Running head: UNIT OF ANALYSES

Unit of Analyses Amelia Farmer Queens University of Charlotte

UNIT OF ANALYSES Unit of Analysis For problem solving on television, a unit of analysis that could be used would be to count how many shows solved a problem. It would make more sense to count the number of shows containing problem solving than to try and count the number of problems that were solved in each individual show. The operational definition for this

unit of analysis could be that problem solving is when there is a clear conflict or problem in the television show, and by the time the episode ends the problem has been resolved. An example would be on Law & Order SVU, if at the beginning of the show there is a rapist on the loose in the city, if by the end of the show he is caught then the problem is solved; if not, the problem still remains. For news emphasis in a daily newspaper and a weekly newspaper, a unit of analysis could be to count the entire news stories in each paper and compare which one has the most or the longest news stories. If a daily newspaper has fewer stories and they are shorter than the weekly newspaper, then the weekly newspaper has more news emphasis. It would not be fair to count the number of stories throughout the entire week, however, so one newspaper could be randomly chosen on a random day of the week throughout a year while each weekly newspaper was chosen throughout a year, and then compare those. For changes in the values expressed by popular songs, a unit of analysis could be to choose certain words or phrases that you believe express good or bad values, randomly select several top songs from ten years ago, five years ago, and today, and then compare if songs from each of those time periods have more or less good or bad values. It would be hard to operationally define what terms constitute good or bad value, but an example

UNIT OF ANALYSES would be that a phrase that is degrading to women would be a bad value, and something positive and uplifting would b a good value.

For the role of women in editorial cartoons, a unit of analysis could be to examine those cartoons which include women. Several editorial cartoons over the course of a year could be randomly chosen, and the operational definition of which ones could be analyzed could be that it has to include a woman. To analyze the articles, they could be compared by looking at different aspects, such as in which cartoons do the women have lines, in which ones they do not, in which ones are they the main characters, etc. For content of blogs on the internet, a unit of analysis could be each individual blog. The operational definition of a blog could be defined as any personal or professional writing that is a story of an event or someones life. It would have to be specific; for example, twitter may or may not be defined as a blog.
