Chan Scholarship - $2000 ($1000 per semester) for tuition is available for the academic year of 2012-2013.

The University of Hawaii Department of Information and Computer Sciences invites all entering Freshmen planning to major in computer science to apply for the Fred and Annie Chan Tuition Scholarship. The scholarship program covers two semesters of tuition up to $1000 per semester at the Manoa Campus. The total amount will not exceed $2000. Objective: The major objective of the program is to support incoming students who are interested in pursuing a research career in the field of information and computer science. Roles of Computer Science Faculty and Student Mentors: A computer science faculty will be assigned to each recipient. Graduate student and/or undergraduate student mentors may also be assigned to the recipient. Faculty and computer science student mentors will take the role as facilitators and answer questions the recipient may have. Application Procedures: Applications and required documents must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, February 15, 2012. Any applications received with a postmark later than the given date will be rejected. Only the first two complete applications from each high school will be accepted. The student applicant must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the time of the application. Applicants may be required to visit the University of Hawaii at Manoa for an interview before the selection date or other arrangements can be made at the discretion of the selection committee. o Selection will be based primarily on the two letters of recommendation, the applicants interview and the alignment of the students interest with an available faculty mentor. o Consideration may be given to other items in including the transcript. All applicants will be contacted and notified of their status by March 31, 2012. All recipients that are under the age of 18 are required to have a parent or guardian complete and sign the tuition scholarship application form. Exceptions to the application process can be made at the discretion of the selection committee.

Applications must include: The completed scholarship application form. One official high school transcripts mailed from the high school. Two letters of recommendation preferably from a teacher or mentor. o The recommendation letter should not exceed 800 words, state the relationship between the writer and student, include the students activities in relation to computer science and have contact information of the writer Recommendation writers may be contacted by the selection committee. o Weblinks to the students computer science projects in the letter of recommendation may be viewed by the selection committee at their discretion. Qualification for the Tuition Waiver The tuition scholarship will run through the Fall semester of 2012 and upon a positive evaluation by the faculty mentor and selection committee continue through the Spring semester of 2013. The student must: o Be planning to major in ICS. o Take ICS 111 the first semester and ICS 211 in the second semester. o Obtain a B or better in both ICS 111 and ICS 211. o Maintain an overall GPA of at least 3.0. o Be a full-time student. o Disclosed any outside work to the students faculty mentor and the total hours cannot exceed 20 hours per week. o Should participate in scholarship activities including: Meeting the faculty at a faculty meeting or similar event. Meeting monthly with the faculty mentor. o Authorize the University of Hawaii at Manoa Information and Computer Sciences Department to publicize information about the recipient in relation to the tuition scholarship. Disbursement of the tuition scholarship will be by semester, with the second semester amount contingent upon fulfilling the terms of the tuition scholarship assessed by the faculty mentor and selection committee. Selection preference is given to Hawaii high school students entering UH at Manoa with some financial need. Exceptions to the conditions can be made at the discretion of the selection committee.
