Cell Respiration Lab Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was to study the effect of temperature on the rate

of cellular respiration, and to compare the rates of cellular respiration between germinating and non-germinating peas. Cell respiration refers to the process by which chemical energy is converted into ATP, a molecule useable by organisms. All organisms need glucose for energy, but not all have the same rate of cell respiration. Investigators hypothesized that germinating peas would undergo much more cell respiration than the non-germinating peas because they require more energy in order to germinate, but the non-germinating peas would still undergo some cell respiration. They also hypothesized that a decrease in temperature would cause a decrease in the rate of cellular respiration. Experimenters placed 25 of the room temperature peas into a respiration chamber and then used a CO2 Gas Sensor to measure the amount of CO2 present in the system every 4 seconds for a total of 10 minutes. This was then repeated with non-germinating peas, and then again with germinating peas that had been soaked in ice water. The LabQuest then was able to measure the rate of respiration of each of the peas by dividing the change in the amount of CO2 by the amount of time elapsed during the test. For the germinating peas at room temperature, the rate of respiration was 3.4758ppm/s. For the non-germinating peas at room temperature, the rate of respiration was 0.34799ppm/s. For the germinating peas at a cool temperature, the rate of respiration was 1.2189ppm/s. All three types of peas underwent cell respiration. The germinating peas at room temp underwent the most cell respiration and the nongerminating peas at room temp underwent the least. This data supports the experimenters initial hypothesis in that the trends were what had been expected.

Table 1 shows the temperature of the room and the temperature of a beaker of ice water, as taken by one group in Ms. Dannenbergs F block class. This data was used in the investigation of temperatures effect on cellular respiration since these temperatures were the different temperatures of the germinated peas.

Table 2 shows the rate of respiration for peas under three types of conditions. A group in Ms. Dannenbergs F block class measured this data in order to compare how temperature and germination affect the rate of cell respiration in organisms.

Figure 1 depicts lines with the same slopes as the lines representing the rate of respiration for the peas under different conditions. This IS NOT THE ACTUAL DATA as the group from Ms. Dannenbergs F block class did not write down each data point. It is just so that the reader may see how the data differs visually. Germinated peas at room temperature had the highest rate of cell respiration, the germinated peas at cool temperature had the seconds largest rate or respiration, and the non-germinated peas had the smallest rate of respiration.
