The site lor the new crematorium at the Woodland Cemetery
is well chosen. lt is close to Asplund's Skogskyrkogrden
crematorium, where most ceremonial activities will continue to
be conducted. lt is also within the largest expanse ol unspoilt
lorest in the whole ol the cemetery, a dense woodland ol
ancient pines and mixed conilers that has an intimate spatial
character, and a stillness that comes lrom the solt and insulating
undergrowth ol mosses and berries. Our project engages with
these qualities ol the site to make a building with a quiet dignity
that stands in the middle ol the sylvan lorest and is slightly apart
lrom the networks and gardens that give structure to the more
public rituals ol the Cemetery. The new building lollows the axis
ol the lorest. lts plan is long and narrow so that as lew trees as
possible are removed, and so that the break in the canopy ol
the lorest is no larger than is necessary. lts orientation rhymes
with the position ol the Asplund crematorium and ensures that
a deep swathe ol lorest separates the new building lrom the
surrounding roads. The lowslung volume ol the building emerges
lrom its site like a rocky outcrop. Towards the east, where the
ground is rising we have located a lorecourt that accommodates
all ol the service activities ol the new crematorium. This court
is pressed into the site and incorporates a new standing ol
trees at its centre. The lorecourt is reached by a new vehicular
service road that extends the existing path that runs south lrom
stanvindsvgen. lt is important that the service court is at the
east end ol the site, deep within the lorest so that the movement
ol vehicles and services are pushed into the distance and the
new building can have a close connection with the ground and
the trees ol the lorest. This is consistent with the relationship
between architecture and landscape established by Asplund
and Lewerentz elsewhere on the site.
To the west, we propose a pedestrian path that leads to the
mourner's room ol the new crematorium; this is the more
intimate lace ol the crematorium. The perimeter ol the lormer
car park is soltened through the planting ol new pine trees and
to the south; a gentle mound is lormed with material lrom the
excavation lor the new building. This place will be reconstituted
as a clearing, a completion ol the landscape ol the long lorest.
With a solt lloor and an abundance ol blueberries, strawberries
and wood anemones, this planting will change throughout the
year and quietly proclaims the persistence ol lile.
A New Crematorium
The new Woodland Crematorium should be a utility building
with a religious presence. This suggests a structure that
avoids any sense ol empty aesthetic rhetoric, any excess ol
dimension, and any undue ellort in its construction. We have
proposed an ellicient linear plan that is a clear expression ol
the cremation process. lt takes advantage ol the proportion
and the topography ol the lorest site and uses the necessity to
build as an opportunity to repair and consolidate the qualities
ol the existing landscape. The low gabled prolile ol the east
laade addresses a lorecourt, a paved space that is set 2.2
metres below the surrounding ground level. The east laade
accommodates reception lacilities to receive bodies lrom the
Woodland, and other cemeteries, to receive and to register
urn collection. The east end ol the building has a degree ol
lormality, but one that is tempered by the enveloping qualities
ol the surrounding landscape that overhangs and surrounds
the court and will lend a calmness to this otherwise active
space. The centre ol the lorecourt is planted with three sugar
maple trees that will take advantage ol the enhanced light ol
the clearing. These deciduous trees will mark the passing and
rebirth ol the seasons, the red colour ol their leaves will provide
a moment ol warmth within the strict rhythm and green-brown
palette ol the surrounding Nordic lorest. Stall accommodation
is at this end ol the building and has windows looking east, and
south into a smaller courtyard made specilically lor the stall.
Thecremationprocessislaidout east towest, andthecoldstores,
urn handling and lurnaces are all accessible lrom a single linear
hall. This hall is lit by a series ol high clerestories that brings light
and the shadows ol moving trees into the interior. The space is
given a gentle centre by widening, and then narrowing belore
reaching the last ol the lurnaces. At the west end ol the building,
is the linal lurnace with its associated mourner's room. The lloor
ol the mourner's room is raised hall a metre lrom the lloor ol
the crematorium, to make a comlortable distance between the
mourner and the machinery ol the cremation. A single window
provides a visual connection between the two spaces. The last
lurnace is in the only roomthat is not lit lromabove. A decorative
west window made ol white cast glass, allows a solt light to lall
onto the last lurnace, and the primordial, cave like shapes ol
the mourner's room and associated lacilities lorm a gentle and
dignilied public lace lor the new building.
Pepetition and Figure
The vertical structure ol the building is made with in situ
concrete walls which extend downwards to lorm a basement
at the western end ol the plan, support a concrete ground
lloor slab, and retain the rising topography ol the site. Onto
these cast walls are placed a pattern ol precast concrete
beams set at angles to provide the lraming lor the oval rool
windows. Onto this primary structure ol concrete is placed
a secondary structure ol timber, which in turn supports
the copper cladding ol the external walls and rool. This
direct lorm ol construction and reduced set ol materials is
appropriate lor a utility building. This system is repeated to
enclose the spaces required lor the new crematorium and to
provide an economical enclosure. lt is sulliciently llexible to
accommodate the variations in structural spans and internal
room linings required by the programme. The position ol the
large rool windows that provide even natural lighting to all
ol the internal spaces are shilted and disrupted by these
programmatic exigencies, giving this repetitive element a
ligural quality, reminiscent ol ancestral busts, columbarium, or
the via delle Tombe in Pompeii. These variations have the ellect
ol dillerentiating the systems ol the building, ol introducing
rhythms and distortions that begin to raise the image ol the
building lrom the utilitarian to the poetic. This combination ol
the pragmatic with the poetic is something that characterises
the work ol Asplund and Lewerentz and is especially present
in their work at the Woodland Cemetery. Pobust structures
that minutely attend to lunctional requirements ol the cemetery
at the same time as providing a range ol atmospheres that
support the mourners and the workers in meaninglul ways.
With our project we aspire to make meaninglul connections
to the other structures ol the Woodland Cemetery and to the
rich tradition ol lunereal architecture.
Building in the Forest
Platsen lor det nya krematoriet r vl vald. Den ligger nra
Asplunds krematorium, dr strre delen av den ceremoniella
verksamheten kommer att ske ven i lortsttningen. Det
nya krematoriet ligger i Skogskyrkogrdens strsta orrda
skogsparti, en tt och gammal barrskog som skapar en intim
rumslighet. Mjuka mossor och ris dmpar ljuden och lrstrker
platsens stillhet. vrt lrslag tar vara p dessa kvaliteter. Det
r en byggnad med vrdighet och stillhet, som str mitt i
naturskogen, en bit bort lrn de ntverk av vgar och trdgrdar
som ger struktur till de mer ollentliga delarna av kyrkogrden.
Den nya byggnaden lljer skogens axel. Planlormen r lng och
smal lr att minimera avverkning av trd och avbrott i skogstaket.
Byggnadens orientering speglar Asplunds krematorium och ser
till att ett djupt skogsparti skiljer den nya byggnaden lrn de
kringliggande vgarna. Den lga byggnadskroppen r placerad
i skogen likt en stenhll som bryter genom mossor och ris.
l ster dr marken hjer sig har vi placerat en grdsplan lr
leveranser och praktiska sysslor. Grdsplanen r nedsnkt
under marknivn och i mitten linns trd planterade. Den
nuvarande stigen, som leder sderut lrn stanvindsvgen,
blir den vg som leder till den nedsnkta innergrden. Det r
viktigt att innergrden ligger ster om byggnaden, djupt inne i
skogen, s att lordonen och den praktiska hanteringen hamnar
i bakgrunden och byggnaden tillts samverka med marken och
trden. Frhllandet mellan arkitektur och landskap r i enlighet
med de principer som Asplund och Lewerentz etablerade lr
Skogskyrkogrden.
Till vster lreslr vi en stig somleder till ett rumlr de anhriga.
Det r det mest intima rummet i det nya krematoriet. tmed
kanten av den lre detta parkeringen planteras nya tallar och
vergngen grs p s vis mindre skarp. En mjuk kulle lormas
av de schaktmassor som byggnationen krver. Denna plats
blir sedan en glnta som kompletterar det lnga skogspartiet.
Marken tcks av blbrsris, skogsstjrnor och kanske smultron.
Planteringen vxlar med rstiderna och visar livets stilla gng.
Ett nytt krematorium
Den nya byggnaden skall vara en bruksbyggnad med sakralt
uttryck. Detta leder tanken till en byggnad som undviker tom
estetisk retorik, orimlig storlek och ondigt komplicerad
konstruktion. vi har lreslagit en ytellektiv linjr planlorm som
p ett klart stt tydliggr kremeringsprocessen. Byggnaden
tar till vara platsens proportioner och skogens topograli.
Nybyggnationen kan ven anvndas till att reparera och belsta
skogens existerande kvaliteter. Framlr den lga gavellrsedda
stlasaden ligger en grdsplan. Den stenbelagda ytan
ligger 2,2 meter lgre n den omgivande marken. Den stra
lasaden innehller en expedition lr att ta emot kistor lrn
Skogskyrkogrden och andra kyrkogrdar, samt lr registrering
och utlmning av urnor. Den stra delen av byggnaden r i viss
mn lormell, men kvaliteerna i det kringliggande landskapet, som
hnger ver och omsluter grden, ger den annars aktiva platsen
en knsla av stillhet. Mitt p grden planteras tre sockerlnnar,
som tar vara p det extra ljus som nr ner i glntan. Lvtrden
markerar rstiderna, och de rda lvens varma ton kontrasterar
mot den omgivande skogens brungrna palett. Personalrummen
ligger i den hr delen av byggnaden och har lnster som vetter
mot ster och mot en mindre sderliggande grd.
Kremeringsprocessen har lagts ut i st-vstlig riktning.
Kylrummen, urnhanteringen och ugnarna r alla tillgngliga lrn
en och samma hall. Pummet r belyst av en rad hgt placerade
lnster, som lter trdens skuggor rra sig ven i byggnadens
interir. Pummet har lrsetts med en mitt genom att lrst
vidgas och sedan smalna av mot den sista ugnen. l den vstliga
delen av byggnaden ligger den sista ugnen tillsammans med
anhrigrummet. Anhrigrummets golv ligger en halv meter
ovanlr krematoriets golv, lr att p s vis skapa ett avstnd
mellan de anhriga och krematoriets maskineri. Ett lnster
kopplar samman de tv rummen. Den sista ugnen r den
enda som inte r belyst lrn ovan. Ett dekorativt lnster i vitt
rglas belyser ugnen med ett mjukt vitt ljus. Anhrigrummets
lorm, som pminner om den grotta vi ursprungligen bebodde,
skapar ett varsamt och vrdigt ollentligt rum i den nya
krematoriebyggnaden.
Pepetition och gestaltning
Den nya byggnadens vertikala stomme r brande vggar
av platsgjuten betong. Den strcker sig nert och lormar en
kllare i krematoriets vstra del, samt en stdmur dr marken
hjs mot den stra delen. P dessa betongvggar placeras
lrtillverkade betongbalkar lagda i vinkel lr att ge std t de
ovala taklnstren. P denna primrstomme av betong placeras
en sekundrstomme i tr, som i sin tur br upp kopparplten
som klr yttervggar och tak. Detta r ett ekonomiskt stt att
bygga. Den enkla konstruktionen, med dess l material, r
passande lr en bruksbyggnad. Systemet r anpassningsbart
nog lr de variationer i interirens ytskikt och stommens spann
som de olika lunktionerna krver. De stora taklnstren ger alla
rum ett jmnt dagsljus. Pepetitionen av taklnster bryts av och
lrskjuts av krematorieverksamhetens lunktionella krav. Detta
ger den annars repetitiva gestaltningen en ligurativ kvalitet,
som pminner om lrlders portrttbyster, kolumbarium
eller via delle Tombe i Pompeji. variationen i byggnadens
system introducerar rytmer och lrvrngningar, som lrhjer
byggnadens lramtoning lrn det nyttobetonade mot det
poetiska. Kombinationen av praktiskt och poetiskt karaktriserar
bde Asplunds och Lewerentz verk och r speciellt nrvarande
i Skogskyrkogrdens byggnader och landskap. De robusta
byggnaderna tar noga hand om kyrkogrdens lunktionella
behov. Byggnaderna skapar ven ett brett spektrum av
stmningar, som ger ett meningslullt std till bde personal
och anhriga. vrt lrslag strvar elter att skapa meningslulla
samband med de andra byggnaderna p Skogskyrkogrden
och med begravningsarkitekturens rika tradition.
