NETBuilder II Intelligent Routers

Scalability, high bandwidth, and port capacity for todays mission-critical networks

NETBuilder II routers provide high performance, network availability, and scalable growth, along with VPN tunneling and security applications to build secure remote access, intranets, and extranets. The platforms offer flexibility with 4-slot, 8-slot, and 8-slot extended chassis that all accept regular and extended format modules

Key Benefits:
High performance. Multiprocessing architecture in the Dual-Processor Engine (DPE) plus module provides added intelligence by offloading the WAN grooming tasks to the coprocessor, and adds control over the WAN links without compromising packet-processing performance. Hardware and software resiliency for high availability. Dual power supplies, hot swap, hot plug and play, and dual PC Card slots provide the flexibility and reliability needed for mission-critical environments, and disaster recovery features provide quick network recovery, reducing costly downtime. Proven scalability. Boundary Routing architecture provides a simple mechanism for network growth. Legacy support. The comprehensive suite of protocols to support IBM customers includes DLSw Version 2, APPN/HPR, SDLC, and BSC. Low cost of ownership. WAN grooming, which includes compression, lowers your WAN service cost, and VPN technology lets you set up a cost-saving public IP-based intranet/extranet infrastructure.

3Coms powerful NETBuilder II routers combine leading-edge technology with a flexible, modular design to satisfy your internetworking needs today and in the future. The routers integrate both WAN (Frame Relay, ISDN, leased lines, and ATM) and LAN (Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, and ATM) technologies, delivering the most effective solution for LAN/WAN bandwidth mismatch. The platforms support virtual private network (VPN) applications for secure remote access and intranet/extranet connectivity. NETBuilder feature-rich software provides the flexibility and intelligence required to meet todays rapidly changing internetworking

requirements. It delivers a full set of protocols, including IP, IPX, AppleTalk, SNA, Vines, and DECnet. In addition, the valueadded functions such as compression, encryption, prioritization, and disaster recovery provide the most efficient options to maximize the utilization of WAN connectivity. With its selection of chassis sizes, hot-swappable interface modules, full-featured software packages, and management facilities, the NETBuilder II router provides unsurpassed WAN value.

The DPE addresses problems a single processor has with adding WAN grooming functionality. This architecture utilizes a dedicated coprocessor to perform the complex WAN grooming functions, freeing the main processor to focus on packet processing, which results in increased performance withdiagramfunctionality. greater twork

Traditional routing platforms Process Packet pass all traffic through a single processor. Features
Cost of Ownership
Range and flexibility of products WAN services Multiple chassis offering with a complete selection of hardware and software components to meet customer demands and requirements. ISDN, Frame Relay, ATM, leased lines, and other line types meet customers WAN connectivity needs while WAN grooming features reduce service costs. Plug-and-play routing simplifies network expansion and eases router administration. Centralized Management application supports Configuration and Change Management, Performance, Security, and Fault Management. Network managers can store configuration files off-line in an ASCII text file, allowing off-line manipulation using a standard ASCII text editor. Allows distribution of software updates and configuration changes from a central location. The NETBuilder II router can support more than 60,000 routes, enabling room for future growth and direct Internet connectivity. Link State protocols, OSPF and NLSP, provide standards-based proven scalability for large internetworks. These protocols consume less WAN bandwidth allowing greater availability for data traffic. Extensive IBM SNA multiprotocol options, such as DLSw Version 2 (RFC 2166), allow users to integrate large networks. The ability to support multiple logical connections across high-speed pipes. Comprehensive LAN and WAN interface modules to support todays common media can be installed in any NETBuilder chassis system.

Extending Network Reach with 3Coms Boundary Routing System Architecture

3Coms Boundary Routing system architecture lets you add remote sites to your network without adding complexity or administrative costs. The system works in small to midsize remote offices having one LAN segment and one active WAN connection to a main site. Boundary Routing architecture delivers complete routing functionality to each remote location, easily and affordably. Installing a router at the remote site becomes a plug-and-play operation. Software updates and configuration changes are handled transparently over the WAN by a NETBuilder II router or any

other central-site capable NETBuilder routing platform at the main site. Centrally located administrators manage the routing complexity for many remote sites. Included in the Boundary Routing solution are the SNA boundary routers. These routers provide the same functionality as the other boundary routers, but have been optimized for SNA traffic. The routing architecture automatically prioritizes SNA traffic over other protocol traffic providing predictable SNA performance. With its cost-saving and time-reducing benefits, Boundary Routing architecture is the ideal choice for leveraging administrative expertise in growing organizations.

Data Compression
3Coms history-based or perpacket link compression reduces the size of both headers and data in packets sent over serial lines, letting the lines carry two to four times as much traffic at no additional charge. With the DPE, the second processor is dedicated to data compression leaving the main processor to do packet processing.

Protect Your Network with Back-Up PC Cards

Central and regional site concentrations are important areas of convergence on your network, so protect your network by purchasing extra blank PC Cards for dual images and full dump capabilities. You may also use the network management station to contain backup configuration files of different routes. You should also keep a few PC Cards with boot images on hand for emergencies.

High-Speed Links
