Scholarships

Scholarships for commencing undergraduate students


Commerce Opportunity Bursary
Victorian residents who intend to apply for the Bachelor of Commerce may be eligible for a Commerce Opportunity Bursary. Two Bursaries are available to assist high achieving students who are in financial need, or are otherwise disadvantaged. Each Bursary is valued at $15,000 per annum, for the duration of the course. Candidates must apply for the Bachelor of Commerce through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC), and submit a Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) application providing evidence of financial hardship and other disadvantage. No application is necessary. All domestic students who are offered a place in the Bachelor of Commerce are automatically considered. The Copland Program recognises students for their outstanding work during secondary studies, by gaining access to unique opportunities including:

invitations to Faculty sponsored events,

Guaranteed entry into the graduate program of their choice as listed under the Chancellors Scholars Program, subject to course prerequisites. No minimum GPA is required in the undergraduate degree (however students may be required to undertake an interview); individual mentoring by the CEO of one of Australias leading business, government or not-for-profit organisations; international exposure through study abroad or exchange at a leading partner institution, study tour or workplace program; Scholarship bursaries as outlined in the Chancellors Scholars Program; participation in a unique program directed at enhancing understanding of the issues central to creating a just, prosperous and sustainable society in Australia; and transition-to-commerce activities in the first year of study;

such as lectures by leading international academics, roundtable discussions with prominent members of the political and business worlds, and various student leadership events. Copland Scholars will also be appointed as a member of the Facultys student leadership group, meet regularly with senior academic staff, and represent the student body at meetings with the Faculty Consultative Committee and Alumni Council. First in the Family Scholarships


The First in the Family Scholarships are awarded to Bachelor of Commerce students who will be the first in their family to attend university. Each scholarship is worth $10,000. The beneficiaries will also be given priority consideration for residency at Ormond College, where they will be eligible (not guaranteed) for an Ormond College scholarship. Applicants must not have a previous university qualification, and must apply to the Bachelor of Commerce through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC), and submit a Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) form.

Chancellors Scholars Copland Program


Students selected into the Bachelor of Commerce (Chancellors Scholars Program) will automatically receive membership of the Copland Program as one of the benefits. Selection is based on academic merit and is guaranteed for students who have completed secondary schooling in Australia in 2011 with an ATAR or Notional ATAR of 99.9 or above. Students who apply to the Bachelor of Commerce (Chancellors Scholars Program) and who have achieved an ATAR of 99.9 are guaranteed entry into the program, regardless of whether the Bachelor of Commerce is placed as their first preference course.

The benefit of the support that Ive received from these scholarships is that I have less financial pressure and strain resulting from studying away from home. It allows me to put a greater focus on completing my studies and removes all the financial stress which would otherwise concern me. Furthermore, the Commerce Opportunity Bursary is also beneficial as it gives me both a networking opportunity and a mentor which will help me to gain the most out of my degree and my Melbourne experience.

A.G Whitlam International Undergraduate Partner Scholarships


The A.G Whitlam International Undergraduate Scholarships are available through the generosity of the late Arthur Gordon Whitlam, and are funded from the A.G Whitlam Trust. Available to international students commencing the Bachelor of Commerce, they cover 50% fee remission for the duration of the course. To be eligible candidates must have attended one of the following international partner institutions: Trinity Foundation Program, Higher Education Learning Program, Taylors College, Sunway College, Beijing Normal University Zhuhai, Markham College, Singapore Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic or Temasek Polytechnic. No application is necessary. Eligible students offered a place in the Bachelor of Commerce are automatically considered.

Commerce at International House Scholarship


Students who reside in rural or regional Victoria and intend to apply for entry into the Bachelor of Commerce may be eligible for the Commerce at International House Scholarship. Two scholarships are available to assist students in transitioning to living in Melbourne and tertiary study by providing a place at one of the Universitys prestigious colleges. The scholarships will provide residency at International House for the first year of the Bachelor of Commerce, and each are valued at $13,000. Candidates must apply for the Bachelor of Commerce through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC), and submit a Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) application providing evidence of residence in rural or regional Victoria. Preference will be given to students who are also able to demonstrate financial hardship and other disadvantage.

BCom Global Scholarships


These scholarships are available to international students who have completed an approved year 12 program or equivalent that meets the eligibility requirements for the BCom, and:

be made an unconditional offer for the Bachelor of Commerce; be a citizen of a country deemed under-represented by the Academic Board, or an Ausaid student or student sponsored by another equivalent humanitarian organisation; have not previously completed more than 12 months of tertiary level studies (excluding extension studies completed as part of a year 12 program); accept a place in the BCom in the year it is offered.

Undergraduate International Merit Scholarships


These scholarships are available to international students offered a place in the Bachelor of Commerce program. Approximately 10 scholarships are awarded annually, and entail a 50% fee remission for the duration of the course. No separate application is necessary and selection is based on academic merit.

Each scholarship is worth a 10% fee remission for the duration of the course. No separate scholarship application is required. All eligible students who have submitted an application for the BCom will automatically be considered and ranked against other eligible applicants on the basis of academic merit.

The Graduate Merit Scholarship is a great support to enable students to leave their home country and come to Melbourne to study at a high level. you focus on the course and on the uniMelb experience. you work hard doing your best, but also gain the best of this life experience. Scholarships for commencing graduate students


A.G Whitlam Graduate Scholarships
The A.G Whitlam Graduate Scholarships are available to all students, local and international, who apply to a coursework program. Applicants are automatically considered for the A.G Whitlam Graduate Scholarships and they are awarded based on the same criteria as selection for the program. There are a range of scholarships available which cover 50% to 100% of the course tuition fees.

International Postgraduate Coursework Awards


Available each year to commencing Masters coursework applicants, the International Postgraduate Coursework Awards cover 25% fee remission for the duration of the course.

Graduate Access Melbourne


Local students applying to the Master of Management (Accounting) can apply for a Graduate Access place. Graduate Access aims to provide entry to graduate study to applicants whose personal circumstances have had a sustained adverse effect on their academic achievement at the undergraduate level, or who are members of a specified group known to be underrepresented in higher education. Graduate Access ensures that more students continue to enjoy admission to graduate courses, regardless of their cultural or socioeconomic backgrounds.

Graduate Merit Scholarships


Graduate Merit Scholarships are available to all students, local and international, who apply to a coursework program. Applicants are automatically considered for the Graduate Merit Scholarships and they are awarded based on the same criteria as selection for the program. The Graduate Merit Scholarships cover 50% of the course tuition fees.

Students who are successful in their Graduate Access application will automatically be granted a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) and may also be eligible for a Graduate Access Melbourne Bursary. This is a one-off grant of $5,000 designed to support students in meeting the costs associated with graduate study. All applicants eligible for Graduate Access Melbourne will be considered for a Graduate Access Melbourne Bursary. Commerce Alumni Leadership Scholarships


To highlight the value of leadership and to recognise service and contribution to community, BEA@M (Business and Economics Alumni @ Melbourne) is pleased to support the Commerce Alumni Leadership Scholarship. Available to all Bachelor of Commerce and GSBE students, selection is based on demonstrated community involvement and leadership potential. Candidates must have a grade point average of 65 and above to be eligible.

Citigroup Women in Investment Banking Scholarship


To encourage women to pursue a career in investment banking, Citigroup is pleased to sponsor an annual scholarship valued at $8000. Open to female Bachelor of Commerce students (including combined degrees) in the penultimate year of studies, the tenure of the award is one year. Selection is based on academic merit and interview performance.

The Boston Consulting Group Undergraduate Scholarship


Applications are now being accepted for The Boston Consulting Group Undergraduate Scholarship. Valued at $10,000 the award is open to Australian and New Zealand permanent residents and citizens in their penultimate year of undergraduate study. The successful applicants will demonstrate exceptional ability in academic, leadership, creative, teamwork and communication areas.

C.S. Soper and Joan Rydon Scholarship


This scholarship, which supersedes a former award established by the late Emeritus Professor Joan Rydon in memory of her husband and former Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, C.S. (Sam) Soper, is awarded annually on the basis of academic merit to a student undertaking the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Economics, specialising in economic theory or mathematical economics.

Deutsche Bank Penultimate Year Scholarships


Deutsche Bank is pleased to sponsor an annual scholarship to Bachelor of Commerce (and combined degree) penultimate year students. Valued at $6000, the scholarship is open to Bachelor of Commerce students undertaking their penultimate year of study. Selection criteria is on the basis of academic merit, extra-curricular activities, interpersonal and leadership skills and qualities which offer evidence that applicants have a genuine interest in the investment banking industry.

Australian Industrial Relations Commission Centennial Prize


To commemorate 100 years of conciliation and arbitration, members of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission established a trust to fund the AIRC Centennial Prize. Awarded annually, the prize is open for application to research students, both undergraduate and graduate, who have submitted a research essay or thesis in the area of Industrial Relations or Labour History. Selection is based on the quality of the essay or thesis, and the relevance of the research to the AIRC and the community.

Flagstaff Honours Finance Scholarship


This scholarship is available to Australian citizens or permanent residents intending to undertake the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) specialising in Finance. Valued at $10,000, selection is based on academic merit, interview performance and demonstrated interest in investment banking industry as well as interpersonal skills and leadership potential. Flagstaff Partners may also offer the scholarship recipient the opportunity to undertake a internship with the firm over the summer vacation preceding their Honours year.

Prizes and studentships


The Faculty of Business and Economics has a number of prizes and studentships, awarded to the highest achieving students in the Faculty, as well as a range of grants for student endeavours. These are funded through the generosity of government and industry sponsors; individuals; through bequests and donations; and by the Faculty and Departments.

Deans Honours List

Subject Prizes
Subject prizes are awarded to the student who achieves the highest result in a sponsored subject, or group of subjects, and are available at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Winners are automatically selected on the basis of their academic results, following the final release of results each year. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) or a coursework program at the Graduate School of Business and Economics. Honours and graduate students are not eligible to win prizes for first, second or third level subjects. Studentships
KInSMan STudenTShIp and prIze

The Deans Honours List is an annual award made to the highest achieving Bachelor of Commerce students in recognition of their academic excellence. The list comprises the top 3% performing students in the Faculty. Students included on the list will receive a certificate from the Dean of the Faculty at the annual Deans Awards Ceremony. The award will also be noted on the students transcript.
GraduaTe STudenTS

The Graduate Deans Honours List is compiled each semester, recognising the academic excellence of students of the Graduate School of Business and Economics. The list comprises the top 3% of students graduating from each coursework program. Students included on the list will receive a certificate from the Dean of the Faculty at the Graduation Dinner, and the award will be noted on the students transcript.

A studentship of $1500 is available to students completing the Bachelor of Commerce Honours program. This scholarship is to provide encouragement for Honours students to develop their research essay so that it can be published as a paper in a refereed journal. Students must be working jointly with a supervisor or advisor. Selection is based on the quality of the research essay, and the potential for the essay to result in a publishable paper. In addition to the studentship, the four best research papers supported under the Scheme annually will receive a prize known as the Kinsman Honours Research Essay Prize. One prize will be awarded from each of the Departments (Accounting Economics, Finance and Management and Marketing). The value of the prize is $500.
