Question 1.
1.1.

Byte (binary term) is defined as a group of 8 bits (binary digit). A bit is made up of either 0 or 1 and is the smallest chunk of information a computer can work with, according to Tim Roderick and Geoff Rushbrook(2002). Bytes are used as a measure of the amount of computer storage in both memory and media and that is why the storage capacity of a computer is given in kilobytes, megabytes and gigabytes. One byte is represented by a letter, symbol or number on the keyboard. The standard string length is eight 0s or 1s in a row and this makes one byte.. A peripheral device is any piece of hardware connected or added to a computer system. eg a printer, scanners and modems. A peripheral device can either be an input or output device. Motherboard is the main circuit board of a microcomputer. It is sometimes called main board or system board. Internet telephony allows users to use the internet as a medium of transmission for telephone calls. It basically provides free telephone calls anywhere in the world but the quality of the call is not as good as that of direct telephone connections or connections. Sound components allow computers to playback and record high quality sound. The playback is done through MP3, MIDI etc.

Question 3. E-Commerce is the buying and selling of goods over the internet and exists in three forms namely business to consumer(B2C), business to business(B2B) and consumer to consumer(C2C). B2C, this is direct sale of goods from the business to the consumer over the internet. It comes in three different models as listed below.

Pure-play. Here, companies use the internet only to sell their goods and services. Some companies could be having warehouses where the goods are stored before being delivered to a consumer. Other companies take the order and relay it to a manufacturer or wholesaler who will in turn supply the items via the intermediary.

Bricks and clicks. These are the usual retail outlets that have established their own websites and are carrying out business from there as well. Instead of going to those brick outlets one just clicks on his/her computer and he/she is in the shop.

Flips and clicks. The flipping of pages of catalogues is replaced with electronic ones on a website where customers now just click icons to get the items they want to view and buy if satisfied with the product.

B2B, here businesses sell directly to other businesses though the concept has

not received that much media attention. A buyer can consider many suppliers within a short period of time and with minimum costs as travel and other expenses can be cut off. There is however the issue of unfair business practices like price fixing.
C2C takes place on online auction sites. It makes buying and selling of unique

items easy as items can be seen on the internet.

Question 6.

A new era is here

Information technology is changing rapidly, and now forms an invisible layer that increasingly touches every aspect of our lives. Power grids, traffic control, water supplies, food and energy, along with most of the worlds financial transactions depend on information technology. An emerging IT delivery model- cloud computing- can significantly reduce IT costs & complexities while improving workload optimization and service delivery. Cloud computing is massively scalable, provides user experience, and is characterised by new, internet-driven economics. In the case of data warehousing and business intelligence information, cloud computing is the most logical solution for many organizations because it provides low cost storage and very high computing capacity that will probably only be required on a monthly cycle he said. Further benefits of cloud computing include: Shared resources Shared development costs on business applications New functionality can be up and running in a matter of days Can be likened to a multi-tenant office block where organisation only pays for space and services it uses No maintenance, upgrades or new installations costs Pay as you go model offers flexibility Applications are all customised to individual organisation Reduced time to market for new applications While bandwidth might prove to be a challenge locally, we have one client which has a detailed internet connection to the US to support its cloud computing. This has allowed them to take full advantage of the cost savings made possible by shared IT infrastructure and applications, concluded Quercia. Question 7. Candidates.doc
