FEBRUARY 26, 2012 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

REPENT AND BELIEVE IN THE GOSPEL

Lent is the time of year we devote to scrutinizing our lives in the light of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus. Todays readings are a nice shorthand catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. Peters letter gives an explicit explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal we make to God for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear conscience? The words proclaimed by Jesus immediately following his temptation show us the way: Repent, and believe in the gospel (Mark 1:15). It might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life lived by our baptismal promises. - Copyright J. S. The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary selfdenial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME
The Diocese of Joliet is seeking to fill a few positions for seasonal cemetery workers. A seasonal cemetery worker will do general cleanup of cemeteries of leaves, broken branches and other debris and assists with the placement and removal of seasonal grave decorations and maintenance of grass, bushes and trees. (See job description at www.dioceseofjoliet.org under employment) Qualifications: Must be a high school graduate with a valid Illinois Drivers license and be physically able to do lawn maintenance work. This is a seasonal position only with no benefits, with a normal work-week of 40 hours. Qualified and interested applicants send resume to humanresources@dioceseofjoliet.org, Office of Human Resources, St. Charles Pastoral Center, 101 W. Airport Rd., Romeoville, IL 60446.

STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
In todays Gospel, Jesus urges his listeners to do two things: to believe in the Good News and to repent. The steward is called to repent: to acquire an openness to begin anew, to change existing attitudes and habits, and to act with faith in the Gospel. In this season of Lent, now is the time to ask ourselves whether or not we truly believe in the Gospel; and if we do, to what extent are we willing to change our prevailing habits and be more faithful to the Gospel?

MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR CCWS ANNUAL ST. PATRICKS LUNCHEON - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14
Even if youre not Irish, mark March 14 at 11:00 oclock on your calendar for CCWs annual Luncheon to Honor St. Patrick. If you have been to other St. Pats luncheons, you KNOW what a good time it will be. There will be more information coming in later bulletin articles. Fr. Guiney will be sharing a few stories with us. A Community Affairs Project - Council of Catholic Women

Lenten Schedule Personalize It

Perhaps youve seen the parish Lenten schedule in the bulletin or received it in the mail. Hopefully youve reviewed it and decided that youll be able to participate in some ways. Perhaps your schedule allows many opportunities to be present. Perhaps your schedule only permits limited, or very limited, participation. Some are prayer events. Some are social events. Many other events occur throughout the year and are not listed on the schedule: weekday morning Rosary, Morning Prayer and Mass, Monday food pantry, Tuesday rosary, Thursday Exposition of the Eucharist, 3rd Sunday hosting of PADS at Etz Chaim, etc. There are many ways to personalize your Lenten schedule and be in tune with what is offered at the parish, even if you cannot be present physically. Stations of the Cross: These can always be prayed as personal prayer or in your household group. Many booklets are available. The stations, with a brief prayer to get started on each, are in the Missalette on page 113. If you know the 14 Stations, you can reflect on them anywhere as time permits. Join in Christs suffering as he carries this weight for us, falls under it three times, sees his mother along the way, and is eventually hung upon the cross to die for our sins. There is no cookbook best recipe. You could spend 1 minute per station or 1 hour in total, with time varying for each station. Soup lunch: This enables busy people, including people working in the area, to pray together and share a Lenten lunch. The soup and crackers help remind us of the Lenten fast and may encourage us to fast many days during Lent, a way of being more in union with Christs suffering. You can observe this practice on your own frequently during Lent. St. Joseph Table: this annual social event during Lent helps us focus on the poor in our midst. We share, hopefully, a simple meatless meal to show solidarity with those who do not have enough to eat on a regular basis. Although we have an extensive table of foods and desserts, the focus should be on eating less than a full meal and offering at least the cost of a meal out for the chosen charity. This event, along with the food pantry and PADS, remind us to keep living the Corporal Works of Mercy. Additional donations to these groups are a good Lenten almsgiving. The Sacrament of Reconciliation: frequent reception of this Sacrament is encouraged. It is required annually if we are aware of serious sin in our lives. For anyone who ignores this Sacrament for more than a year, I would say examine your conscience in regard to the sin of Pride. Living the Eucharist: Please, if you can, sign up and gather with fellow parishioners. Perhaps join with a friend and meet some great people you have not yet met. If you can not commit to a given time, sign up to get the material to use in your household. Continue to pray in unity with and for the sick, those preparing for or recovering from surgery, the homebound, those hospitalized or in a health care center. This week I begin outpatient therapy. I hope to be back in church soon. Deacon Frank

Christ the King would like to celebrate all of the heritages that we serve, some include but not limited to Spanish, Filipino, Polish, Indian, Latin and German. Each of these heritages will be reflected in the Mass. We are asking participation from all heritages to be present, wear their native dress, and to bring a sampling of their favorite native dish. After the Mass we will have a social gathering in the parish life center to celebrate heritage with hospitality. We ask that when you bring your dish that you make a card label with the name of the dish and the Heritage in which it represents.

Christ the King Parish Presents a Morning of Other Pro-Life Issues Saturday, March 10, 2012 9:00 a.m. until Noon in the Parish Life Center
Enslaved in America: Human Traffickingis the most insidious and horrific crime of this age. Those caught in its web by force, fraud or coercion are put into commercial sex and/or forced labor for one reason - GREED. It generates $32 billion worldwide annually. Trafficking of humans is the second largest criminal industry in the world and is the fastest growing exceeded only by the drug trade. This crime has gone unnoticed in big cities and small towns. But, that is changing! Sister Jean M. Okroi, IBVM is an educator, spiritual director and a presenter on Human Trafficking. Her passion is to raise awareness of this evil in our midst. In the past eight years, she has presented this new slavery to various age groups, hospitals and school staff, along with the local neighborhood and church groups. She will open your eyes to what could be happening in your neighborhood or to what you would rather ignore. Pro-Life Means More Than You Think: Carol Wright will be speaking at Christ the King Parish, in Lombard, in the Parish Life Center. Carol will help explore how our traditional values and teachings of the Catholic Church are under attack. From the new regulations that will require us to pay for free birth control for everyone to the inevitable rationing of health care at the end of life. Human embryos are being destroyed in a futile effort to find cures that are already taking place with ethical adult stem cells. Become informed and involved. Carol Wright: Carol has been active in the pro-life movement for 40 years. She was president of Illinois Citizens for Life for five years, and currently is their Publicity Director. Carol also served on all levels of the Council of Catholic Women. She served twice on the Diocesan Board, and is currently serving on the Western DuPage Kendall Deanery Board (for the past 29 years). At the parish level, she is involved with the Council of Catholic Women, and is the Pro-life Coordinator at St. James the Apostle in Glen Ellyn. PRAYER FOR PROTECTION OF CONSCIENCE RIGHTS IN HEALTH CARE

Father, in Jesus our Lord, we praise and thank you for your most precious gift human life and for forming us in your divine image. Keep us, the dwelling place of your most Holy Spirit, ever healthy in body and soul. Jesus, DIVINE HEALER, pour grace upon all those afflicted with illness or disease. Protect from all Harm those who are vulnerable due to sickness, suffering, frailty, poverty or age, whether elderly or unborn. HOLY SPIRIT, touch the hearts of all who serve human life in medicine and science, so they will protect the dignity of each person, from conception to natural death, and remain faithful advocates of all entrusted to their care. Grant those who are called to serve as health care providers renewed conviction in their ministry, and increased wisdom to treat the whole person, and not merely the illness. Protect the right of health care providers to serve their patients without being forced to violate their moral and religious convictions. Guard them against discrimination, that they be free to follow you faithfully while fulfilling their professional duties. Grant our lawmakers the wisdom and courage to uphold conscience rights for those called to the ministry of healing, and help them resist the pressure to become collaborators in the culture of death. Give us the strength to be bold and joyful witnesses to the truth that every human life is sacred. In goodness, guard our freedom to live out our faith and to follow you in all that we do. Father, we ask this is in Jesus' name, through the Holy Spirit. Amen United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
