1. Iron ore with a moisture content of 6% was fed to a screen at the rate of 200 t/h. The screen had a square opening of 12.5 mm made of uniform stainless steel wire. The size analysis of the feed was: Size, mm Cum. Mass % Passing 38 100 25 96 12.5 84 6.3 39 3 16.6

Assume the bulk density of the ore is 1600 kg/m3 and the screen length equals the width. Determine: (a) (b) (c) The size of the screen, The screening efficiency if the feed rate was increased to 250 t/h, The efficiency of screening when the depth of bed on the screen was increased by 10%. 2. The hot and cold inlet temperatures to a concentric tube heat exchanger are Thi = 2000C, Tci = 1000C, respectively. The outlet temperatures are Tho = 1100C and Tco = 1250C. Is the heat exchanger operating in a parallel flow or in a counter flow configuration? What is the heat exchanger effectiveness? What is the NTU? What is the criterion for selecting the fluid in the annulus? Phase change does not occur in either fluid. The exchanger is used for some other operation where the flow rate of cooling water through the inner tube (Di= 25 mm) is 0.2 kg/s, while the flow rate of oil through the outer annulus (Do= 45 mm) is 0.1 kg/s. The oil and water enter at temperatures of 100 and 300C, respectively. How long must the tube be made if the outlet temperature of the oil is to be 600C?

3. A counterflow, concentric tube heat exchanger is designed to heat water from 20 to 800C using hot oil, which is supplied to the annulus at 160 0C and discharged at 1400C. The thinwalled inner tube has a diameter of Di = 20 mm, and the overall heat transfer coefficient is 500 W/m2. K. The design condition calls for a total heat transfer rate of 3000 W. (a) What is the length of the heat exchanger? Provide mechanical design of the exchanger. (b) After 3 years of operation, performance is degraded by fouling on the water side of the exchanger, and the water outlet temperature is only 650C for the same fluid flow rates and inlet temperatures. What are the corresponding values of the heat transfer rate, the outlet temperature of the oil, the overall heat transfer coefficient, and the water-side fouling factor? 4. Design a sieve plate column to recover 95% of acetone from air containing 5% of acetone by scrubbing with water. Assume isothermal operation. The column operates at 1 atm and 250C. The feed gas enters the tower at 100 kmole/h. If a liquid rate of 2 times the minimum required is used, determine analytically, (a) the number of trays required (b) te overall column efficiency and based on it, the number of real trays required The equilibrium data for acetone-air water system at 250C and 1 atm are given below: Mole fraction of acetone in liquid Mole fraction of acetone in gas 0.00 0.00 0.01 0.02 0.02 0.0382 0.03 0.0552

5. An air stream containing 6% (by volume) ammonia is to be scrubbed with water to recover 95% of the ammonia in a tower packed with 25 mm ceramic Raschig rings and operating at 200C and 1 atm. The feed gas is supplied at the rate of 1000 kg/h. If a liquid to gas ratio that is three times the minimum required is used, compute the height and diameter of the column. The mass transfer coefficient can be computed by the following equations: (kg a) = 0.097 (G`)0.77 (L`)0.2 (kL a) = 0.00495 (L)0.78 where G` and L` are superficial mass velocity

of gas and liquid respectively in kg/m2 s. ft2
