youre paying attention will you see
and hear what God has to say to you. If youre walking, be
patient. God is grooming you for your season and your time.
Babies survive on milk until their digestive systems are
mature enough to handle soft food, and eventually solids.
Our efforts to know and hear from God are similar: we
begin with simple, gentle instruction and eventually grow
into a more mature relationship. The longer we study his
teachings and dwell in his presence, the better we are able
to understand and handle all he wants to reveal to us. In
my own journey, Ive seen how the more Ive trusted him
and spent time with him, the more comfortable I am with
him, and the freer I feel to be menot perfect, nor holier
than thou, just me.
Ive begun to recognize his sense of humor, his compassion, and even his laid-back lack of worry. Picture Jesus on
the sailboat with his disciples, raising his head as he awakens from a nap and gestures for them to settle down during
a storm: Relax! he urges them. Ive got this! Picture him
telling you this when worry or frustration threaten to overwhelm you. You may have heard the phrase, Since God is
up taking care of the world, we might as well get some sleep
or at least calm down.
The more familiar you become with God, the more
youll find yourself wanting to be like him. Even when
hes not consciously on your mind, hell begin to influence your actions. Youll find yourself reciting Scriptures or
