Eurizon Capital increases value of business information thanks to Business Intelligence solution

HP has been working closely with us for a number of years and has helped by showing us how to effectively analyse the information we have to improve our data quality. We now have the best Business Intelligence platform to allow us to do this. Rossella Cobelli, IT manager, Eurizon Capital

Objective:
Required a single data warehouse in order to standardise information across the business. It also wanted to create a platform for Business Intelligence that could perform granular analysis for management control, business planning and marketing.

Approach:
Approached HP to find a Business Intelligence solution, based on Microsoft tools, so that information could be shared on a single data warehouse across the organisation.

IT improvements: HP customer case study:

Business Intelligence solution reduces Total Cost of Ownership by 30 per cent Standardisation across all business areas makes information easier to manage Improved data quality and security of information Following the merger of two companies, Eurizon Capital became the central hub for asset management for the Intesa and Sanpaolo groups. Today, Eurizon Capital, headquartered in Milan, is the leader in its field within the Italian market, totalling around 163.7 billion Euros for both retail and business customers. Previously, Intesa and Sanpaolo each had a different approach to analysing customer information and therefore used two different Business Intelligence (BI) systems. Sanpaolo used a direct channel of access to the market whereas Intesa used external channels (brokers from other companies) and used BI primarily for marketing purposes.

Industry:
Finance

Business benets:
Increased user friendliness for employees Expanded analysis scope within business planning and management control, including the measurement of product and channel margin Created new customer profiling possibilities enabling more targeted marketing campaigns Reduced Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by up to 30 per cent

During software selection, HP presented a range of Business Intelligence products to us that we had never seen before. Thanks to their knowledge of our market, we quickly found what suited our business need. Rossella Cobelli, IT manager, Eurizon Capital

However, when Eurizon Capital formed, they recognised the need to standardise their information platform to ensure efficiency and ultimately retain their competitive edge in the market. For financial services companies, such as Eurizon, success can depend on the analysis and reporting of business data namely through Business Intelligence. This requirement enabled Eurizon Capital to make an informed decision to approach HP with their business need and scope. They immediately decided to focus on a single data warehouse to standardise information across the business, while maintaining a high level of security.
Following the merger we found a severe lack of cohesion of information platforms. After concluding that it was impossible to keep both information systems, we decided together with HP to select the best tools from each of the two architectures, with a focus on optimising costs and obtaining high data quality and standardisation .
Rossella Cobelli, IT manager, Eurizon Capital

Therefore, all data is now channelled through a single data platform using a Microsoft SQL Server, a decision made based on its flexibility, easy integration and low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for Eurizon. In a few months, we have gone from analysing the needs and defining the boundaries to implementing the new data warehouse for planning and management control. The choice to keep using the Microsoft operating system, also endorsed by HP, has proven to be successful given the reliability of the applications and the size of our company. The choice of the HP BI system for marketing was a less obvious choice. We were also advised by HP to use Microsoft QlikView, as it best fits our needs in terms of flexibility, user friendliness and cost. Rossella Cobelli, IT manager, Eurizon Capital HP had already established a partnership with Sanpaolo group in data warehousing and was participating in the project with a team of six consultants. HPs experience was essential for reaching the desired level of data quality and bringing together departments as diverse as marketing, business planning and management control.

Importance of data quality

The most important results that planning and management control have achieved so far have been the scope expansion of the new information systems and raising the level of data quality. We can now regularly update information and have improved data representation. Today, we have access to information that we couldnt reach before, such as information relating to certain committees. The main advantage, however, is that we now consider the data to be an asset to the entire company and not just to a specific department, confirms Sandro Vesprini, head of planning at Eurizon Capital. The new system has allowed us to better understand issues related to profitability, explains Carlo Mazzini, management control manager at Eurizon Capital. Today we are able to evaluate both the profitability of individual products and those from brokers, two essential elements to compete better and be more efficient in the market.

Not only that, but the new data warehouse from HP has increased the timeliness of updating information, says Matteo De Laurentiis, business planning manager at Eurizon Capital, which is essential for summarising regular reporting that can guide senior management in their decisions to free up useful resources for new qualitative analyses. On this second point, the new system enables us to expand the scope of business analysis, enabling, for example, territorial analysis and insights into the evolution of the investment dynamics and profitability by channel, says Eliana Taveggia, business planning, Eurizon Capital.

Change of marketing focus

Taking advantage of the flexibility of Microsoft QlikView has enabled Eurizon Capital to create a BI environment that is targeted to its specific needs. The added value brought by the team at HP helped us develop an analytical environment that is based on the three dimensions of our business: products, brokers and customers, says Marco Avoledo, marketing manager, Eurizon Capital. Eurizon Capital can now fully utilise their customer data within retail and business areas and use this to maintain their advantage in the market. This enables Eurizon to manage supply in a more targeted manner, allowing the profiling and segmenting of customers like never before. Eurizon now have the facility to analyse the effectiveness of individual marketing campaigns, with great advantages in terms of costs.
