What is a wind turbine?

Wind Turbine or usually also known as Wind Energy is basically a machine which can convert kinetic energy from the wind into a mechanical energy. Wind energy is a term used for electricity that is generated by wind power. Such as Wind turbines to make electricity, windmills to make mechanical powers, wind pumps for water pumping or sail to proper ship. A wind turbine works the opposite of a fan. Instead of using electricity to make wind, like a fan, wind turbines use wind to make electricity. The wind turns the blades, which spin a stem, which connects to a generator and makes electricity. There are several reasons why I choose Wind turbine the first reason is it is ecofriendly to our environment, since wind comes from the nature itself it never run out compare to fuel power such as cars and factories if they re run out of fuel the machine going to stop and in order to have it start again we need to buy more fuel. One the other hand, Wind turbine only needs a high place such as hills, mountains so the machine could get more wind because if its build on a higher ground it wouldn t be blocked by other obstacles. So don t build Wind turbines on a city because the winds going to be blocked by the buildings.
What is a kinetic energy? Kinetic energy is an energy motion as the movement of an object or particles. Examples: y y y A person walking A basketball thrown A boy riding his bike

What is a mechanical energy?

Mechanical energy is where potential energy and kinetic energy are present in the components of a mechanical system. Examples: y y y Mobile Phone A flying aircraft A remote control car

What is Wind turbine? How does it work?

As it was said in the previous page that wind energy is produced by rotating the blades attached to the wheels of wind generators. The principle of operation is quite simple. Wheel blades gradually transfer the acquired energy to the generator. The generator in turn produces electricity that can be used and stored. Typically the wind towers, generating the energy, reach a height of about 6-10 meters and they must be located away from tall buildings or mountains or anything else that can prevent the flow of wind. At the top of the tower is a wheel with extended rails or we can call it bars. These rails are flat and bent at the same angle. They are bent at the same angle so that when the wind hits the blades, they rotate in the same direction and do not create resistance. Wheel size determines the power output of electricity. The larger the wheel the more energy it produces. Renewable energy can be an important thing of increasing economic and societal development in various communities, but only if the projects are correctly designed and thoroughly planned with full local input and cooperation. The financial demands are high, and wind turbines need a great deal of space and the right locations, plus the wind turbines can be unsightly to some. Also needed to be taken into consideration various pluses and minuses of wind energy so that they can be assessed for its feasibility in different areas. The only environmental downsides of your renewable energy source are noise (in some cases with extremely large wind turbines), and threat to birds (if wind turbines are not connected with radar to monitor air activity).

Components of Wind turbine and their uses

Anemometer: Measures the wind speed and transmits wind speed data to the controller. Blades: Most turbines have either two or three blades. Wind blowing over the blades causes the blades to "lift" and rotate. Brake: A disc brake, which can be applied mechanically, electrically, or hydraulically to stop the rotor in emergencies. Controller: The controller starts up the machine at wind speeds of about 8 to 16 miles per hour (mph) and shuts off the machine at about 55 mph. If the wind speed is above 55 mph the wind turbines would not operate because it might be damaged. Gear box: Gears connect the low-speed shaft to the high-speed shaft and increase the rotational speeds from about 30 to 60 rotations per minute (rpm) to about 1000 to 1800 rpm, the rotational speed required by most generators to produce electricity. The gear box is a costly (and heavy) part of the wind turbine and engineers are exploring "direct-drive" generators that operate at lower rotational speeds and don't need gear boxes.

Generator: Usually an off-the-shelf induction generator that produces 60-cycle AC electricity. High-speed shaft: Drives the generator. Low-speed shaft: The rotor turns the low-speed shaft at about 30 to 60 rotations per minute. Nacelle: The nacelle sits atop the tower and contains the gear box, low- and high-speed shafts, generator, controller, and brake. Some nacelles are large enough for a helicopter to land on. Pitch: Blades are turned, or pitched, out of the wind to control the rotor speed and keep the rotor from turning in winds that are too high or too low to produce electricity. Rotor: The blades and the hub together are called the rotor. Tower: Towers are made from tubular steel (shown here), concrete, or steel lattice. Because wind speed increases with height, taller towers enable turbines to capture more energy and generate more electricity. Wind direction: This is an "upwind" turbine, so-called because it operates facing into the wind. Other turbines are designed to run "downwind," facing away from the wind. Wind vane: Measures wind direction and communicates with the yaw drive to orient the turbine properly with respect to the wind. Yaw drive: Upwind turbines face into the wind; the yaw drive is used to keep the rotor facing into the wind as the wind direction changes. Downwind turbines don't require a yaw drive, the wind blows the rotor downwind. Yaw motor: Powers the yaw drive.

B ENEFITS , ADVANTAGES , DISADVANTAGES, PRO AND CONS

Advantages of Wind Turbine:

y y y y y y y y y y There are no fossil fuels burnt in the process With no fossil fuels burnt in the process, it means it s environmently friendly! Free source of energy! Less money will be spent! It can also be used for agriculture purposes Compared to solar energy can generate electricity constantly 24 hours a day, though it still depends on the weather. You can make a business out of it, for example to let people rent the wind turbines. Another way of business with wind turbine is by selling your excess electricity to a local energy supplier, which automatically reduces payback times People in small village can also use this machine Although wind turbine could be very tall, the lower area could be used for agriculture purposes such as farming, etc Single households that are located in villages or small town that is out of reach, can use wind turbines as it has many benefits, such as one of them which is to generate electricity. Some people, usually people that are interested into arts are interested to wind turbine because they find it interesting (feature of landscape)

DISADVANTAGES OF WIND TURBINE:

y y y y y y y NEEDS LARGE AREAS WIND TURBINES ARE NOISY, IT MAY DISTRACT AND DISTURB THE THINGS AND PEOPLE SURROUNDING. I T SOUNDED LIKE A JET MACHINE/A CAR TRAVELLING AT 70MPH. IF WIND POWERS ARE USED IN URBAN AREAS SUCH AS POOR LOCATIONS, OVERPOPULATED AREAS
IT WOULDN T BE EFFECTIVE

IN SOME SPECIFIC AREAS, THE WIND STRENGTH IS TOO LOW. THE CONSTRUCTION OF WIND TURBINE WILL COST A LOT OF MONEY, OR IN ANOTHER WORD EXPENSIVE. WHEN THE TURBINES ARE BEING MANUFACTURED , IT CAN CAUSE POLLUTIONS, SO WIND TURBINES DOES PRODUCE A LITTLE BIT OF POLLUTION IF A WIND TURBINE VIBRATES OR TURBULANCE, IT MAY DAMAGE THE THINGS AND PROPERTIES IN THE SURROUNDINGS ESPECIALLY IF THE WIND TURBINE IS INSTALLED INCORRECTLY .

Possible solutions
Hydroelectric power is suitable for Indonesia to use in the next 25 years the reason is because Indonesia is located in the equator which means that there would be lots of winds and we only have 2 seasons. Despite all of the disadvantages of the Wind Turbine, there are some things that could be done to fix mistakes that have been made by other people in the past. The first case is moving people by force, we don t need to force them we just need to build a suitable shelter that includes the same or even better facilities for them that you think will convince them or maybe share a little part of profit for the following areas that is affected.

The second case that needs solution is broken fans and machine of the Wind turbine. Things in this world sometimes contain mysteries or myths, as well as wind turbines. Machine and fan failure is usually caused a low standard material and construction that leads to problems. Since technology have transform into something more modern and reliable, these days metals and concrete are made more stronger than before which decreases the chances of fans and machine to be broken. But these broken things still could happened if there were really strong wind hit the Wind turbine

The third one is to take good care of the Wind turbine to reduce chances of broken fans or machines. Every time there s a strong wind we need to keep our eyes on the Wind turbine because it got chances to be broken or damaged.

Is it suitable for Indonesia in the next 25 years? Every power plants have it s own disadvantages and advantages for example nuclear is a reliable source of power because most nuclear reactors have a life cycle of 40 years which can be easily extended further for 20 more years, but then it produces high radiation waste that is very dangerous and may spread and cause cancer. However Indonesia should be using Wind energy (wind turbine) because it is eco friendly and it doesn t produce poisonous waste that may cause death. Even though the cost of making a wind turbine is expensive, some how we will get the profit back and to pay debt for the country and add improvement to the country. Since Indonesia have a huge population, there will be more people that use electricity which means it takes less time to have a turnover which means the faster it takes to earn profit.

As you can see from the diagram above, the most energy source that is used is from coal and oil. Fossil fuel are not renewable resources the reason is because it took million years for them to form from dead plants. Wind power is included in the blue part (natural gas) which means it is the 3rd of the electricity generation and it is not dangerous to our environment because basically we use something from the nature and make it as our own profit.

Conclusion In a conclusion, I think Wind turbine should be used in Indonesia in the next 25 years the reason is because by using this power plants it helps use to prevent from making damaging the ozone layer because the daily traffic here, in Indonesia is already affecting the clean air and made it more into toxic or we can call it pollution. Other than global warming, since there are lots of people here that can t afford a luxirious living like some people do they will need help to pay their electricity bills and this is a great solution because Wind turbine uses wind so it would be cheaper. It is also a big plan for Indonesia because if the profit are made from Wind turbine it will add more tourist attraction and to pay our country s debt so it gave use more bigger chance to be one of the developed country. Even though we need big amount of allowance to build Wind Turbine but in the future we re going to make more profit because in order for we to get electricity we only need wind.
