Sports have played a major role in popularizing miniskirts. For many years, the wearing of white dresses or skirts by female players was a requirement for competitions such as tennis, table tennis and badminton. In the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, in figure skating, the Norwegian Sonja Henie wore for the first time a short skirt.
