1.5 Interfaces and Test Access
This 4TEL application is used to test lines that reside in an EWSD switch with SULIM line testing capabilities, via appropriately configured Digital Line Units (DLUs) on LTG-B. Figure 1 is an overview of the connection of 4TEL to the EWSD switch.

This tone interface allows 4TEL to: Learn line access data from the switch Request test access to a line Control test bus connection, and Release test access.
The EWSD SULIM control/access ports are hereafter referred to as Switch Access Ports.

2.1 Introduction
This chapter briefly describes the requirements which must be met before attempting to set up and test the 4TEL/switch interfaces. This chapter contains the following sections:
Title 4TEL Equipment Switch Equipment Tools Required Test Data Required
Each Switch Access Port used by the SAM unit must be configured: Connection Type must be Dialup DTMF Port Timeout must be 3 minutes
Each RMU 745 must be configured with the proper MU Matrix Port number and Test Port (DLU) number.
Note: The Switch Test Matrix number is not used in this application.

is free from service affecting faults - the moderate fault condition on a Sample Line is acceptable can be busied out conveniently.
On the Test Port check sheet list the following, for each Test Port: 1. In the first column (MU Matrix Port), list each port of the MAX 2000B matrix which is connected to a DLU. In the second column (Test Port (DLU)), enter the ID Code (number) of the DLU to which the matrix port is connected.
2.
Note: 4TEL software must use the switch DLU ID codes to identify Test Ports. The switch will respond to a Test Access request by providing a test connection between the DLU and the line specified in the request if this is possible. If 4TEL is not using the correct Test Port number, the test result will usually be an open-circuit condition.

4.1 Introduction
This chapter describes how to configure the RMU 745 in an EWSD switch, and how to verify proper RMU 745 operation. This chapter contains the following sections:
Title Personality Module Configuration Power Up Check RMU Sample Line Check
The following procedure should be carried out on each RMU 745 installed in the EWSD host and remote sites to ensure that the RMU is set up for the correct switch interface.
CAUTION: When removing or working on RMU 745 printedcircuit boards, observe the normal precautions for handling devices which are sensitive to static discharge.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Ensure that the RMU 745 is powered off. Remove the RMU 745 front panel. See Figure 4(b). Remove the RMU 745 Control board with PM. See Figure 4(c). Identify the PM and SW1 on the Control p.c.b. - See Figure 5(a). Set the Personality board jumpers correctly. See Figure 5(b) and Table 2. On SW1, set switch keys 1-8 to 00000100. See Figure 5(c). Re-install the Control board and the front panel.

5.1 Introduction
This chapter describes how to test each of the host and remote site Test Ports connected to an RMU 745 matrix port, i.e., verifying access to the EWSD via each connected DLU. Note: It may be necessary for two people (who are in communication via a telephone line) to carry out the following procedure. One person can input the commands to the TSC while the second uses the voltmeter to monitor the appropriate Test Pair at a remote site. This may also be necessary at the Host, unless the Switch Access Ports and RMU 745 are in close proximity.

Baud rate Signal modulation rate. The baud rate is equivalent to digital bits per second if each signal represents one bit. BInary digiT (BIT): An element in binary notation which can take the two values "0" (ON) or "1" (OFF).

C
CU 4TEL switch-based Control Unit which communicates with the switch processor via switch Control Ports to set up test access and communicates with a 4TEL MU to make measurements on the accessed line. The Control Interface or Control Port is the communications port via which an LTS will carry out Learn and Test Access transactions with the switch processor. A Test Access request will specify the required line using the line DN or EN and the Measurement Interface via which the line will be accessed. See Control Interface above.

D
DLU Digital Line Unit: a frame in the EWSD which contains the subscriber line circuits. Directory Number: The "telephone number" which telephone users use to access a particular line (or group of lines) on the PSTN. Where the line is in a hunt group the number will access the first idle line in the group. Test Access to a specific line in the group can only be obtained by using the EN (see below).
DN
E
EN Equipment Number: Identifies a unit of switch equipment on which a single telephone line may be terminated. The EN enables individual lines in a hunt group to be accessed. External Test Equipment Siemens Digital Electronic Switch System (switch).

M
MAX 2000 Measurement Interface (MI) Matrix to connect EWSD test ports to RMU745 Test Bus. The Measurement Interface or Test Port is a switch interface at which the switch will provide test connection to the line to be tested via a Test Matrix. The LTS will have test bus connections to a number of Measurement Interfaces to facilitate Test Access to all lines to be tested by the LTS. The term "MI" is used in certain switch technologies (e.g. System 1240) for the software parameter which identifies a particular Measurement Interface. Modem MOdulator/DEModulator: Device which converts digital information into analogue, voice-frequency form for transmission over a normal telephone line and converts received transmissions back to digital information. Measurement Unit. 4TEL test head installed in switch which accesses and measures the characteristics of local telephone lines under the control of the 4TEL System Controller.

TAL Test Access Location: a 4TEL software identifier which represents one or a group of commoned switch test access mechanisms to which 4TEL is connected. The TAL links; groups of switch lines switch test access mechanisms (one or more) which provide access to them; and 4TEL MU Test Buses which are connected to that mechanism and thus have access to all of the lines in the group.
Glossary
A TAL is unique to the groups of lines which it covers and thus represents exclusive access. In other words, no line "owned" by a TAL may be owned by another TAL. However, a 4TEL MU may be connected with more than one TAL and, conversely, a TAL may be connected with more than one MU. TB TE Test matrix Test Bus Test Equipment Test Access equipment to which a number of line modules are connected. The line modules are the switch equipment providing termination for subscriber's lines. The test matrix can provide a test access connection between any Test Port connected to the matrix and any line termination connected to the matrix. See Measurement Interface.
