Blu-ray Disc and DVD

Just as DVD meant a 5 to 10 times increase in storage capacity compared to CD, Blu-ray Disc will increase DVD capacity by 5 to 10 times. This is due, among other reasons, to the usage of a blue instead of a red laser and improved lens specifications, allowing for a much smaller focus laser beam which enables the recording of much smaller and higher density pits on the disc. Due to the fact that the data layer on a Blu-ray Disc is placed much "closer" to the laser lens than in DVD (or even the HD-DVD proposal), there is less distortion resulting in significantly improved tolerances. Hence, more precision and ultra high storage densities are made possible. As a result of Blu-ray Disc being manufactured as a single substrate disc comparable to CD, but unlike DVD (and the HD-DVD proposal), the manufacturing process does not involve the bonding of two substrates, resulting in less production material, a shorter production time and hence lower production costs per disc. Blu-ray Disc has the same physical characteristics as DVD and CD, and like its predecessors it also does not require a cartridge. This makes it possible to create Blu-ray Disc products that are backwards compatible with CD and DVD, allowing for a seamless transition to the new technology. Likewise, the technology is perfectly suitable for integration in small form factor equipment, like notebook computers.

What is Blu-ray Disc ?

Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience. While current optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVDR, DVDRW, and DVD-RAM rely on a red laser to read and write data, the new format uses a blue-violet laser instead, hence the name Blu-ray. Despite the different type of lasers used, Blu-ray products can easily be made backwards compatible with CDs and DVDs through the use of a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical pickup unit. The benefit of using a blue-violet laser (405nm) is that it has a shorter wavelength than a red laser (650nm), which makes it possible to focus the laser spot with even greater precision. This allows data to be packed more tightly and stored in less space, so it's possible to fit more data on the disc even though it's the same size as a CD/DVD. This together with the change of numerical aperture to 0.85 is what enables Blu-ray Discs to hold 25GB/50GB.

What is BD-J
BD-J, or Blu-ray Disc Java, is the interactive platform supporting advanced content for Blu-ray Disc. BD-J allows bonus content on Blu-ray Disc titles to be far more sophisticated than bonus content provided by standard DVD, including network access (such as for downloading updated trailers or accessing live studio events), picture-in-picture and access to local storage. BD-J was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association. All Blu-ray Disc players supporting video content are required to support BD-J. Possible applications include: Creating vastly more dynamic menu systems; downloading additional content such as subtitles from the internet(Profile 2.0 : BD Live); serving current movie previews if the viewer requests them from the network(Profile 2.0 : BD Live); downloading games and other related titles at the request of the viewer(Profile 2.0 : BD Live); being able to buy new titles (online shopping) (Profile 2.0 : BD Live); Dual-Decoder Picture-in-Picture(Profile 1.1);

BD Profile
The BD-ROM specification defines four profiles of Blu-ray players. All video-based profiles are required to have a full implementation of BD-J. 1.0 is the basic profile that all current Blu-ray players (as of April 2007) are based on. Players based on this profile are only required to have 64 KB of application data area storage, which is typically used for bookmarks and other preference storage. Most players have more than the minimum required 64 KB. After October 31, 2007, this profile will be superseded by profile 1.1 as the new minimum profile. 1.1 (mandatory November 2007) is typically referred to as "Profile 1.1" (but is more formally known as "Final Standard Profile") adds a secondary video decoder (typically used for picture in picture), secondary audio (typically used for interactive audio and commentary) and capability of supporting a minimum of 256 MB of local storage (for storing audio/video and title updates). Compliance with this profile will be mandatory for player models introduced to the market after October 31, 2007. Some profile 1.0 players may be upgradeable via firmware update to profile 1.1 if they have the appropriate hardware, but no manufacturer has announced any such upgrade. When software authored with interactive features dependent on Profile 1.1 hardware capabilities are played on profile 1.0 players some features may not be available or may offer limited capability. However, profile 1.0 players will still be able to play the main feature of the disc.

BD Profile
2.0 (BD-Live), also known as BD-Live, adds network connectivity to the list of mandatory functions and increases mandatory local storage capability to 1 GB. No players have been announced as compatible with this profile. However, players of earlier profiles will still be able to play the main feature of the disc.

Blu-ray Disc for Movie Distribution

Blu-ray Disc for Movie Distribution
Most people know about Blu-ray Disc's basic features: It can store 25 GB (single layer) or 50 GB (dual layer) on a single sided disc - about 5 to 10 times the capacity of DVD. As a result, Blu-ray Disc supports the highest quality HD video available in the industry (up to 1920 x 1080 at 40 Mbit/sec) - Large capacity means no compromise on video quality. Furthermore, a Blu-ray Disc has the same familiar size and look as DVD, allowing for compatibility with existing discs. Blu-ray Disc Rewritable (BD-RE) and related video specifications were first defined in 2003. The Blu-ray Disc ROM format for movie distribution is fully based on this specification when it was defined in 2004. As a result, users can play home-recorded discs on all of their Blu-ray Disc equipment; there are no playback compatibility issues as with rewritable DVD formats. The Video Distribution format was widely expanded to offer content producers a full range of additional features unavailable in the home recording format. The BD-ROM format for movie distribution supports three highly advanced video codecs, including MPEG-2, so an author can choose the most suitable one for a particular application. All codecs are industry standards, meaning easy integration with existing authoring tools, and choice from wide range of encoding solutions. All consumer video resolutions are available: - 1920 x 1080 HD (50i, 60i and 24p) - 1280 x 720 HD (50p, 60p and 24p) - 720 x 576/480 SD (50i or 60i)

"HDMV" mode

The Blu-ray Disc movie distribution format was designed to offer all features and the familiar user interface model of DVD-Video. However, content producers have a wide array of new and extended features to be included in a Blu-ray Disc title. For this, two profiles are available: Offers all features of DVD-Video and more. The authoring process in line with DVDVideo creation.

"BD-J" mode

Offers unparalleled flexibility and features, because it is based on Java runtime environment. It allows for extensive interactive applications, and offers Internet connectivity.

Introduction to HDMV mode

BD-ROM provides an easy-to-author framework for creation of High Definition movie experiences known as HDMV (High Definition Movie) mode. HDMV supports a lot of features such as seamless multi-angle and multi story, Language Credits (dynamic selection of a credits sequence depending on the users Language choice), Directors cuts, Trilogy collections etc. Here are some of the key features offered by HDMV: Industry Standard High Definition Video and Surround Sound Audio: MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC and SMPTE VC-1 video formats. LPCM as well as Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Lossless, DTS digital surround and DTS-HD audio formats. Independent High Definition Graphic planes: Two independent High Definition graphic planes and one High Definition video plane simplifies the process of Authoring both Menu and Subtitle graphics. Improved Menu features: Multi-page Menus - Menu presentations can be changed with no interruption to AV playback. Pop-up Menus Menus can be shown or removed from display based on user request. Full color High Definition animated Buttons and animated Menu transition effects. Button-sounds sounds can be presented when Menu Buttons are selected or activated. Improved Subtitle features: High Definition Bitmap Subtitles supporting full color images with frame-accurate animation effects up to full video frame-rate. High Definition Text Subtitles utilizing vector-based fonts, encoded text data and multiple style definitions. Text Subtitles do not affect the bandwidth available for a BD-ROM Titles AV stream. Additional Features: Browsable Slideshow - still images may be presented and changed without interruption to audio playback.

Introduction to BD-J mode

BD-ROM also provides a fully programmable application environment with network connectivity thereby enabling the Content Provider to create highly interactive, updateable BD-ROM titles. This mode is based on the Java platform and is known as BD-J. Content Providers are able to include interactive Java applications on a BD-ROM disc in various ways (one application for the entire disc, one application per Title, etc.). Possible BD-J applications include: A BD-ROM Title that supports downloading trailers for a sequel from a Content Providers website and playback under application control. A BD-ROM disc with a set of games, each game associated with a Title in the discs table of content. The main Menu of the disc allows downloading subsequent games from a Content Providers website under certain conditions, like solving a puzzle for example. A BD-ROM Title is distributed supporting only a small number of languages. Later support for more languages (i.e. subtitle and or audio streams) can be downloaded by the BD-J application on the disc.

Introduction to BD-J mode

Java is a platform independent programming environment deployed in a wide verity of environments: Server based applications can be supported through the Java 2 platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE), while Desktop based applications can be supported through the Java 2 platform Standard Edition (J2SE), and Consumer Electronics based applications (for devices like cell-phones and interactive digital receivers) can be supported through the Java 2 platform Micro Edition (J2ME). Java provides an open and flexible programming environment for BDROM. BD-J provides a Java UI & graphics framework along with support for Local Storage and Internet connectivity features thereby creating a complete and future proof solution. A BD-ROM disc can contain a mix of titles based on HDMV and BD-J. Details of the BD-J platform are given in Section 2.3 along with more detailed examples of BD-J applications.

Blu-ray Disc for Movie Distribution

"HDMV" mode Introduction
HDMV" mode was designed to offer exciting new features, while keeping authoring process as simple as possible. It streamlines the production of both Blu-ray Disc as well as DVDVideo titles, as the production process incorporates many identical phases. It offers improved navigational and menu features, improved graphics and animation, improved subtitling support and new features like browsable slideshows. Unlike DVD-Video, the Blu-ray Disc format allows for data to be read from a different location on the disc, while uninterruptedly decoding and playing back video. This allows the system to call up menus, overlay graphics, pictures, button sounds, etc. at user request without stopping playback. Some examples of possibilities will be explained later. Two individual, full HD resolution (1920x1080) graphics planes are available, on top of the HD video plane. One plane is assigned to video-related, frame accurate graphics (like subtitles), and the other plane is assigned to interactive graphical elements, such as buttons or menus. For both planes, various wipes, fades and scroll effects are available. One example is to present a menu. Menu buttons can have 3 different states: Normal, Active and Selected. They support 256 color full resolution graphics and animation, thereby greatly surpassing the capabilities of DVD-Video. Buttons can be called and removed during video playback, there is no need to return to a "menu screen.

"HDMV" mode Button sounds
Button sounds can be loaded into memory of the Blu-ray Disc player. When a user highlights or selects a menu option, the sound can be played (such as a voice-over explaining the highlighted menu choice, or button clicks). These button sounds can even be mixed with the running audio from the movie or menu. In DVD-Video, playback was interrupted each time a new menu screen is called. Due to Bluray Disc's ability to read data from the disc without interrupting the current audio/video stream, a menu can consist of several pages. Users will be able to browse through the menu pages or select different menu paths, while the audio and video remain to be playing in the background.

Multi-page Menus

User Browsable Slideshows

Subtitles

In DVD-Video, user browsable slide shows were not possible with uninterrupted audio. As a result of Blu-ray Disc's ability to read data from the disc without interrupting the current audio/video stream, users can browse through various still pictures while the audio remains playing. This applies not only to forward and backward selection; a user can make different selections on what picture to view (or selects from a screen presented with thumbnail images) while the audio remains playing. In DVD-Video, subtitles were stored in the audio/video stream, and therefore they had limitations on the number of languages and display styles. Again, it is due to Blu-ray Disc's ability to read data from the disc without interrupting the current audio/ video stream, that subtitles can be stored independently on the disc. A user may select different font styles, sizes and colors for the subtitles, or location on screen, depending on the disc's offerings. Subtitles can be animated, scrolled or faded in and out.

Blu-ray Disc for Movie Distribution

"BD-J" mode Introduction
"BD-J" mode was designed to offer the content provider almost unlimited functionality when creating interactive titles. It is based on Java 2 Micro Edition, so programmers will quickly be familiar with the programming environment for BD-J. Every Blu-ray Disc player will be equipped with a Java interpreter, so that it is capable of running discs authored in BD-J mode. In BD-J mode, the author has complete freedom in designing the user interface. The interface is controllable by user using standard navigational buttons on remote. It can display up to 32bit dynamically generated graphics (millions of colors), and it supports the display of pictures in standard file formats like JPEG, PNG, etc.

Graphical User Interface

Playback control

The BD-J application can act as the sole interface to the disc's contents (thus replacing the players onscreen controls as with discs authored in HDMV mode). The BD-J environment offers all of the playback features of HDMV mode, including the selection of subtitle, trick play modes, angles, etc. Video can even be scaled dynamically, so that it can be played in a small size in the corner of a menu, and resume full screen when a selection is made

Blu-ray Disc for Movie Distribution

"BD-J" mode Storage
A Blu-ray Disc player might contain a small amount of non-volatile system storage (flash memory). This system storage can be used to store game scores, bookmarks, favorites from a disc, training course results, etc. As a manufacturer's option, a Blu-ray Disc player may also be equipped with Local Storage (hard disk, to allow large amounts of data like audio/video to be stored. The BD-J system supports basic Internet protocols like TCP/IP and HTTP. The player may connect to the disc publisher's web site to unlock certain content on the disc (after certain conditions, like payment, are met), or dynamically display certain info (like theater playing schedules for a movie) on the screen. The disc's program may be extended with JPEG pictures or audio fragments downloaded from the Internet, or it can even stream full new audio/visual content to Local Storage.

Internet connection

Conclusion

The Blu-ray Disc format for Movie Distribution offers two flexible profiles for the creation of titles. It was designed to allow for the streamlined development of Blu-ray Disc (HD) and DVD-Video (SD) titles at the same time, if needed. Basic menus and navigation can be identical. However, it also offers many new functions that will benefit both the author (by offering flexible ways of creating disc content), as well as end users (by offering exiting new functionality compared to DVD-Video).

Pop-Up Menus
HDMV Interactive Graphics support a Pop-Up Menu Interface: once playback of video has begun, HDMV graphical interactive content may be activated during the playback of video by pressing a Pop-Up Button on the remote. In this case, video playback can continue while the HDMV Interactive Graphics are on the screen or video playback may be paused this is determined by the Content Provider using navigation commands. Menus that support a Pop-Up Menu Interface are always pre-loaded. As shown in below figure, several pages of HDMV Interactive Graphics data can be pre-loaded before playback starts. This Interactive Graphics data is kept in memory during playback of the AV stream and is not displayed until requested by the user.

Always-On Menu
HDMV Interactive Graphics support an Always-On Menu Interface; Interactive Graphics content that cannot be removed from the screen by user request is called Always-On. This is one of the methods provided by HDMV to present interactivity to the user. For example, a Menu implemented with the Always-On interface may be presented to the user when the disc is inserted into the BD-ROM Player. Menus that support an Always-On Menu Interface may be pre-loaded or multiplexed with video. If the HDMV Interactive Graphics stream is multiplexed with video, PTS/DTS timestamps can frame accurately determine when the Always-On Menu shall appear and disappear.

Graphics planes

As shown in Figure, HDMV defines two independent full HD resolution (1920x1080) graphics planes for graphics which are composited on the video plane. One graphics plane is assigned for subtitling applications (Presentation Graphics or Text Subtitles) and the other plane is assigned to interactive applications (HDMV or BD-J mode interactivity graphics). Each graphics plane has 8-bits per pixel, with each pixel value referring to an index entry in a Palette for translation to YCrCb color and 8-bit (256level) alpha. This color capability offers an enhanced visual experience and allows compelling content to be displayed using the HDMV Interactive Graphics system.

Browsable Slideshow

The HDMV Browsable Slideshow is another application to present still pictures. There are three differences between Browsable Slideshow and Timebased Slideshow. The Browsable Slideshow has characteristics listed below.

Time duration of presenting a still picture may be set to infinite time. A separate audio stream from main TS that contains still pictures may be presented. A browsing unit can contain either one still picture or one video sequence.

User Changeable Subtitle styles

In addition to the basic style control made available in the Text subtitle format, the Content Provider can also define a set of various presentation positions and font sizes for the display region as user selectable styles. In this case, the user can change the presentation style by selecting one style from the set of user selectable styles as shown in the figure above.

Multi-page Menus

The HDMV Interactive Graphics framework provides a scheme for Menu Page definition, thereby allowing a large amount of data to be presented in an organized manner with special commands available for inter-page navigation. When a Button is activated, a corresponding navigation command is executed which causes the display to change to a specified page. This action is performed with no visible interruption to the screen allowing a seamless user experience.

Button sounds
The concept of Button Sounds is available in HDMV. Both the Select and Activate actions may be associated with short duration sounds which are mixed with the underlying audio.

BD+
BD+ is the DRM scheme embedded in every Blu-ray Disc. BD+ is the name given to an experimental Digital Rights Management (DRM) mechanism that will be included on BD-ROM discs. The Blu-ray Disc Association was forced into providing this extra layer of protection following pressure from Fox. The HD DVD group did not agree to provide Fox with such a DRM over AACS. The fears about BD+ surround the possibility of studios like Fox theoretically being given the power to restrict Mandatory Managed Copy (a system that allows users to make digital copies of movies and send them around a home network). BD+ allows for dynamic encryption schemes, meaning that if the protection were to be cracked, manufacturers could simply change the encryption scheme on new discs, so one single crack could not open up all BD-ROM discs. This is, of course a major advantage over the Content Scrambling System (CSS) protection used on DVD discs which was cracked years ago. All old and new DVDs containing CSS can be ripped from the disc to a HDD, or software is available to simply remove CSS on-the-fly.
