JUSTIFICACIN: This course is important to students approaching the end of their studies because: 1. It provides them with contextualized opportunities for meaningful interaction in the target language. 2. Students need to sharpen the skill of speaking (macro-skill) before graduating. 3. It gives the students an opportunity to focus on English speaking cultures and the ways in which they relate to their realities. 4. Students need to become culturally aware of hot spot issues.

OBJETIVOS: This course has been designed to provide teacher-trainees with opportunities to use the English language orally in contextualized formal / informal situations. Teacher-trainees registered in this course will learn: 1- how to adjust and use formal / informal registers according to contextual conditions, 2- how to respond in culturally appropriate ways to specific situations of oral interactions, 3- how to enrich their students' perceptions & attitudes towards the English language & culture.

CONTENIDOS: Student-led discussions based on the following topics: Culture Definitions. Characteristics. Values. The values Americans live by. How to tell if youre an American / English / etc. Immigration. Immigration, acculturation, cultural pluralism, Anglo-conformity. Assimilation theories. Student-led discussions based on movies / documentaries / texts (negotiated contents).

METODOLOGA (Descripcin de la metodologa de acuerdo a las modalidades de trabajo contenidas en la normatividad de la universidad: 1. Crditos acadmicos: trabajo directo, mediado y autnomo; 2. Competencias a desarrollar ver Artculo 4 Acuerdo No. 009/2006) Workshops will be carried out through face-to-face interactions during which students will be expected to participate actively and make meaningful contributions. Group discussions / presentations-workshops will be negotiated and scheduled at the beginning of the course. Web-based activities and interactions will also be facilitated through Moodle (See access link at the end of this document).

EVALUACIN (Seguimiento evaluativo en relacin con las competencias y modalidades de trabajo contenidas en la normatividad de la universidad) Class-work 50% Meaningful contributions to class discussions (quality of participation in terms of contents and language skill, e.g. pronunciation, fluency, accuracy, etc.) Professional attitude towards topics addressed and classmates. Preparation-presentation workshop. On-line work 50% Meaningful contributions in on-line discussion boards. Quality of papers and assignments submitted on-line. Quality of the files used for presentation workshop (all files must be shared with the class).
